In "The Mercenary," Alan le Naper, knight of Stirlingshire and Lennox, has been hired by a French nobleman to accompany him on the 9th Crusade with King Louis XI of France. After a disaster of a crusade which accomplished nothing, Alan and his men return to their homeland in Scotland, but first seek to collect their pay. They find the village destroyed and everyone dead except for the Lady Rosemonde, duchesse d'Auxerre. Alan finds he has an instant attraction, but has a wife back home.
Years later, after another defeat in a skirmish with the English, widower Alan ends up in France again, and meets up with Rosemonde... and a son is born.
It's an historical adventure set in the 13th century Scotland and France.
