Seen as old-fashioned now, but each of these stories teaches good morals. This particular one teaches kindness to animals, the risks of horseplay, and helping others during an emergency.

Young Reader (10)): The idea of paper dolls intrigued our daughter, but she struggled to finish the book. She predicted exactly what would happen to Bertie well before the ice broke, and thought the whole thing was "fake."

This is a very stylized story. Pros: Sweet illustrations and a happy ending could make this a nice selection for reading at the holidays.

Review via Cracking the Cover
First published in 1950, “Flicka, Ricka, Dicka and Their New Skates” has an innocent charm to it that is missing in its counterparts of today. It serves as a nice transition from the buildup of receiving presents to the appreciation of them after the holidays.

Though the tale is more than 60 years old, it’s still relevant. Parents and grandparents will love revisiting characters from their own childhoods and children will relate to the excitement of trying out new gifts and the adventures that can come seemingly out of nowhere.

A special bonus to this book is the addition of paper dolls found inside the back cover. Little girls will love playing with these sweet characters. Most of the dolls and clothes punch out easily, however there are a few items, including the dog Mike, that will require adult supervision as they’re cut out with scissors. Also, please keep in mind there are two versions of this book available. One does not include the paper dolls. If you want them, make sure you get the updated version.

I read this series of books when I was very young. I loved the books because the girls were identical triplets, and that was fascinating to me. Now, seeing this book again many years later, I find that the story is very cute, and the old-fashioned illustrations very quaint-looking. In this story, Flicka, Ricka and Dicka save a young boy when he falls through the ice.

Both myself and my children adore the Flicka, Ricka, Dicka books. This one is wonderful as the girls show a beautiful example in how they treat another child after they had made a poor choice. I would love to see these books receive the attention they deserve as each one gives heartwarming examples of familial love, honor, hard work, kindness, selflessness, repentance and forgiveness.
