I loved this book!! Most of the time I am a hopeless romantic and I read a lot of romance. But there is a tiny little part of me,deep down inside, that is sick, twisted and demented. Every so often the little imp makes an appearance and demands to be satisfied. While The Savage Sleeps took care of this quite nicely! It's scary and creepy and sad and, oh, all kinds of things. It is a murder mystery/thriller/paranormal that kept me guessing until the end.

It also had me semi-paralyzed when I went to bed.
****Spoiler****

"Then she crawled back into bed, burrowing beneath the covers and closing her eyes. But only for a few seconds. She jumped when she felt her toe pressing against slimy, cold flesh.
Someone was in her bed with her.
She screamed, swung her head to the right, and found a pair of flat, listless eyes staring back, only inches from hers."

Okay. I read a lot of books where the thought of someone in my bed with me would be fabulous! REALLY not the case here! I was afraid to move. If my toe had touched a wrinkle in the sheets, I would have had a heart attack. The whole book is full of little treasures like this!

Cameron Dawson is the asst sheriff in a town where people are being butchered left and right. And he is a very emotionally broken man. And even though Mr. Kaufman did not remind me every other page of Cameron's bulging muscles, wicked grin, dreamy eyes,or impressive package,he has created a character you could very easily fall in love with. To be fair, Kyle Bancroft, the psychic who comes to town to help him, is a quite likable sort herself.

This book has a few broken hearts, a lot of OMG!!s, a pinch of romance and a generous amount of tears.

I know this is not exactly a review, but I did really enjoy reading this and I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. I'm not a psychic, but I see great things ahead for this author!

After reading and loving Twisted by this author, I think my expectations were too high for this book. At 30% and with hints of paranormal activity, I wasn't feeling optimistic. I went back and read the blurb and some reviews and received an attitude adjustment. I felt better about the book after that.

This book is the author's first novel. It's not bad, but it's not great, either. It could use some serious paring down of details. For example, I didn't really need to read that a syringe containing a brown liquid laying on a blue paper towel had leaked, leaving a wet spot below the needle tip where the towel had absorbed it. That's shortened and paraphrased, by the way. Much of the beginning of the book dragged on with several gruesomely described murders, and Kyle's paranormal visions were very confusing and easily skimmed. With better editing and elimination of the minute details, perhaps faster pacing and more tension would have resulted.

I did like the characters. Cameron's grief and guilt over the loss of his wife and son was realistic. I liked that Kyle's brother, Josh, accepted that she has a "gift."

I'm glad I read Twisted first. Kaufman has shown growth as an author, and now I'm curious about the second book, The Lion, The Lamb, The Hunted, which I have.

It’s simple:
If you haven’t read this book, you must.
If you’ve read it and your life hasn’t been permanently touched-are you still human?
I read “While the Savage Sleeps” some weeks ago, immediately after I read Andrew’s “The Lion, the Lamb, the Hunted,” and I can’t get either novel out of my mind (not that I wish to do so). I am in awe at the depths of creativity Andrew E. Kaufman has available to plumb. I’ve been a voracious and constant reader for many decades, and a writer of several unpublished novels, so I have some concept of what is required of an author to write well. Many authors can; but Andrew E. Kaufman goes beyond that and leaps into the unplumbed reaches of Imagination. This is an author I will never stop reading, for as long as I live-and beyond.

WHILE THE SAVAGE SLEEPS is one of those rare books that can not be easily classified- part thriller, part paranormal suspense- 100% MAGNIFICENT!
Andrew E. Kaufman has shown himself to be a first rate writer in that he has that rare abilityto combine original and intriguing characters, locations and plot into a work of pure perfection.
As one who has read many, many books- it is so nice to have one come along, like While the Savage Sleeps that so distinguishes it from the rest! Andrew E. Kaufman is one great writer and I have no doubt, a novelist we will be hearing much more from.

