Two Ends Of Sleep: A Novel

Rate this book
Rusty fights with her girlfriend, has wildly inventive sexual fantasies, lives with Multiple Sclerosis and sleeps a lot. Two Ends of Sleep is an idiosyncratic and often hilarious snapshot of urban lesbian life seen through Rusty's cynical eyes, where fantasy and reality blur.

It's rare to find a good book that focuses on a character with a disease. It's not an educational story about Multiple Sclerosis; neither is it a sob story or the typical illness-equals-death story. Two Ends of Sleep is the first book I've read where the person with a disease wasn't killed off at the end. Most books (and movies) tie up storylines with the death of the elderly, the disabled, or any other troublesome characters with incurable differences.
Beyond basic appreciation for the existence of this book, I found most of the book to be laugh-out-loud funny. Rusty's not the sort of idealized character I want to emulate, but she is one of the most lively, realistically portrayed characters I've identified with in a long time.

Other than the hot sex dreams, it's a pretty blah read.....but there are quite a few sex dreams....

Such a slim, quick, whimsical read! The subject matter is serious but the tone is, well, I can't use any other word than humorous and light-hearted. I adore Rusty as a character. She's so heartwarming and adorable, but smart as well. The descriptions of Vancouver lesbian life on the Drive is so on-point and satirical I smiled all the way through this book. I picked my copy up for $2 at Spartacus (a used radical non-profit book store) and it's one of the best toonies I've ever spent.

this book was interesting to me because the main character had MS, which my stepdad had. I wanted to hear more about this woman, this lesbian, this activist that also had MS. The story was told centering around her sleeping and the purpose that served for her, partly like in a way for her to live and do things that were hampered by her MS, but it was difficult to tell what was dream and what was reality, which I am sure was partly the point, but disorienting for me. Very quick read, I think it was like 150 pages.
