Rate this book
Much to her dismay, the divorce for which Chae-Kyung pined so desperately in the early days of her marriage to Crown Prince Shin is now imminent, thanks to a case of palace blackmail. But with Shin's right to the throne hanging in the balance, the crown princess has no choice but to keep the situation a secret from him and steel herself against the husband she now loves. And no one is more confused by the sudden cold wind blowing through their marriage than Shin himself! Conflicted between antagonizing Chae-Kyung about her apparent change of heart and getting to the bottom of the divorce proceedings, Shin continues to push Chae-Kyung further away. But as the news of the divorce leaks to the media, will it already be too late for Shin to realize the error of his ways?

I absolutely loved this book. It was an amazing sequel. This volume was so heartbreaking. Yul is so awful in the manhwa. He was a nicer person in the K-drama. I hope to continue on with this series sometime soon.

This volume was so ridiculously sad and exhausting. I just wanted Chae Kyung, or anyone really, to tell Shin why they needed to get divorced. If only he knew, then he could have helped solve the problem. But no, they were "saving him" from being hurt, so they tried to convince Shin that Chae Kyung just didn't want to be married to him anymore, wanted to leave the palace, like she had when they first got married. Part of him believed it, because he could see how sad and sick and thin she had gotten over this past year, but Shin also also knew that Chae Kyung loved him, that he loved her, and so deep down, he knew she would rather stay by his side. I really didn't think they'd go through with it, but they did. Like all the staff at the palace, I couldn't help thinking, as they spent their last days together, "why are they getting divorced again?"

Shin promised that he would figure out what was going on, that he would come for her, and win her again. Especially when Yul told him that he would be trying to win Chae Kyung's heart in the meantime. But I'm worried that, in his coming stupidity and hurt feelings, he might give up on her, think she never really loved him.

I still don't get what Yul is thinking. You'd think when Chae Kyung is crying in front of him, saying, "I know you'd never do this to me, put me through this misery," he'd start to regret his actions, and take back his ultimatum. You'd think he's realize how unhappy this has made her, and given up his crazy dream to have her. But no. It was strange, after everything he's been doing because of his love, how Yul reacted to Mi Roo kissing him. By the way, I feel like she's earned the right to be referred to by name, instead of just "Yul's crazy fiancee." I'm hoping Yul's thinking about that kiss means that eventually he will shift his affections, though I have to admit, that idea kind of makes me mad. What is the point of putting Chae Kyung and Shin through so much misery if Yul's not going to pursue her to the end?

The other interesting thing of note was how pained the rest of the royal family was by Chae Kyung's departure. You could tell that the Queen regretted having to force this divorce upon them, that Chae Kyung's tears and pleading cries really effected her, even if she could do nothing about it. (Which I don't think is necessarily true, btw). Even Yul's mom, the Daebi Mama, seemed to have a little regret about it all, even going so far to picture how their lives could have been happy if Yul and Chae Kyung had gotten married, as was originally planned. I hope they miss her with even more regret as time goes on. And I look forward to see what punishments the Queen inflicts on the Daebi Mama and Yul in revenge for all they have done to make the family miserable.

But yeah. Sad face. :(

Bumping this series up to five stars for this volume at least: it made me cry.

Chae-Kyung is put into an impossible position, and forced to divorce the man she loves because of blackmail on the royal family. Worse, she must keep her reasons for pursuing divorce a secret from Shin. The emotions that cross his face in these chapters are a far cry from the arrogant prince of early chapters. Chae-Kyung's hands are tied, pressure from Shin's parents makes them so, and yet I was still surprised that she managed to keep her composure - was cruel, even - during his confrontation regarding her decision.

But, hardest yet was the final panel of this volume. It was at this point in the story that Yen Press, for reasons I don't know, put the series on hiatus for two years. I am *so* glad that I discovered this story after Yen Press decided to resume publication (volume 13 was just released this past September). Instead of waiting two years for the next volume, I am only waiting days for my volume 13 to arrive in my mailbox.

For the past couple of weeks, Goong has enthralled me with the palace life of Korean royalty, a slow burn romance, gorgeous artwork, fantastic drama. I have loved every minute. Now that I'm caught up with the release schedule, this series will be one of my most anticipated releases every few months. I highly recommend this series, and while I went ahead and bought the tangible copies through used-book sellers when I couldn't find them new (because I am a collector), all the volumes released to date are available on the Kindle. Go read it! Now!
