MacKay #2

His Wicked Promise

Rate this book
He would take her as his bride...but could she give her heart in return?

When Egan MacBain takes beautiful Glenda MacKay as his bride, it appears that he's done so for the noblest of reasons. In truth, he has vowed at last to claim the woman he's always loved--yet once lost--to another man. But the rugged Highlander is determined to keep his passion hidden while he woos her with his gentle caress and wicked kisses. For he will not have an unwilling wife and will only show his tenderness once she is tamed.

Although Glenda has agreed to the marriage, she's only done so to gain the protection of Egan's name. Yet this young widow of the once-powerful clan MacKay never expected that vows of love would leave her lips again, nor did she believe she'd ever hold any man so dear. But suddenly she finds herself succumbing to the strong, silent warrior who fills her with trepidations and a fevered, forbidden yearning to fulfill his wicked promise of the love--and the child--she aches for in the depths of the soul.

Samantha James

91 books503 followers
Growing up in Joliet, Illinois, Samantha James had many childhood aspirations--being a writer was never one of them. When she was ten, she was certain she was destined to be an astronomer. That soon changed (happened a lot during those pre-teen years!) when she decided archaeology was in her future. Detective work was her next goal, thanks to the Trixie Belden mysteries she was reading, and before long, nursing beckoned (courtesy of the Cherry Ames series). In college, she set her sights on teaching history, then briefly entertained the notion of becoming a flight attendant, only to discover she did not like to fly.

Having been raised in a family of avid readers, she was rarely without a book in hand. Her tastes were rather eclectic. She got hooked on the Doc Savage series and Edgar Rice Burroughs after her older brother finished them, in her teen years, moved on to Agatha Christie, Daphne DuMaurier, and Phyllis A. Whitney.

In the meantime, the right guy came along. They met on a semi-blind date at an office Christmas party. She was told he wanted to go out with her, and he was told she wanted to go out with him. Six months later, the U.S. Army shipped him off to Germany--and she wrote faithfully at least three times a week--she often jokes this was the start of her writing career!

Marriage followed, as well as three daughters. Samantha left the detective work to her husband and turned her attention to raising their girls. When her youngest was six months old, two things happened: 1) she read Moonstruck Madness by Laurie McBain and scrambled to find every historical romance she could lay her hands on; 2) her older brother revealed he was writing and submitting his short stories to big-name magazines. As he put it, "I've been rejected by the best of 'em."

The seed was planted. Rejection was a dreaded word, but Samantha figured, "Well, if he can take it, so can I."

That summer, she wrote not one book, but three--longhand, in a notebook, during naptime. Bedtime. Any time she could. The burning desire to write was a long time in coming--she was nearing thirty by then--but she discovered that once she set pen to paper, she couldn't stop.

Those three manuscripts did get the dreaded rejection letter (they're still languishing somewhere in her attic), but she finally hit pay dirt with her fourth. Samantha's brother promptly proposed collaborating on a fantasy together--alas, still unwritten... Nowadays, she's firmly convinced she's the queen of rejected titles for her books. She's only managed to retain two original titles thus far, but writing is indeed a dream come true...

To date, her books have been published in numerous foreign countries (her daughters' number one choice for show-and-tell were always the foreign editions of Mom's books). Known for her heartfelt, emotionally charged "three-hanky reads", her books have been nominated for numerous awards, and have consistently hit the bestseller lists.

Maybe someday she'll do that fantasy-romance collaboration with her brother. For now, she's having a great time spinning dramatic, passionate tales of old...

Egan has loved Glenda for years, but she was married to his best friend. Now her husband is dead and they are forced to marry. Their marriage is filled with angst and jealousy. Egan fears that Glenda is still in love with her first husband and how can he make her love him? Glenda lost her husband and child and she is afraid history will repeat itself so she keeps her heart closed. Egan is insecure, vulnerable but still a great alpha hero. Glenda is strong and feisty I wish she hadn't resisted Egan for so long but then again we wouldn't have had a story. Emotional and romantic read. A keeper!

I found this so weak. This book had me feeling all kinds of up and down that I'm not even sure how to rate this, the urge to give this a 1 star is strong. The first half I wanted to strangle the heroine. Glenda was cold, unreasonable, selfish and a complete shrew. The author for some reason wanted to write a grieving widow in the depths of debilitating mourning over her husband and newborn child and make it deliverable as a romantic lead. Like...seriously? Not the best time frame. A woman sobbing and crying over her dead husband (after 3 years) does not make for great romantic angst. It's a set up for misery. Especially when it takes up more than half of the story. 😕 In the second half it was the hero's turn to be an insufferable uninspiring ass. Egan was a stubborn, selfish, unfeeling jerk whose reactions to certain things were so misfired, mean, confusing AF and underwhelming that it just undermined the supposed love and yearning these two kept fighting to tamp down. For one, you supposedly have been secretly in love with this woman for years and pining away for her, so then how about don't mindlessly flirt with a servant girl and kiss her on the lips to "make her feel better" in front of your wife. Seriously dude?

