Mummy Mazes: A Monumental Book

Rate this book
The first new idea in maze books since Egyptian times. Originally self- published, Mummy Mazes has won awards and seals of approval from Dr. Toy, The National Parenting Center, Independent Publishers, and Creative Child Magazine.

Written and drawn by Elizabeth Carpenter, Mummy Mazes is ingeniously designed to open up to 28 poster-size pages—these are deliciously big mazes, the kind kids will pore over for hours. There are mummies, monuments, and intricate murals, ancient gods and the Pharaoh’s mask, scarabs, an Egyptian night sky, and the Giant Sphinx who guards the pyramid complex at Giza. The meticulously drawn mazes lead kids through hieroglyphics, cracks in the limestone, detailed wall paintings, and more. Adding to the fun, each maze is linked by an adventure—the reader joins Professor Archie Ologist on an expedition from the Colossi of Memnon into the heart of long-lost tombs, learning along the way about the cat-goddess Bastet, why both men and women wore wigs, and how much linen it sometimes took to wrap an important mummy (three miles’ worth!). Once all the mazes are completed, there’s a hieroglyphic puzzle to solve at the end—and then the whole doubles as a coloring book. The pages are perforated to tear, color, and then display on the wall.

About the author

Elizabeth Carpenter is an award-winning illustrator, maze-maker, board and card game designer, writer, and entrepreneur who founded the company Mazeology. In the early 1990’s, Elizabeth began developing a unique art style that weaves a maze path through original hand-drawn line-art illustrations. Initially created for the amusement of her young son, her illustration-based mazes proved to be very popular and led to the publication of DinoMazes and Mummy Mazes (both Workman), two educational maze books for children that weave history, problem solving, and art into a story intended to make learning fun. Her work has won many awards, including the 2012 IPPY Gold Medal for Children’s Interactive Book of the Year Award for Dino Mazes.

Elizabeth continues to create her illustrations by hand, now drawing them directly into the computer on a Wacom tablet. She gives frequent talks to children to show them how they can also become a maze-maker with tips as to how they can turn their own drawings into mazes! She is a regular contributor to magazines (Highlights), has designed a line of coloring maze greeting cards, and her latest publication, Enchanting Mandala Mazes (Get Creative 6), is a coloring maze book for adults and kids. Prior to her career as a maze-maker, Elizabeth attended Carnegie-Mellon University and the Rhode Island School of Design, working for 27 years as a successful fashion designer (The Limited Stores, Associated Merchandising Corp.), fashion director (Foxmoor Casuals, Brooks Fashions), and trend forecaster (Shop Shots). She lives in the West Village of New York City.

I'm addicted to puzzles and I love the mazes in this book! I've always been fascinated with mummies and Egypt. That was always my favorite thing to study in school. Mummy Mazes will keep you and your kid happily busy for a while. Five stars!

There's not lots of reading in this but each page unfolds with a totally cool maze for the kids to do. It contains a little bit of info....it could be a fun activity. I bought a copy of this to keep for next year's unit.
