Understanding Women with AD/HD is designed to be a practical and readable guide for women at any age, with special chapters focusing on different stages of life.
I have read a few books and resources on ADHD, but this book gave me insights that I have not found elsewhere. I already revisited the book a few time and will remain a resource at arms reach...
I really liked this collection of essays on women with ADHD. It balances excellent depth with an easy-to-read format. I appreciated the range of issues that it covers, including work, parenting, relationships, hormone fluctuations, medications, therapies, comorbid conditions, and more.
The chapters are authored by a variety of experts and civilians, which was kind of cool but also had its drawbacks. Overall, it makes the book a bit uneven and repetitive. Different authors make several key points over and over in their different chapters, and a few of the chapters really stuck out as less scientific or even a little "woo-woo" / "hippie-dippie."
But the chapters that are good are really good, and the organizational scheme of the book really works. I finally got the comprehensive, in-depth overview of key issues that affect women with ADHD that I was looking for, all organized into one neat little book. Sure, it was published 14 years ago, but I walked away from it with a much deeper understanding and the ability to speak confidently about these issues with others.
Now I just want a good book on women with ADHD that was written (or even revised) this decade : )
Wow this book needs a new cover…despite that, I found the read worthwhile. Some content was really outdated (released in 2002), but there were still significant portions that were really helpful. Each chapter was written by a different expert in that specific study and so there was some repetition of data and points made, but it really didn’t bother me.
Pretty accessible in content and the structure of that content. You could easily pick it up and read a chapter on challenges specific to college or a chapter on how hormones significantly impact symptoms of ADHD, without feeling like you had to commit to the entire book.
Great book for women who got a late diagnosis like me. I found that there are other people like me, which gave me a sense of hopefulness, forgiveness and peace.
4-1/2 stars! Informative, well-written, though published in 2002 so not that current. Still, good to read experts' take on ADHD and women, specifically.
this book literally changed my life. if you a female with ad/hd--and fibromyalgia [fms]--this book is an absolute MUST. the entire chapter 5 is about fibromyalgia, and the link between it and add in women. what disturbs me is that so little research has been done on this; you can bet that if fibromyalgia affected mostly men, we'd have had answers at least 10 year ago..
Even if it's composed by different chapters/articles and not all of them hold the same level of interest, I still rate it 5 stars for its clear, well organized and pertinent approach to the subject. A must read for anyone interested in learning about female AD/HD.
Total awesomeness! Helpfully explains intricacies on many levels like influence of hormones on a woman's ADD while exploring other coexisting conditions. Thoughtfully written with positive style.
