I was wavering between a 4 and 5 star with this one, but The God Project's chilling Epilogue put it over the top for me. Unsung horror author John Saul may be at his best when he combines his supernatural horror with a bit of dark science fiction, and The God Project does just that. If you want fancy prose or realism, read another author. Saul is fantasy, pure and simple, although this novel, published in 1982, is also prophetic too. We are all being tracked today, and there's no escaping that fact now. Throw in a nefarious government-funded medical agency, scientific experiments on kidnapped children, and covert military spending to fund a project to genetically engineer from birth the perfect human, and you've got a horror novel that is truly scary and not as far-fetched as you would think. As always, Saul keeps the story tight and breathless. He also doesn't hold back on taboo subjects that other authors simply won't touch. Saul goes there, and horror fans like me appreciate his boundary crossing story ideas. I've now read his first eight novels, as well as two others later in his career, and I'll continue until I read his entire catalogue. Saul is the best!
