Niall Ferguson did in
The Ascent of Money: A Financial History of the World, but he doesn't. On the plus side, for those who know anything about economics, you will appreciate how Mr. McMillan avoids the economic dogmas of the political right and left and even shows how both sides are either wrong or right in certain circumstances. Ultimately, this book is just a series of interesting economic case studies that fails to achieve its intended purpose of making economics understandable to the masses.
