I remember being glued to the television in 1989 when the footage of Flight 232 crashing in Sioux City, IA played over and over again on newscasts. We didn't have YouTube or camera phones, and an amazing piece of video like that was truly memorable. Jerry Schemmel not only survived the crash but went back into the burning wreckage to save an 11-month-old baby girl. His story of the crash and his spiritual transformation afterward are interesting and inspiring.
The other thing that I found intriguing was how technology has completely changed how a situation like that would be handled. Schemmel's struggle just to communicate with his wife immediately after the crash would be unthinkable now. Also, the way such an event would be covered in the media is quite different.
