"Not since Use of Weapons has a novel managed to so single-handedly revitalise the reenergise the SF field."Yes, they are praising it by comparing it to Use of Weapons, probably the worst sci-fi novel ever written. Ian M. Banks himself and China Mieville are quoted praising the book: both appallingly over-rated writers. Some good writers are also listed, but the whole thing really makes me wonder what is going on with science fiction. It's as if there is a whole parallel industry that turns out shit but also publishes magazines and runs awards ceremonies to proclaim how good it is. Notably many of these authors crossed over from writing literary fiction, which is a genre that has always been shit and yet has always cultivated a popular perception that it isn't, and that if you don't like it that is your failing as a reader, or more likely as a human being.
