Looking for a way to reactivate the conflict in India and drive the French from the sub-continent, the British Chiefs of Staff call on Captain Adam Horne and his band of expendable cutthroats to undertake the deadly mission. Reprint.
This is the second in the series about the Bombay Marines. This time Adam Horne and his men are given the task of capturing a French ship carrying a cargo of gold to pay the French Army. What Horne and his men don't know is they are supposed to fail in their mission and politely die. However the men, who planned this mission, did not take into consideration that Horne and his men just might not care to turn up dead. The action is pretty good and it comes along fast. It was strange that you don't really know the characters in the Bombay Marine, but you feel like you have some knowledge of each man. The story does have some of the characters die and they die like they lived. Does Horne and his men make it to the end of the story well some do and some don't. Is the French gold captured well of course these guys are the Bombay Marines. There is one more book to read in this series, which I getting ready to read.
This review is from: The War Chest (Kindle Edition)
This isn't Patrick O'Brian but is good. More action and less character development than O'Brian, but it is very good action. If the history is accurate, it is also interesting that the story is set amongst a little-known private military organisation, the Bombay Marine.
Sent on a secret mission to steal a war chest filled with enough gold to make everyone's dream come true, Captain Horn and his Bombay Marines will use every ounce of courage and cunning to achieve their success. If they're not blown out of the water first.
Continuing the story of the Bombay Marines, Adam Horne and his now 5 remaining men completes a coup and gains a chest of gold for The East India Company
A fun little read, easy and simple. It's styled after the stories of Horatio Hornblower (which I haven't read) and is one in the middle of a series. It has straightforward seafaring action, including cannons and explosions, bloody vicious combat, etc., and it also has some nice little historical tidbits about the time and place that it's set in (British India and the Indian Ocean). No romance, and nothing overly sentimental or deep. Just a straightforward nautical adventure that filled some time just fine.