Have you ever seen the movie Ghost with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze? This book reminds me of this movie except with a horrific overtone. I had so many emotions reading this, at one point I was anxious then scared then I was crying my eyes out. This is a must read for anyone especially the horror addicts! It is a very well written book and you are halfway through before you realize it. There is no foul language which goes to show that it isn't necessary to have an outstanding book. Thank you Andrew for this fabulous book!!!

This was reasonably enjoyable for a paranormal mystery thriller with some graphic horror scenes, but didn't really jump out as anything truly special.

However, I will use this opportunity to talk you into reading Twisted by this author, as that was bloody brilliant, and was in my Top Ten Books read in 2015, which is no small achievement considering the amount of books I get through each year.

Here's the link to my review of Twisted:

The first chapter opens with a gruesome murder involving hooks used for lifting hay bales. I was thinking, ‘oh, what have I gotten myself into?” I decided I wasn’t in the mood for that kind of story and shut off my kindle. The next day I picked it up again, and I’m glad I did! I ended up glued to this book until the very end. It’s a very fast paced thriller, leaving me thinking ‘what is going to happen??’ It is set up in short chapters changing pov from Cameron a cop who has suffered his own personal tragedy and is just trying to move on with life. The other pov is with Kyle, a doctor a few hours away that has the gift of ‘sight’. She has visions of past or future events that hit her anywhere, anytime during her life. She starts ‘seeing’ a ghostly little girl that leads her to the town where murders are happening.

I loved this story! I highly recommend it to any fan of mystery, thrillers, or even horror. Thank you Mr. Kaufman! I am anxious to read more of your work.

I tried so hard to get through this but I just could not do it. I love, love horror novels but this is really, really bad!
There are just some glaring mistakes that I probably noticed because the story was so boring! It started out good but then just really fell off for me.
Bethany at first is called a child every time she is referenced then all of a sudden she is a woman? Also, why is Kyle performing surgeries? She has these visions etc that actually at times knock her down to the floor etc.., has no idea when they will come yet she is still doing surgeries?
With all the 5 star reviews I kept waiting for it to get better but it really didn't! 5 murders in a small town with cops that have never seen a murder plus one is a senator's daughter yet they get no outside help?
I also really got sick of "the smell of death" it seemed to be randomly thrown in every chance the author got.
Little things like a cinnamon roll still has steam rolling off it but was sitting there for 10 minutes were just annoying also. There was also a instance where someone put a rake into the ground because she was annoyed to have to talking to the cop Cameron. Really!? How do you even do that, shove a rake into the ground?
To much showing off what the author knows about autopsy's and not enough attention to detail in the rest of the book.

This book is a lot of things - thriller, suspense, mystery with a twist of paranormal. We even find a little romance along the way. But the biggest label that should be attached is Bestseller. For me, Kaufman's writing is flawless.

Some of the scenes, particularly at the beginning, are gruesome. However, unlike some authors who rely on lots of graphic violence to carry the story, Kaufman gives us just enough to let our imaginations run wild. The plot has multiple layers with characters you'll want to follow into the dark places. Once you start this one, you won't want to put it down.

What starts as a gory and gruesome serial killer horror story and ends as a 5 tissues ghost story! I LOVED this gut wrencher! What is going on in Faith, New Mexico with all these murders and disappearances? And who is the scary little green eyed blond ghost that Kyle is seeing?

For a book that was originally published in 2010 and being a horror novel, how had I never heard of this one before? Don't ask me! But I am so glad that it came across my Scribd recommendations page! This book started out with one of the most Clive Barker-ish gory serial killing that I have ever read....and the tool of torture is hay baling HOOKS!!! OMG! Yes, the depiction and description of hooks entering the flesh, as it pulls and tears........what the hell is going on in the town of Faith? It sure in the HELL is not anything faithful!! As the murders, and suicides are mounting, Cameron Dawson moves back to his hometown and takes a job as the new assistant Sheriff and immediately starts unfolding that pages that flip and fly as fast as they can come at you!