And second:
“No!” she screeched. “You will not do this!” She raised her fists high to pummel him. Once again she failed. He caught her wrists and jammed them against her sides. He wedged his weight between her thighs and ground himself against her; Glenda was suddenly certain he did not care that her woman’s flesh was still swollen and tender and healing from the rigors of childbirth. He panted against her throat. “You’re mine—”
“Nay, Simon, she’s mine, and I grow weary of this battle. What say we settle this here and now?”
That voice, coolly imperious…It was Egan! Even as joy bounded high, she wondered how he had delivered himself so silently that neither she nor Simon had heard him.

Your wife is 2 seconds away from. getting. raped. by your enemy and THIS is your reaction? You grow weary of this battle?

His complete lack of urgency & emotions when it came to the woman he supposedly loved from afar for years wasn't really a great selling point. I just didn't understand this guy at all. I was expecting a brooding quiet gruff hero who gets all tender, soft and protective AF whenever he is around the object of his affection. Not this nonsense. It just made everything fall flat. And I'm not even going to touch on the extremely purple prose and heavy handed exclamations! in the dialogue. It made the characters come off more 2 dimensional than anything. So yeah this had all kinds of potential of a yummy angsty story, instead it flopped. Badly.

"His Wicked Promise" is the story of Glena and Egan.

Another beautiful addition to this series.

The book begins with our heroine leaving the McKay clan and going back to her birth home of Blackstone Keep. She is widowed and childless, and has nothing to stay for. The duty to escort falls on our hero, a brave McKay soldier, who has loved the heroine from afar.
Their journey is filled with trials and tribulations, and on arrival they find her Keep on the verge of decay and an enemy crouching for attack. As circumstances worsen, the hero is forced to offer for the heroine and she reluctantly accepts. But with her still in love with her first husband and grieving her child, will she ever fall for the hero?

An angst filled romance of unrequited love with a yearning hero and an oblivious heroine. It was heartbreaking to see the hero break on so many occasions- especially every time the heroine's words or rebuff hurt him. The heroine took her merry time in getting over her past, and trampled on the hero's tender heart one too many times.. However, in the end, she does realize and reciprocate his love, and our wonderful hero finally gets what his heart has always desired.. and more.

Keep your tissues ready- another wonderful add and conclusion to this series! I wish we had a small novella of the kids in love, but I am happy with the small epilogue too.

I had big hopes for this book, but I found there was just too much angst between Egan and Glenda to make the story seem real. Even though they had a child together, both of them were still worrying if the other one really loved them. I can understand this once or even twice in a relationship such as this, but this seemed to be all the story was about.

I know that sex sells and that's why the authors use it, and in some books I have found it adds to the telling of the story. What I hate is when they go into the details over and over. When it's done right, one sex scene is more than enough.

Another thing: what does the title "His Wicked Promise" have to do with the story? I found Egan to be a really nice guy, although I didn't care much for Glenda.

I really adore unequal love! My heart ached for Egan with this one, and I am still looking for stories just like this.. hope someone could refer me a good book.

Maybe the heroine was annoying, yes! but that's why I love this book! I love Egan's patience.. It was all about Egan I was rooting for all throughout and it still doesn't bore me that I have to reread some parts. Egan's dialogue are worth melting for - at least for me.

WARNING: you'll bump into some wtf moments.

This is my first highlander historical romance set in Scotland and I loved it! I love the main characters so much! Their romance was lovely and their was a lot of banter at the same time. The forced proximity and marriage of convenience trope was something I enjoyed in this book!

I LOVED IT!!!

Egan MacBain is Glenda MacKay's dead husbands friend, when her brother-in-law Cameron MacKay asks him to escort her home and see to her safety he readily agrees. On the way there things change and before we know it Egan and Glenda marry for the "noblest of reasons".

But the rugged Highlander is determined to keep his passion hidden while he woos her with his gentle caress and wicked kisses.

I loved the book, couldn't put it down!!

I am a love true love type of gal. Well at least when I am reading a romance novel I am. So I find it difficult to enjoy books about a person losing someone and then moving on with there life and finding someone new. I know that, that happens in reality. But I read silly romance novels to get away from reality. Not be reminded of it.

