Even though it's more a girls book, I read it with the boys and they enjoyed it and had a good laugh, but it's a book we've read only once! I'm keeping it on my keepers shelf because it's a book I like to read and re- read with the girls (my nieces), I love the concept of this book and wish there was a whole series of them. Even though the kids enjoy the illustrations, I didn't, I wish they were more cultural related to enforce believes and values, I think there are just to many universal books out there that a little bit of home would be much appreciated. But I do understand the need to make it more for little readers everywhere, and hey if the kids love these illustrations that's what's important, right?
This is such a sweet book. It conveys a deep lesson in it's simplicity. Hamda is a little girl who wants to feel like she fits in with her big sisters. What would make her feel like she's a big girl? Hamda realizes that her sisters all wear veils when they go out, so now Hamda wants to wear one too! With the loving support of her family, she tries wearing the veil in different ways, all modeled after her older sisters. Nothing seems to work. But after speaking with her father, Hamda has an idea. She finds her own special way to wear the veil, and she fits right in with her sisters, all while being her own special self! This is a great book for western children to learn about and embrace another culture. Hamda is excited to wear a veil, and her sisters and family are excited for her. It breaks down that taboo that women in Arab nations must all feel oppressed by the veil. Here is a little girl who is proud and excited by her culture. I think Maitha Al-Khayat has done a wonderful job with this book. It is very worth trying to find a copy in English. The copy I found was printed in the UK and is very nicely bound and printed. I hope to find other books by this author in English translations. I thought this book was so sweet and lovely!
