Sheriff Milt Kovak, having joined his psychiatrist wife on a trip to a conference in Las Vegas, expects a welcome vacation, inspecting the casinos. He has left a capable second-in-command to watch over his small town in Oklahoma, but almost as soon as they arrive, Milt gets an S.O.S. call from his cousin Maida. Her pregnant daughter has been beaten by her husband, and Maida's husband, Burl, has thoroughly trounced his son-in-law. The young man is the son of a very powerful businessman in Vegas, and the police want to lock Burl up. Milt manages to talk his fellow cops into giving him custody of Burl until the trial and takes the still-steaming man to their hotel room; Burl reciprocates by disappearing. Milt doesn't think anything else can go wrong---except it does. The next morning, the young man is found dead. Now Milt must forego the wonders of Las Vegas to try to find Burl and clear him from the charge of murder. He expects to get some help from the young widow's several brothers, who descend on the town "volunteering to help." But they are more involved with quarreling among themselves than in finding the murderer. Will Milt hit the jackpot? Susan Rogers Cooper has upped the ante with her latest, a fun-filled, adventure-packed addition to this consistently entertaining series.
Susan Rogers Cooper is an American mystery novelist. A self-proclaimed "half fifth generation Texan; half Yankee", she sets her novels in Texas (the E.J. Pugh and Kimmey Kruse novels) and in Oklahoma (the Sheriff Milt Kovak novels). She is currently living in Central Texas, coming up with fresh new ways to get her characters into trouble.
Sheriff Milt Kovak goes to Vegas! Sheriff Milt accompanies his wife to a convention in Vegas and is soon involved in a murder case where his cousin's husband is the prime suspect. He is joined by his group of unorganized nephews in trying to solve the case. These Sheriff Kovak stories are always fun as Ms. Cooper often intersperses her story with wry and sometimes funny episodes. Recommended.
This is the first Cooper book I've read and I'll definitely look for some more by her. The Vegas location was fun and the characters were well drawn. It's an entertaining easy read with a good plot. The only issue I had with this book was when the main character stated prostitution is legal in Vegas. If she had done her research, she'd know prostitution is not legal in Clark County where Las Vegas is.
Not reading this series in order; however, I thought this title sounded interesting. The Detective is on vacation and his cousin gets arrested for murder of his son-in-law. He was beating up his daughter, but did he kill him? I like how this detective does old school detective work to get to the bottom of the case. Will read the rest in the series for sure!
I really like this series, but it has some crude language, so I can't give it more stars. A great interaction between the sheriff and his psychiatrist wife.
