Oakley Island #2

Merritt and Her Childhood Crush

Rate this book
I said I’d never set foot on Oakley Island again. Not so long as HE lives there. But after my life implodes, I’m reconsidering EVERYTHING. Including my reasons for avoiding the first— and only— man I’ve ever loved. I’m a high achiever. Driven. Maybe a little TOO driven. So when my boyfriend confesses to cheating AND steals the promotion I’ve been working toward for years, I do the unthinkable for someone like me. I break. But the timing couldn’t be better for me to fall apart—I can escape to the idyllic Oakley Island and oversee the renovations on my late grandmother’s estate. There’s just one tiny, massive, little problem: no one told me the contractor is the grown up version of the boy I fell in love with years ago. He was my first love. My first kiss. My first heartbreak. Now, I’m faced with seeing Hunter daily. Being his boss. Forging a new dynamic that fits our adult selves. Hunter is bigger. Bearded. Talks in grunts rather than words. And has just as much hold on me as he ever did. Trouble is, Hunter’s life is on Oakley. His daughter is on Oakley. And it was never my plan to stay here permanently.
Do I really want to risk having my heart broken a second time? More importantly, do I want to risk breaking his?

Merritt and Her Childhood Crush is a second chance at childhood first love romantic comedy. The Oakley Island Romcoms follow three very different sisters as they renovate the house they inherited and find love on the island along the way. The stories are standalone, but if you like continuous stories, we recommend reading them in order. Each book is closed door, with sizzling chemistry but no spice.

DNF at 29%. I hate when I purchase a book and cannot finish.

The writing is good and I kinda like a lot of the characters and setting... but what I don't like is the plot. The plot has so many issues that it's making me hate the main characters.

The basic idea is that these two have always been in love... but broke up when she was 15 and he was 16. He still loved her, but finally moved on (I mean, they were teenagers, so moving on makes sense). But, he never loved the woman he moved on to. Ugh! How awful. He basically was more concerned about being in a relationship than who he was in a relationship with! And how can I trust and like him as a hero when he has no core like that!?

Sure, there are plenty of people I know that got married because "that's what you do" and divorced later cause they realized that's not a solid ground for a relationship. Perhaps if this was set in historic times and he needed an heir, it would have made sense for him to move on. But in a contemporary romance, AND WHEN HE WAS STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL, it makes no sense for him to move on... especially for romance book sake. Who wants a romance hero who will love one woman but knock another woman up? I sure don't.

Ten years later, they meet again and immediately all the feelings are there and they are all over each other as if no time has passed. And yet, they haven't seen each other SINCE HIGH SCHOOL! Seriously... each of them have been in serious relationships since then.

The authors could have done a good job with this plot... but screwed the pooch on a wide variety of elements and I am starting to hate everything in this book.

So, I'm stopping now and warning ya'll who care. The more I learn HOW IN LOVE HE WAS WITH MERRITT WHEN HE MARRIED ANOTHER WOMAN, the more I dislike the "hero". Add to that, he named his daughter (WITH THIS WIFE) after his ex-girlfriend WHO HE STILL LOVED! How freaking disrespectful!

Here are my observations...

1. They dated as teenagers and were "in love".
2. They broke up when she was 15 and he was 16 when she told him they didn't have a future because she was determined to move to New York City and he was an "island boy".
3. He waited for her a short time after their fight, but he moved on to "try" with another girl who liked him.
4. She came back to the island when she was 17 to tell him she loved him... but he was already in a relationship with someone else.
5. He got married at age 18 because he got his high school girlfriend pregnant (remember, this is the girl he was "trying" with after the heroine moved away).
6. She was very artsy and chill as a teenager. As an adult, she's uptight and all about being "perfect". I don't understand personality 180s like this!
7. His daughter is named after the heroine (her middle name).
8. He's always loved her and only her.
9. They both act as if they had a meaningful relationship... but it's been 10 YEARS since they dated AS TEENAGERS!

