Revelation for Today

Rate this book
Revelation is the Bible's most puzzling book. Though it has inspired some of the world's greatest literature and art, to many readers the book remains a total mystery--a hodge-podge of strange, mystical symbolism and obscure references. Now James M. Efird provides a clear, readable look at the meaning of Revelation. Probing the mysterious book to its very core, Efird offers the best of modern scholarship in an accessible way. Efird places Revelation in its historical context (approximately AD 90), and explains its message for us today. Revelation for Today features an appendix on ways to teach the book, designed for pastors and church school teachers.

My study of Revelation continues even though I finished reading the book Revelation for Today by James Efird today. As with most literature, the context of your reading determines to a great extent the pleasure of your reading. The context for my reading includes taking part in a great weekly study through my church. The study has been amazing, a great presentation by a great friend. As you might determine from that statement, I loved this book. I have feared Revelation my entire life and have really only half studied it. This book (and the study) changed that for me. When you are reading the book, have your Bible handy. Efird does not include the Bible passages as he explains what they mean. Big takeaway? Revelation needs interpretive help to understand it; and, the interpretation from another language only confuses the issue more!

A short commentary that was helpful for understanding apocalyptic literature, and gives the "point" or "main idea" throughout John's Revelation. Used for a sermon series.

I wish I had a shelf labelled 'Reason' to put this on. This is perhaps one of the best prescriptions against all of the intimidation underwent from religious Christian zealots bound to scare you to their faith by giving you florid descriptions of damnation. If you want to understand how eschatology gets distorted, and try and understand where these ideas come from and what they mean take a read. It isn't too dense, but can help you combat any of Fundamentalist on good ground or fan of the 'Left Behind' franchise.