Miles and miles away in Albuquerque; young female Doctor Kyle Bancroft is going crazy seeing a ghost of a little 6 year old green eyed blond girl who is sending her visions and messages that 'Time is running out.....' yes, Kyle is a person with 'the gift of sight' and can see ghosts of people who have not passed on yet.

Get ready to delve into a book with graphic scenes of horror but not stomache churning horror, but the kind that makes you shake your head and the types that make you shake your head, then say OMFG! Now, what more can you ask for with a horror/ghost story with 11 year old shy kids who murder their entire families then commit suicide? A book that if the end (that was sorta predictable, but I still loved it!) does not effect you in some way.....(i bawled like a baby) then you are not paying attention to what you are reading or listening to! Yes, I listened to the Audio book on Scribd, and cannot recommend this one more than just 'Read it!' If it wasn't for the quick end, it would have gotten a 5 star rating...however with that being said, this one gets a 4 👻👻👻👻 rating but a 5 🩸🩸🩸🩸🩸 for the violence, balancing out to 4.5 out of 5!

It takes a lot to rattle this seasoned veteran of the fright night generation, but Andrew Kaufman managed to shake me up with his shadowy serial killer mystery. Shortly after finishing the book, I received the link to the book trailer. Okay, I admit with my first click I nearly jumped out of my skin, then of course, laughed at myself for being ridiculous. What makes the book scary? For me, it’s the realness of the murders and the knowledge that this type of sadistic evil really lurks in the world. However, lots of books portray evils, so what makes this special? After sleeping on it, I determined the story possesses two important elements that when working together, is pure chemistry. First, the tone of the writing. In some plot driven tales, the tone can be lost and sound flat. Here, the tone is never over played or sensationalized. It is contained, restrained, and depicted with such stark detail that the imagination has no choice but to fill in the blanks. As Stephen King said, the best special effects are in our own minds. My mind was lead just enough to create the world Kaufman was hoping I’d see. Secondly, the fright factor is increased because of the story’s honesty. What do I mean? The characters never waver beyond their abilities. There is no super power genius or rich hero budget, but rather hometown people dealing with a crisis. Each character is credible. I can not stress how important this is in suspense writing. I recommend watching the book trailer. All I can say is I’m looking under my covers before I crawl in bed tonight!

The most gruesome scenes happen within the first 50 pages. Luckily, the suspense keeps climbing, but those who can’t handle graphic detail might wuss out. The basic background plot of the male main character was a bit cliche as far as crime fiction goes. The cop who blames himself for someone’s death. Still, I shrugged it off because it worked with the story. Do I wish for perfection and want him to be shaped by a more original character formula, yes, but I’ll live.

I am really liking Andrew E. Kaufman. The first book I read was Twisted and I really enjoyed it. So when I found this one I was really excited to read it. It was not as good as Twisted but in my opinion it was good in its own rights.

For me I see the author as a cross between Koontz and King. He has the weirdness of Koontz and the craziness of King. What can I say other than I love it.

The characters Cameron the assistant sheriff and Kyle the psychic doctor were very likable and believable. Although there were times I really could not figure out what Kyle's visions were leading up to, but in the end it all came together. I also feel he ended the story in a way that he could write more with these characters in the future.

Well, I'm not sure what to say here. As my previous updates have said, I found it incredibly cheesy and corny in parts, with phrases and sentences that seemed to be plucked straight out of a cowboy film or an episode of Columbo.

Putting that aside, the story was very much a page turner, and it took my a while to work out what the genre of this book is - I'd describe it as paranormal/supernatural thriller.

The ending made me cry, I didnt expect it at all. And I've upgraded it from 2 stars to 3.5, after having a rethink and letting the cheesy bits just go over my head. I've now got the next book by this author and I'm starting it straight away

Not bad at all, in the end :)

This book would have been three stars without the extremely soppy and anti-climactic ending. I carefully chose this book based on its excellent reviews on both goodreads and amazon. The "paranormal" aspect made me waver for a moment, but although it's not a genre I seek out, I certainly have read a lot of books with a slim hold on reality. After all, most of Stephen King's book are paranormal horror and I have read the lot of them. I am not comparing this book to anything Stephen King has written - it's not even close to being in that league!

