Elzie Crisler Segar was a cartoonist, best known as the creator of Popeye, a pop culture character who first appeared in 1929 in Segar's comic strip Thimble Theatre.
With volume ten we find E.C. Segar at the pinnacle of his art. The volume continues the Spinachovia story from volume nine - now there's war coming to Popeye's island, whose population turns out to be one of cowards. Next are the classic stories with Eugene the Jeep and Poopdeck Pappy. The volume closes with the start of 'Mystery Melody', which introduces the sea hag. Segar's mixture of adventure, suspension (he stretches story arcs over multiple panels, sometimes milking an event to the max), and humor (lots of humor) is infectuous, and this volume shows that the Popeye comic strip belongs to the best the art form has to offer.
I have all the other volumes but somehow never managed to get hold of this volume until now. This volume concludes the Spinachova story and introduces Eugene the Jeep and later on Poopdeck Pappy. Segar has an amazing imagination and a great sense of humour.
The Complete E.C. Segar Popeye series is a great collection of an iconic America's Everyman from his original creation by E.C. Segar. If you want a feel for America's every day life in the depression days & enjoy hilarity without today's limiting p.c. culture, I highly recommend you get to know the real Popeye!! I have all the volumes (just recently purchased the only one I was missing) but this volume is noteworthy as it introduced the amazing Eugene the Jeep & Poopdeck Pappy as well as showcasing Segar's storytelling skills in several tales, all from the daily newspaper strips of the 1930s when comics were king! Thanks Fantagraphics!!