Steam Level: 🔥 (kissing only)
Trigger Warning: brief mentions of teen pregnancy, cheating (side characters), divorce, and death of a loved one

After losing out on a promotion and being cheated on by her boyfriend, Merritt Markham has moved from New York to Oakley Island to help oversee the renovation of her late grandmother's beach house. While the island holds lots of fond memories for Merritt, it's also home to the only man she ever truly loved- Hunter Williams. Since he's the contractor working on the beach house, Merritt must confront their complicated past and her conflicted feelings about Hunter. Will these two be able to clear the air and finally have a real shot at happily ever after?

I enjoyed the romance between Merritt and Hunter from the very start. These two had fun, teasing banter and playful pranks that left a smile on my face. And the kisses and innuendo were so hot! I liked how this book had a bit more of a serious tone from these two authors and dealt with some tough, real-life issues like teen pregnancy, marrying young, and co-parenting after divorce. Even though the details of Hunter and Merritt's relationship as teens were a little vague, I really liked the flashbacks that showed their friendship and growing feelings from the past. I was eager to see how they would handle this second chance at being together. Hunter's rescue animals and his young daughter were sweet side characters that added to the second half of the story, and Frank the barber with a TikTok channel was also a great addition! My only real complaint is that there were a lot of almost miscommunication moments that stressed me out, and there was also a certain painting that gave me weird vibes at the end (the authors have recently made a small change to this part of the book 😍). But otherwise I truly enjoyed this story and am looking forward to Sadie and Ben's story coming next!

(2.5 stars) - Overly drawn out + issues

I normally enjoy relationship development romances & 2nd chance romances - this should have been an easy 4 star at the minimum.

Unfortunately, it was much slower moving than Eloise's story - I got bored, put it aside & couldn't bring myself to pick it up again for weeks. I don't think we needed quite that much time in Merritt's head with side visits into Hunter's version of the same, considering their thoughts were largely on repeat. We definitely needed more going on in the story - an amusing side plot might have helped.

I finally picked it up again, & while it's an ok story overall, it has issues besides the pace.

The fixation on sexiest bachelor & panty melting by the juvenile old women felt forced & almost creepy. I guess if you think Betty White playing a vulgar, foul-mouthed granny was funny, it won't bother you.

While Cassie's dependence on Hunter most definitely needed to be addressed, I hated the secondary characters who told him to turn his back on her while she was in labor. That wasn't the time for it & would have been beyond crappy, esp since he'd already let her expect he would.

I disagree with reviewers who felt that Hunter needed to make a grand gesture - he was already obsessively hung up on Merritt to what would be considered an unhealthy level in real life; she was the one who needed to complete the process of reconciliation with herself AND Hunter. The problem was that the communication issues near the end were too obviously contrived, & the only real conflict to resolve was actually COMMUNICATING with each other. More frustrating than satisfying & it's only the authors' writing talent that saves it from a pan.

*** CONTENT ***
SEX: There's passionate kisses & innuendo, plus the cringeworthy grannies, but nothing graphic

POLITICAL: Frustrating that one or both of the authors felt the need to inject this bit of political correctness into the story -
"(which also served as a reminder of how completely male and white our office is)".
Which is in itself both misandrist & racist!!

I worked with a real life guy like Simon. He got promoted because he was a good poser not because he was male or white. Another guy I knew would leave most of the work for his male white partner (as if a difference in the guy's gender or skin color would have changed that 🙄), but schmoozed so well that he consistently received a higher review than the guy who was doing the real work but didn't talk himself up to the supervisor. The schmoozer ended up in jail, btw. There's plenty more examples, but the most essential point regarding this is that I've seen the exact same kind of garbage from female coworkers willing to get ahead at the expense of others.