Cameron Dawson is the assistant sheriff in Faith. He has returned there after his family life was torn apart. Soon, he will witness how the peaceful idyll of Faith is torn apart by a series of violent and inexplicable murders. It's a sort of evil that the little town has never seen before. In another place, a doctor named Kyle is having visions of a frightened little girl who tells her she only has five days to stop something horrible from happening. Not that Kyle knows where, but eventually she ends up in Faith to help Dawson.

As the ending comes I was like "huh - that's it"? Except it wasn't, it got even worse. Kyle has to help Dawson with his tragic loss as well. This touchy-feely soppy mess did not fit in with the rest of the book at all. I hardly know what to go by anymore - clearly high ratings and excellent reviews far from always go hand in hand with quality, insight and entertainment.

Another by this author and another I've loved. It was very cleverly done and kept my interest the whole way through. Two people are at a distance from each other but find themselves involved with a spate of bizarre killings in New Mexico. It could have a sequel which would be nice as the main 2 characters were both interesting people in their own right, especially Kyle. I'd like to learn more about her.
There were a lot of missing speechmarks for some reason, someone was Shelia then Sheila and then the odd missing word too. Minor annoyances but still shouldn't have been there.
I'd highly recommend this author, though.

Every so often a book comes along that stirs up quite a buzz. You hear people talking about it just about everywhere you go. In many cases, it's a book by an established author who has a huge following and is being pushed by a major publisher as their latest cash cow. Other times the book is by an unknown backed by the money of a major publisher, their latest find, and sometimes it's by an independent author seeking to make a go of it on their own.

Once upon a time, independent authors were only known in small circles because the authors lacked the means and the funds to distribute and market their books. But since the birth of e-books and the self-publishing boom, thanks in part to Amazon's Kindle digital publishing platform, independent authors are beginning to make their mark. One such author is Andrew E. Kaufman, whose debut novel While the Savage Sleeps quickly rose to the Number One spot on Amazon's Kindle Best-Seller List. Among the Kindle forums, it was all that was being discussed. Granted, many self-published novels are lackluster and leave a lot to be desired, as they are either poorly written or in major need of a good editor. Kaufman's novel is not one of these.

Faith, New Mexico, is a sleepy, little town nestled in the valley of two mountains. It can be described as picture perfect, where mom and pop-type stores are in abundance and crime is virtually non-existent, which is why, when the body of Deputy Bradley Witherspoon is discovered, savagely mutilated and strung up like a side of beef, it sends shock waves through the community. And it's only the beginning.

While Sheriff Cameron Dawson races against time to stop the murderer before he/she can strike again, Doctor Kyle Bancroft, a prominent and "gifted" physician in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is being visited by mysterious visions of an old hospital and a little girl who delivers a dire warning: time is running out. As Kyle struggles to make sense of her visions, the body count in Faith continues to climb. Will Kyle be able to figure our the riddle of her visions in time to help Sheriff Dawson before the killer strikes again?

I'm normally not one to follow the herd, so to speak. I've never read a Grisham novel, as he tends to be consumed by the masses. A new one comes out, it's all you see on the train in the morning. I refuse to be one of those people. I read King, I read Koontz, but at the time I started reading them, I was young enough not to know who they were or just how popular they were with the masses. The fact that Kaufman's novel was being billed as a paranormal forensic thriller, I had my doubts. Forensic thrillers? Can't say I'm a fan. Paranormal? Okay, I admit it. Paranormal, supernatural, I'm so there. Numerous 5-star ratings on Amazon? Amazon ratings have burned me in the past, so it didn't really sway me. It's was the buzz online that finally swayed me. And let me tell you. . . I don't know what I was expecting, but what I wasn't expecting was a fast-paced, well-written mystery that I didn't want to put down.

