First of all: Morgan appreciation! I’m not sure why, but I LOVE seeing Morgans in books. I also love how this book shows what working with young horses is like. How it’s frustrating and sometimes even scary, but at the same time it makes you laugh and smile. I love the art in this book as well. It’s realistic, but not in a way that seems boring or emotionless. The illustrations have so much life. I will say, a few little things seemed a bit far fetched. I doubt a foal would ever actually leave their mother’s side in the middle of the night like that. The glowing star seemed a bit out there as well. Still, it was an interesting story that kids are sure to love!

This whole Breyer Stablemates series is one Jules really enjoys. Nothing overly spectacular, but sweet stories with some good lessons to learn. And about horses which most little girls enjoy 🙂
Personal response This was one of my favorite books when I was growing up. I enjoyed reading it with my sister, Luci. Luci’s favorite part of the book was when Starlight was found in the hills. I enjoyed reading the book to my sister.
Plot The book started with Haley’s parents giving her a surprise. The surprise was Midnight's foal would be her horse. She was very excited. While Haley’s dad took care of Midnight, she took care of Starlight. Starlight did not listen in the beginning. On a stormy night, Starlight got out and ran into the hills. Haley was worried. She and her dad had set out and found her. The horse finally came to Haley when she said her name. They brought the horse back to the stable.
Characterization Haley Haley was a young girl, who finally got her own horse. She struggled getting her horse to listen to her in the beginning of the book. By the end the horse had came to her when she said the horses name. She had never given up on her horse and always cared for her.
Starlight Starlight is a foal who did not trust Haley. She did not want to listened to her. Over time, the foal gained Haley’s trist and listened to her.
Setting This book took place at a small family stable, in modern time. Even though it never stated a town or city, it was obvious it was in modern time. Haley took care of her horse here. The book took place over the course of a few days in modern time. The things the family dealt with could happen today.
Theme The theme of this book is never give up. Haley struggled getting her horse to listen, but she never stopped working with her and by the end of the book the horse had listened much better. It was important for Haley to never give up.
Recommendation I would recommend this book to boys and girls ages five to ten. Anyone who likes horses, will like this book. The words in the book will challenge them from time to time, but it will be a good book for them to learn new words. Boys and girls should give this book a try.
I collected Breyer model horses when I was young. Finding they published books now to go with their models was a nice surprise.
My love of reading started when i was young, and it gives me immense pleasure to provide books to Spread the Word Nevada, an organization that passes them on to children in the community. They are a terrific organization supporting an important cause. If your local I encourage you to check them out. For those living further a field, look in your own community, their may already be a similar program in place. And if not, you can always help start one.
Myself, I go out on the weekends and shop thrift store and bulk book lots to rescue books and donate them. Sometimes I'll find a book I remember reading when I was young and will read it again before passing it on.
I don't rate these books using my normal scale, instead I give most of them three stars. This isn't a Criticism of the book, simply my way of rating them as good for children.
This book is good for grades 3-4. this book is good for grades staring chapter books and it's a great book if children like reading stories about horse. The genre is contemporary realistic.
