Alfred Edmeades "Fred" Bestall, MBE (died in Porthmadog, Wales), was the author and illustrator of Rupert Bear for the London Daily Express, from 1935 to 1965.

Bestall produced his last Rupert story on 22 July 1965. He retired from the Daily Express in July 1965, but continued creating Annual publication covers until 1973.

Bestall also drew illustrations for the Whitcombe's Story Book, a form of children's reader published in Australasia by Whitcombe & Tombs Ltd. These books were undated; but Bestall's work appears in the 500 numbers, possibly published in the 1950s.

Bestall died on 15 January 1986, aged 93, at Wern Manor Nursing Home in Porthmadog, Wales.[1] He is buried in plot 100 of Brookwood Cemetery.

This was one of the better Rupert the Bear books, and my younger cousins ages 8-10 agree.

How to make Rupert's Paper Star

This looked really cool since if you fold the paper correctly you can cut one line and when you unfold it have a perfect star. Unfortunately, paper here in the U.S. is a different size to standard UK paper and mine didn't come out quite right. My cousins were a bit disappointed. Oh, well.

Rupert and the Dover Sole

This was very similar to another Rupert tale where all the flowers smelt like something else. In this story we have the air filled with the smell of violets, the roast beef, a delicious fish dish called Dover Sole. This was fun and better that the other sent story. It features the Inventor and every single Nutwood cat.

How to Make Rupert's Paper Butterfly
This came out much better than the Star, and I'm pleased to say it wasn't too hard.

Rupert and the Distant Music

A fun Pied Piper type tale with children being kept from school.

Rupert and the Compass

This was on of my favorites in the book. Rupert and Edward Trunk go adventuring in the fog only to get sent in circles by their compass and to a dead tree with a secret in it. Abandoned ruins and hidden treasure, what's not to love?

Rupert's Magic Painting ps of Pleasure Island
I've always wish that I'd find one of the paintings NOT painted so I could do it myself and see if they still work. These ones wouldn't be considered politically correct since they are of the Coons who look like Gollywogs.

Rupert and the Dog Roses

Rupert finds a strange yellow dog-rose which ensnares him when he tries to pick it. We have strange goings on in the garden and imps of spring to set everything right.

Rupert and the Rock Pool

The best Rupert stories are always the adventure ones in my opinion, and this one has flying fish, an adventure by raft and a cave full of sea creatures and all just because Rupert was looking for small rare fish to put in his friend's aquarium.

Yet another typical and enjoyable Rupert annual. Not my favourite selection of Rupert stories, but perhaps the fact that I have read three Rupert annuals in the past two days has something to do with that - you can perhaps have too much of a good thing. Spacing out the reading of the annuals would prevent them feeling too repetitive or same-ish.