Kaufman has a way of ending each chapter unfinished, prompting you to read on with an urgency, a need to know what happens next. There aren't many writers who can hook me in the first chapter and carry me all the way through to the end. In fact, the only author who has been able to do this to me in the past was early Dean Koontz, and even he seems to have lost something, as I have struggled with his more recent works.

Were there things about While the Savage Sleeps that I didn't like? Yes, but that can be said about every book I read. In recent years, only one book has blown me away so completely that there wasn't a bad thing I could say about it. While the Savage Sleeps comes close to that, and what I didn't like about it wasn't necessarily a bad thing; it just didn't work for me. There was a romance element that seemed out of place with the rest of the story. In my opinion, it didn't fit, but others I have heard from loved that aspect of it. It was the light in the darkness, as Kaufman's novel is dark.

All in all, While the Savage Sleeps is a breakout novel from a promising new author, and Andrew E. Kaufman is definitely a talent to watch out for, and I eagerly await his next novel. I highly recommend checking out While the Savage Sleeps.

I just finished reading While the Savage Sleeps and it is one of the best books I've read in a long time. I had a hard time putting it down to get anything else done all weekend. It amazes me that this is a first book by Andrew Kaufman. What an amazing talent. It grabbed my attention from the very first page and kept me interested all the way through to the very last page. I loved all the characters, I hope to see some of them again in future books. The plot was great, not too long and drawn out but not too short either. It was all just right. I hope to see many more books in the future by this author. Well done Andrew Kaufman. Thanks for a great read.

I absolutely adored this book. I almost broke down crying at work because of it. At least twice. But it was so good! And the audiobook was phenomenal. I just can't get enough of Andrew E Kaufman.

I could have used a little more background on some more characters. More connection. They were done very well and I was connected to them but I just felt like there could have been more.

I loved the story but I kind of feel like the ending was too... easy? I kind of wish there would have been a fantastical element to it but either way, the overall story was just wonderful!

I am giving this book five stars for several reasons. First, because this book is everything and more with what people have recommended it to me have said about it. Second, because my husband and I are reading it at the same time and I have to fight with him to get it away from him or sneak in the times I am reading it. My husband has compared Drew Kaufman to a much more twisted, yet just as talented, Dean Koontz when my husband and I loved DK's writing. I can't wait to see more from this incredibly talented, creepy, twisted writer..this is just good writing!

Unputdownable!
I started this book this morning and couldn't put it down until late afternoon when it was finished.
This fast paced thriller had me on the edge of my seat through the horror of it all until the very end when it had me weeping.
I loved the characters and hope to see them again in future books.

While the Savage Sleeps by Andrew E. Kaufman by Andrew E. Kaufman

How does one review a book and make another feel the vast, roller coaster ride of intense, creepy, suspenseful, insanely awesome emotions? How does one explain their relentless curiosity to not only get to the final answer, but finding yourself so lost in the story you're no longer questioning as an outsider......You are questioning as though you are in the story right beside the characters for the entire ride?? You don't...not easily when matched against such a wonderful writer, but you sure as h*ll try with all you've got.....

If readers want me to say I liked this book I can't....because I absolutely LOVED it!! Murder and people gone missing, The most unlikely suspects, mystery, an elusive killer, psychic visions and the two main characters each on their own quests like no other they've ever seen. In the Prologue you're told about the town you are about to enter with scenery that drops you right in the middle of the road left to wonder what trip into a scary world are you about to enter? I was seriously gripped and grabbed into this at the first chapter. The first and second page of chapter one is without question this author's brutal and tempting bait that will almost literally hook you in with no mercy until the very end and then leave you begging for more. Just be happy you're not the prey.....

