Soccer: A Spectator's Guide
This book is for all those who find themselves at soccer games and not fully understanding what's going on. It clearly explains the "beautiful game" so that none of the excitement is missed. It spells out what each player at each position is supposed to do, describes the skills and talents needed to perform well, and lays out the basic offensive and defensive strategies teams employ to secure a win. Books currently available on soccer focus on how to play or how to coach the game. This is the only book written for those watching a game.
About the authors:

Soccer: A Spectator's Guide by Ron Rhody receives four stars from me due to the easy language and that he accomplishes what he sets out to do.
This is a short guide for anyone who is facing the challenge of watching soccer games. When I was a kid and played little league, we would sometimes watching "Soccer Made in Germany". My family would let me watch so I could see how soccer was played but we didn't really know what we were watching.
I decided to read this book because I thought it would help me as I'm watching Soccer with friends. I believe it has helped my understanding of what is going on on the field.
Recommended: if you are interested in soccer but don't know a think about it, yes.

Solid read all around. Short and sweet. Just what I was looking for.
Written in 2010, I think...but isn't dated at all where it matters.
Would recommend for anyone who is a beginner to soccer.

Wonderfully written guide for any new Soccer fan. straightforward and concise. Gets you understanding the game right away. Covers everything from the rules to strategy & everything in between. My wife is reading it now so she can learn. I would recommend it to anyone. The last thing I will mention is there is a lot of care and love in this book and it shines through. Read it.

Great for those who know nothing about soccer
The book was well written and very straight forward. All positions were described accurately. The "what to look for" section at the end of each chapter challenges me to improve my soccer knowledge.