His Wicked Promise - Ok
James, Samantha - 2nd in McKay series

Rugged Highlander Egan MacBain marries beautiful widow Glenda MacKay as an act of public nobility, but secretly he vows to win her heart as well.

Glenda was annoying and the dialogue only okay.

Glenda decides to return to her home at Blackthorne Keep following her uncle's death as she is now mistress there. She had spent 8 years with the MacKays, first as a bride, then as a widow. Since her brother-in-law, Cameron, cannot accompany her home as he is awaiting the birth of his child, he asks his right hand man, Egan to escort Glenda. Secretly, Egan has been in love with Glenda for years, but has done nothing about it since she was his friend's wife and now widow. For her part, Glenda has not failed to notice how attractive Egan is either.
Turns out that Egan decides to stay with Glenda because it is clear that she needs help at her keep. Someone is attacking her villagers and many are fleeing in fear. She has no defenses and is unable to pay the earl his due. Plus, she has a smarmy neighbor, Simon who is most eager to get into her dress and onto her lands. Egan believes that he is behind the attacks in hopes of pushing Glenda towards Simon for help. Once the earl determines that she is behind on payment and that marauders are terrorizing her people, he insists that she marry soon or he will choose someone himself. When it is clear that Simon intends to press his suit, Egan falsely claims that Glenda had already promised herself to him.
Okay so Glenda is really mad at Egan for this. Why? She has to marry according to the earl. She hates Simon and also believes he is behind the attacks. Every time that he attempts to kiss her, she feels like gagging and taking a bath. Egan, on the other hand, causes her to have butterflies and funny feelings down there (even if she thinks she should not). Also, she knows that he is a trustworthy individual since she has known him for 8 years and both her husband and her brother-in-law trust him. What is the problem?
The two have a lot of chemistry together but both act pretty dumb, with Glenda taking the cake. After 3 years as a widow, she says that she can never love again, which is fine. However, she allows Egan to believe that she can never love him or accept his seed. When meanwhile, it is because she is afraid to love someone again and then lose them. We know that she lost her first husband to a violent death and upon having his head presented to her, she gave birth to a stillborn baby out of shock.
Both of them could have really benefited from talking to each other.

i did not like this as much as His Wicked Ways because i did not like Glenda. I thought she was a nice lady in the first book but in this book, she's just annoying for the first half of the book. it just feels like she's always picking a fight with Egan.

even towards the end of the book, there was still mistrust between the both of them because they did not have communication. egan was always worried that Glenda still loved her dead husband and glenda is unsure whether egan wants the kid or her.

i didn't like it when glenda loses her temper and says horrible things to egan. i mean. he's just the nicest guy ever, trying to always help her (even though he does things sometimes without her permission) but she doesn't see his good intentions.

after she got with child, it mirrored the first book where egan didn't go to her bed anymore and glenda starts worrying about it. that part frustrated me. god's sake. where's the communication? i was just waiting and waiting forever for them to talk about their feelings and it took all the way to the end for them to do it.

the action at the back felt slightly rushed and i liked that this book had an epilogue, a proper end for the 2 books in this series. though this book & series wasn't Samantha James' best, it was still a good series to pass the time.

Oh, I was curious about this one! Loved it how the two of them came together. I understand all Glenda's doubts, but I think it was a bit too long before she relented. Amolst became tiring. But it is understandable that she be afraid of love again. Egan was... Egan. A great man and far more funny than the first book let us see. I miss Meredith and Cameron, but, after all, this was Glenda and Egan's story. Loved to see Brodie. Perhaps we will have a third book, about Brodie and Elizabeth? I truly hope so!!

Another attempt after Goodreads crash
It started out slow but I soon became invested in the H/H. She had a tragic and life altering experience but enough already, the guy adores you. She eventually lost my sympathy and I gave it all to him. I felt his pain. Once she stopped crying and feeling guilty, they became an ok couple with a good epilogue. Several suspenseful storylines which kept me reading.

2nd in the series, Egan seems to suffer unrequited love, but gets his heart's desire, the widow Glenda and her estate. He tortures himself that she still loves her dead husband. So many misunderstandings, not only if each other, but of themselves . There is a villain about, who is not revealed until the very end. Then comedcthe happily ever after.

Maybe if I’d read this before the Perfect Bride trilogy, I might’ve liked it better. The storyline was just okay for me. Egan was too stoic and flat for much of the book to ever get a sense of his personality. Glenda was a bit one-dimensional as well. And their bickering/forced tension grated on me after awhile. Other books by this author are better.

Steamy scenes: 5/5
Dialogue: 2/5
Inner dialogue: 1/5

The characters kept repeating the same thoughts over and over. Obsessing obviously happens in real life, but that's not what I want to read.
I also found it quite triggering of my own pregnancy complications, so I couldn't put it down until I found out what happened.