Andrew Kaufman is an exceptional, first-class story teller with the pure talent it takes to write with such vivid, unmistakable clarity through every place he takes you. Descriptive on such a level that you sense you have become one with the detective, Cameron, who became the local Sheriff in the town of Faith, New Mexico. You're as perplexed as he, racing the clock and searching for answers to horrid, grotesque and freakish crimes. Things that he has never witnessed in this small, quaint town that has suddenly become odd, mysterious and frightening. While at the same time feeling the pain with regards to the part of his life he physically left behind, but mentally it looms over and within him eating away at his existence. A very likable character who faces and must solve unimaginable crimes you just have to and can't help but get inside this characters mind and root for him, hoping for him to catch this vicious killer before another murder happens!!

Further away in Albuquerque New Mexico you begin you're journey into the world of the Doctor and psychic, Kyle. As with Cameron, with Kyle, you are now experiencing her life, surroundings, visions, fear, pain and uncertainty of what is happening in every scene....you hear so clearly what is being said, what she is seeing in her nightmarish visions and what chases her, finds her and grabs hold every place she goes. She cannot escape the horror that is screaming in her mind yet she has no idea of what's happening and what she is supposed to be doing with the images and shrieking noises in her head.....but she knows she has do something because it won't stop until she uncovers what she needs to know....

You also become the people of the town....written so well you feel the pain and anguish of the victims and their families, you are terrified and baffled. I found myself so perplexed so many times I kept knitting my eyebrows saying out loud "Whaaaat?", along the way thinking "Aha" with a nod of my head only to have the author sneak in yet another of many twists telling me my "Aha's" were either completely wrong or only a tiny grain of being correct. There are so many possible suspects, which are all very easy to keep up with, but you will find yourself going back and forth and back again between them until the very end when you are finely freed from this writer's grasp and shown some mercy!! As it all comes to a conclusion, as with most stories, you are left with questions, but Mr.Kaufman does have mercy on us and ties them up, bow and all, in a way I have never experienced with a book before. Brilliant, flawless and an exhilarating creepy as h*ll ride.

This is an author whose work should truly sit on the shelves beside the best of the best. It takes a 'lot' for a book to scare me and I'm always on the hunt for ones that will. This one did and is was freaking awesome!!

Mr. Kaufman has since written and released a very short story which was amazing "Desolation Road" with a very strong message/lesson. Also, his first novel in a series, but can be read as stand alone story, "The Lion, The Lamb, The Hunted" and its recently released sequel "Darkness and Shadows". "While the Savage Sleeps" is truly a must read and I will absolutely read it again!! Recommended to all who want an awesome creepy, spine chilling read!

Goodreads Description- TWO STRANGERS

Cameron Dawson's got a past he can't seem to shake, but he's hoping to change that. He's moved back home to Faith, New Mexico and taken a job as assistant sheriff. What he doesn't realize is that his newest nightmare's about to begin. Strange things are happening. People are disappearing, and for others, it's far worse …

DISTANCE SEPARATES THEM

Miles away in Albuquerque, Kyle Bancroft's life is spinning out of control. She's seeing, hearing, and dreaming things she can't explain: Flashbacks to World War II and an eerie hospital ward with locked doors, empty gurneys, and guttural screams. To make matters worse, a ghostly green-eyed girl is complicating her visions with an urgent message: Time is running out.

A DARK SECRET CONNECTS THEM

Kyle's otherworldly encounters are driving her straight toward Faith … and right into Cameron's life. The body count is rising, the pressure is mounting, and the clock is ticking as they rush to uncover a dangerous secret hiding just below the surface of this all-American town—one that's threatening to destroy Faith and everyone in it. A secret they must hunt down quickly … even if it costs them their own lives.

A VOICE FROM THE GRAVE WILL DRAW THEM TOGETHER.

Not all books deserve their 4 or 5 star ratings. This one does. It has a unique, exciting storyline that mixes mystery and suspense with forensics and even a hint of romance. The detail and complexity are expertly written in a way that is not frustrating…even the fact that I figured it out before the end didn’t irritate me as it usually does; caused me to say “bravo” instead. The characters are believable and memorable…they grow on you and I don’t think any of us would mind seeing some of them again.

