Rhyka's reward for driving back the Neesien invaders with his Hawk-Wings is the Empire's newest Protectorate, Marutchi. Standing at the foot of Garthen-Ror's Spire, the old Activist fortress spans the Gate of Lost Souls. A bitter-sweet gift from the Lord High Recycler, Rhyka's forces are the bulwark of what lays between the Forbidden Lands and the Scavenger Empire. Surrounded by almost impenetrable forests filled with savage Ruins Dwellers, Rhyka's Protectorate is the empire's last outpost.

Ordered to abandon his wedding feast for a hasty mission into the Forbidden Lands; Rhyka is soon captured by a Trog raiding party. Enslaved deep, beneath the earth's surface, he is forced to work in the volcanic heat and filth of the Trog cess pits. Here, Rhyka meets the Brizarian assassin and former Ruins Dweller, Greythorn. Desperate to escape and resume his mission, Rhyka makes Greythorn a unique offer.

Greythorn is secretly delighted; for he seeks revenge on his former master, Todor Roth, usurper to the Dragon throne. Thanks to Todor's betrayal, Greythorn barely escaped Brizaria with his life. Imbued with a thirst for revenge, a bitter and vengeful Greythorn made a pact with the Trogs. After departing the Trog caverns for Marutchi, Greythorn observes the Scavengers as he makes up his mind to accept Rhyka's offer. After worming his way into Lizet's confidence, Greythorn takes the plunge and informs Lizet of Rhyka's plight. Simultaneously relieved and furious at Greythorn's audacity, Lizet sets the old spy master a test of fealty.

Back, deep below the earth's surface in the heat of the Trog kingdom, Greythorn had arranged for Gorsug, a Trog war leader to aid Rhyka to escape the clutches of the savage Trog king, Urgul, Dark Storm. But Rhyka's freedom will come at a price. Gorsug's clan face annihilation, unless they escape Dark Storm's clutches. Gorsug's price is a sanctuary beneath Marutchi. Humans and Trogs have fought each for four hundred years, with neither side offering quarter, yet Rhyka freely gives his word in exchange for his freedom.

Following their perilous escape into the Forbidden Lands, the trio are pursued by a band of plains dwelling Canbran warriors who hunt Trogs for sport. Sorely wounded in a battle with the Canbrans, the trio flee into the impenetrable Brizarian forest where they are confronted by three Elwarri warriors. The tall, pale, pointy-eared warriors drug the new found companions and return them to their tree-top empire.

Rhyka though near death, life is saved by an Elwarri medicine woman and her brother, Erfin and an unlikely pact is sworn between human, Trog and Elwarri.

Human, Elwarri and Trog hurry to Marutchi to confront the forces of the mad priest, Borkazee. For Erfin is an Elwarri Dreamer and has dreamed the flaming death of his sacred forest at the hands of Scovar Borkazee and his Activist horde.
Back in Brizaria, Borkazee's Activists prepare their final assault on the Scavenger Empire. Behind them, the Brizaria's protectorates lay in ruins. Todor Roth, the Scavenger pretender manipulated by his mistress, Rha-Knor, who has now risen to the sublime rank of Ti'cher, perpetuates a titanic struggle of good versus evil.

Before Rhyka can rally the remnants of the Scavenger Empire's shattered forces, he must overcome centuries of fear and loathing and convince his human soldiers to fight alongside traditional enemies of Elwarri and Trog. And against what will they pit their strength at arms with swords and shields but artefacts containing the dark power of the ancients?