Normalnya kan, apalagi Egan kan seorang pejuang, meski ditolak, dijauhi sama Glenda mestinya ia keukeuh ngejar2 istrinya itu supaya mau sama dia. Bukannya malah cari penyakit. Udah gitu, mereka kepergok dua kali lagi oleh Glenda. ughhh, makin mendidih aja nih bacanya.

Tapi bagaimana juga, Glenda juga keras kepala banget, siyy. Tapi dibandingkan kegoblogan Egan.

Tapi setidaknya semua masalah terjawab, semua orang senang kecuali si tokokh antagonisnya heheheh

Glenda MacKay has not had an easy life. She moved far from home to live with her husband who was brutally murdered then not a day later she lost the only child she had been able to conceive. After those tragedies she swore she would never marry again. She never wanted to feel the pain she felt after she lost the small family she made.

After years of staying with the MacKay's and making a good life for herself with them, Glenda decided it was time for her to make her way back to her family home. She is the last living member of her family and someone needs to take care of everything.

Once Glenda made her decision she told Cameron, laird of the MacKay's, and he insisted that his right hand man, Egan MacBain, travel with her to keep her safe during the journey.

Egan has been in love with Glenda since the moment she road in to Dunthorpe as the new wife to his MacKay friend. He grieved for her when she lost her husband and babe in the same day but always loved her from afar. Now he has been forced to accompany her on a days long journey back to her home.

When Glenda and Egan arrive to Blackstone Tower they see all is not well. Most of the tenants have been run off by the nightly raids on the land. Glenda tries to get things under control but is told by the earl of the area that she must wed to get things under control.

The man suspected on conducting the raids hopes to be the man she marries but Egan steps in and proclaims he will be the one to marry Glenda. Glenda is then put in the position of being in love with her dead husband and falling in love with her new husband.

I really liked Glenda and Egan. I was hoping they would get together after reading "His Wicked Ways". Glenda was so sad and it was clear that Egan had feelings for her even then.

I did get a little upset with Egan when he didn't understand why she didn't want to get married again, and it had nothing to do with Niall and more to do with the baby she lost. I wished he would have been a little more forgiving in that aspect since it really didn't have anything to do with him.

If I want anything now it's Brodie and Elizabeth's love story. That better happen!

Finished this 10/08/23. I read PB, published in 2000.
2 stars.

Medieval w/ sex scenes. This couple Egan & Glenda
argued constantly & exchanged cruel remarks. They
acted like sex would paper over their animosity &
distrust.

Glenda lived in the Highlands x 8 years & wanted to
return to her castle in the Lowlands. She & Niall were
married for 5 years & he died a violent death. For 3 yrs
afterward she lived w/ Laird of MacKay clan, Cameron
(Niall's bro.) & his wife Meredith. Glenda perseverated
on Niall's memory-enough already! She didn't need
to insult most men in comparison to her late beloved.

Cam selected Egan to escort Glenda to her castle. They
discovered it in ill-repair and her troops fled. And a
band of bad men terrorized the area nr Glenda's castle.

This required suspension of disbelief. The mystery aspect:
too obvious. The love story- felt lacking. Difficult to like
a story where the MCs were unlikeable human beings.
I tried to find their personal strengths. Genuine gratitude
should have been their goal. I'm surprised I finished this.

IMO this author has written more interesting books than
this one.

Cerita nya so so aja, ga terlalu seru walaupun love scene nya seru juga sih... [image error]
Apalagi pas aku tau kalo si Egan ini cowok pengeretan [image error] , biarpun emang sih di ceritain dia cinta nya sama Glenda (widow of his best friend) sudah lama sekali, tetap aja ada kata2 nya yg dia meminta Glenda menikah, dia bilang kan kita sama2 untung, kamu dapat suami, aku dapat tanah (secara dia miskin abis, rumah aja gak punya!)

Mana ada moment2 WTF !... saat Egan main mata dengan pembokat pake acara cium2an peluk2an segala...right after their wedding ! WTF ! [image error]
[image error] [image error] [image error]

Belum mood nulis review lengkap, soalnya masih bete, kesel deh menghabiskan 2 hari buat bacaan yg gak terlalu oke.... [image error]

The story begins with Glenda making the decision to move back to her childhood home and leave her husbands people, to move on. Glenda tragically lost her husband and baby. Moving physically is easier to do than allowing herself to move on emotionally. Glenda tries to deny any feelings between herself and Egan, an adopted member of her husbands family. Egan has loved her since the moment he first met her, eight years ago.

I disliked Glenda for the first half of the book but the second part of the book gets better.