I also have to say that many horror books don't really scare me but this one did. Some of the descriptions of what was happening to Kyle while she was having her visions totally freaked me out. To me that is a good sign of a horror book.

Like I said earlier, I figured out the ending in a general sort of way through Kyle's visions. One of the major reasons that I had to bump this down to a 4 star book was the ending and the cause of the murders was a little far fetched and was in line conspiracy theorists. Yeah maybe these things happened but for this to happen to an entire town and to take so long for the effects to take place really were a little hard to believe.

This is the second book I have read by Kaufman and I think it is definitely fair to compare him to Dean Koontz and Stephen King. His horror really is scary horror and he does a wonderful job with his craft. 4 stars!

4.5 stars

Cameron Dawson is trying to get to grips with his tragic past by coming home to Faith, New Mexico. He has taken the job of assistant Sheriff in the sleepy, quiet little town and his life seems to be settling into a peaceful routine. Until, that is, a sequence of gruesome and baffling murders strike the usually crime free town. Cameron can’t comprehend what is happening to people he has known for most of his life.

Dr Kyle Bancroft, miles away from Faith, is being bombarded with flashbacks, dreams of terrible occurrences, and paranormal experiences. A ghostly child is appearing to Kyle with a pressing and crucial message. Kyle has five days to stop something horrific happening. She can’t evade the feeling of dread and her chilling premonitions and perceptions are drawing her to Faith although she no idea why. She can only hope to be taken seriously and offer what help she can.

Cameron has never before been witness to events such as he now finds himself having to face. The suspects couldn’t be more unlikely, and there are several of them. As the evidence mounts up it takes an appalling direction. There’s no logic he can apply, no way to can rationalise events so he goes with a quote from Sherlock Holmes…when you have eliminated all which is impossible, then whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.’ Trusting Kyle’s psychic visions is his last hope.

A very fast-moving and multi layered storyline with high level suspense and, be warned if you’re squeamish, a very graphic, gruesome and, obviously very well researched given the attention to detail, forensic aspect in the first part of the book. Short and intensely descriptive chapters, some ending on mini cliff hangers, relentlessly draw you in.

The central figures are strong and compelling. Listening to the audio adds an extra dimension to their portrayal. Cameron especially, during his recollection of the heartbreaking events that changed his life. Luke Daniels puts a huge amount of emotion into his narration and so gives the characters that extra authenticity.

The only thing that didn’t quite gel for me was the relationship between Cameron (although he absolutely deserves some happiness after what he’s been through) and Kyle, but nevertheless it was a fantastic listen. And the ending had the tears flowing.

Well, I got through this fast. It kept me entertained and that's a biggie for me. The first part grabbed my attention and I liked the MC fine. The story opens with a grisly attack on a Deputy. He doesn't see the killer and you get no sense of him either. The scene is well written as is all of the scenes of violence throughout the book. The MC is Assistant Sheriff Cameron who grew up in the small town where this takes place. Has the usual "leave boring town, tragedy, come home to boring town to get away from the violence of the big city" story. This town has never had a homicide.
Enter MC#2, Kyle (female), who lives 200 miles away and has no idea what is happening in Faith, the Sheriff's small town. She is psychic and begins to have disturbing visions and dreams connected to the violence there. You know they eventually have to hook up, exchange facts, work together to fight the evil but it takes forever for it to happen and that became a sticking point for me. The switch from whats going on in Sheriff Camerons head and Kyles head made the story rather segmented. I also felt that the 'climactic' resolution near the end was too short and rather anti-climatic.

This gets a 2.5 from me but I feel there is a better book in this genre inside the author. The good things that kept me reading were enough and I can see where Kaufman is gonna write a great one.

On a personal note; I feel like an uneducated jerk posing as a real literary persona when I write a review like this. I certainly couldn't have written a novel half as good but I wanted to be honest.
