About the author

A French illustrator, painter, writer and filmmaker, known for the surreal nature of his work. He was of Polish Jewish origin and spent the early years of his life in Savoy where his family hid him from the Nazi peril.

Roland Topor wrote the novel The Tenant (Le Locataire chimérique, 1964), which was adapted to film by Roman Polanski in 1976. The Tenant is the story of a Parisian of Polish descent, who develops an obsession regarding what has happened to his apartment's previous tenant. It is a chilling exploration of alienation and identity, asking disturbing questions about how we define ourselves. The later novel Joko's Anniversary (1969), another fable about loss of identity, is a vicious satire on social conformity. Themes Topor returned to in his later novel Head-to-Toe Portrait of Suzanne (1978).

A new presentation of The Tenant by Roland Topor was released in October 2006. The book has Topor's original novel, a new introduction by Thomas Ligotti, a selection of short stories by Topor, a representation of Topor's artwork and an essay on the famous Roman Polanski film version. There is a working possibility of having Mr. Polanski write a new foreword to this edition.

In 2018, Atlas Press published Topor's Head-to-Toe Portrait of Suzanne, translated and introduced by Andrew Hodgson. It was the first of Topor's novels to enter English in nearly 50 years.

Journal in Time —uit te spreken zowel op zijn Frans (intiem dagboek) als op zijn Engels (dagboek in de/op tijd)— is een collectie cursiefjes van creatieve duizendpoot Roland Topor. Ik ken Topor van zijn samenwerking(en) met Alejandro Jodorowsky, die u dan weer kan kennen, indien niet van El Topo, dan toch van de nimmer gerealiseerde Dune verfilming, of van de stripreeks L’Incal met Mœbius. Maar we zijn nog geen paragraaf ver, of we verdwalen al in noodzakelijke namedropping. Topor maakt deel uit van een antidogmatische, anarchistische en burlesque beweging, die een climax vindt in Panique, dat hij opricht samen met Jodorowsky en Fernando Arrabal. Maar ik stoppen, en enkel nog Téléchat vermelden, de Frans-Belgische paradie op het televisiejournaal, dat de mensen van mijn generatie en ouder zich nog wel zullen herinneren.

Deze collectie cursiefjes, in lengte variërend tussen een kwart blad en enkele luttele bladzijden, sluit daar perfect bij aan. Ze bevatten een vaak burlesque satire, met een gevatte kijk op de samenleving vat toen, met een luchtigheid (en soms ook onbezonnenheid) die tegenwoordig vaak zoek is. Het is enorm ontspannend, mondjesmaat te consumeren of net in één ruk uit te lezen. Te situeren ook in het surrealisme van Man Ray en het absurdisme van Beckett… of Arrabal. En daarmee is de cirkel een beetje rond.

Trochę się rozczarowałam tym zbiorem miniatur, humor taki z poprzedniej epoki, więc też niekoniecznie, ale kilka razy szczerze uśmiechnęłam się do tych literek i znalazłam kilka ciekawych pomysłów wartych zapamiętania.

Nierówne, specifyczne, ale pozwoliło mi lepiej zrozumieć inspiracje Kereta, niektóre elementy twórczości Topora mocno u Kereta przebijają. Na tak, ale na pewno nie dla wszystkich.

Jedno z najlepszych zbiorów opowiadań jakie czytałem, daje do myślenia często w abstrakcyjnych tematach a czasami w stosunkowo przyziemnych.
Uwielbiam wracać do tej książki czytam ją już kolejny raz jedyne co mnie powstrzymuje od dania tej książce 5/5 to seksizm i mizoginizm, ciężko na to przymykać oko ale autor wydaje się mieć na tyle dużą obsesje na punkcie mężczyzn że o istnieniu kobiet zdaje się zapominać
