4.5! Briefest of overviews: 15 middle school students get "volunteered" to participate in a game piloting a gigantic robot. What's at stake? Our Earth's survival. Each kid takes a turn running the robot in a fight against another behemoth, if the human race is to survive they must win. Unfortunately the kids learn pretty quickly that the pilot--win or lose--forfeits his/her life after the battle. This sets up a thought provoking scenario well-explored over 2000 pages of Manga. The reader gets backstory into each child and his motivations, anxieties, and opinions over facing this soul-crushing responsibility. I have only a passing understanding of Japanese culture but I enjoyed seeing some of my broad-stroke ideas play out among the characters. Responsibility to one's community, desire to bring honor to one's family, and the pervasive cultural-malaise all crop up repeatedly throughout the story. Think I'll be turning this story over in my head for a while.
