Mothers care for their babies in all kinds of ways. A mother duck keeps her eggs warm, a mother cat washes her little ones with her warm, gentle tongue, a mother goose chases intruders away from the nest . . . and a human mother lovingly tucks her child in and kisses him good night. The profound connection between mother and child emanates from every word and brush stroke as Carol Carrick's spare, elegant text and her son Paul Carrick's luminous paintings join to create a tender and reassuring picture book.
This is a book about animal mothers... but also human mothers. And I like this book, but... it's the kind of book that when I read it to my son, I remind him that not everyone has a mother. Or they might not have a mother who cares. I mean, when I ask my son how he knows I love him, he replies, "Because you're my mom. Moms love their kids." And we talk about how that's not always a given. And so if we read this book together, we'd talk about how hopefully every child has a someone. A someone who does these things for them... but even that is not a given.
While the illustrations of the human characters needed a bit of work, this is overall, a beautiful book that reminds us that animal mothers love and care for their babies, as well. I was so very happy to see the number of farm animals depicted on the pages--so often we forget that these animals are just as sensitive and emotional as our pets--and they too, care for their young and don't want to be separated from them. This simple book is a touching reminder that we share the world with thinking and feeling beings.
This is a great story for young readers. It talks about many different animals and their relationship with their mothers. I like this book to teach repetition as the story repeats the words "mothers are like that" This book is also great because it talks about the relationship between mothers and their babies.
Such a sweet story! The illustrations are very cute with the mother animals and their babies. Each of them have a mother, and the story tells how they care for their babies. Tells of the bond between a mother and her baby.
This is a great story to read to your children as you snuggle up for bedtime stories. Simple narrative and soft, coloful illustrations of animal mothers and their babies.
This one is perfect for mini-lessons on repeating lines and simple themes. A tender book. It would be fun to have the kids write their own versions for Mother's Day gifts.