So the political stereotyping is as unnecessary as it is unwelcome in escapist entertainment - let's stick with the fact MLK promoted that a person isn't good or bad because of their skin color or sex but because of the content of their character (or lack thereof).

well written fun book with a poor premise

Emma and Jenny are two of my favourite authors in the rom com genre. They're fantastic writers who really know how to make your laugh and cry. It's a well written book. I just hate the premise SO MUCH. I hate the idea of pining after someone when you're married to someone else, of the "I never really loved her" / "it was always you" thing. Marriage isn't about romance, fun - that's dating. Marriage is about love, faithfulness, and family. So I just really struggled with disliking Hunter for a lot of the book, and his whole issue with being overly involved with Cassidy just made it worse. And maybe it was because we just saw flashbacks of them at 15/16 but didn't really see them fall in love, but I couldn't really see why Hunter and Merritt loved each other either. The present day just seemed like a lot of miscommunication and physical attraction , which I'm not a huge fan of as a basis for a relationship. Still looking forward to Sadie's story, though.

“I can’t remember the last time my life felt fun. Or when I felt fun. Sadie is fun. Eloise is fun. Somehow, I’ve turned into the serious one. The responsible one. The least likely to play footsie with a man on a first date. I could get drunk off this feeling, this buzzing, almost reckless excitement.”

Absolutely loved this latest book in the Oakley Island Romcom series! This book really showcases why both Emma St. Clair and Jenny Proctor are such versatile, talented authors. They took Merritt, a somewhat unlikeable character from the first book and made me love her! It’s a second chance, childhood friends to more romcom with those characteristic awkward situations, sizzling romance, and animal encounters these two are known for.

Merritt is a complicated woman. She’s successful, responsible, and tough. But, inside is the teenager who was devastated by her parents’ divorce and having to leave behind the young man who had become her everything. She changed from the carefree spirit who painted and walked the beaches barefoot to a buttoned up, seriously driven career woman. After losing her job and her boyfriend, she returns to Oakley Island to take over supervising the remodel of her grandma’s home. The only problem is that the young man she’s always loved and left behind is the one doing the remodeling.

Hunter is the quiet type who happens to know every Taylor Swift song. He’s a big, burly guy with a beard who seems the complete opposite of Merritt. Divorced with a smart little eight year old daughter, Hunter isn’t looking for love until Merritt returns. With a lot of misunderstandings between them, he’s leery of losing his heart to her again. He was devastated when she left before and can’t bear to have her leave again which he believes is only a matter of time. But, it’s hard to forget a relationship that spanned years. All the harmless pranks and teasing come back easily along with the fiery attraction. Despite the “help” of some rescue animals, the quirky town of Oakley, and his invested parents and daughter, he’s determined to win her heart once and for all.

Loved, loved, loved this slow burn romance. I loved watching Merritt pick up those parts of herself she left behind as a teenager. On Oakley, she’s found herself again and I loved the way Hunter brought out the best in her. The flashbacks were fantastic and really gave a lot of insight into their relationship. Cassidy, the ex wife, poses some unwanted angst throughout the story, but I enjoyed how Hunter finally resolves the situation.

Some of my favorite scenes:

beach scene carry
the first date kiss
the restaurant scene with Hunter’s parents
All the yummy food (seriously think I gained five pounds just reading this)
Banjo the raccoon, Vroom, and the other dogs
Frank the TikTok wonder & Panty Melters Book Club
The paintings

I loved the depth and raw emotion in this romcom and seeing a complicated previous relationship grow into something even better. It’s different than Eloise and the Grump Next Door, but I loved that difference and it completely fit Merritt’s personality. It’s hard to say which one is my favorite because they’re both amazing in their own way. I adore these sisters and enjoy seeing them find love. It’s definitely a must read! Now, I can’t wait for Sadie’s story. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the authors. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

The dynamic sweet but sexy writing duo is back with the newest Oakley Island romance and let me just tell you it is a treat!

Merritt is the serious one, the one with responsibilities, but when her life gets flipped upside down, she takes some time to recoup on Oakley island. Hunter, her old childhood flame might still reside there...and that spark was never totally extinguished...but can they both overcome hurt and adult responsibilities to come together?

This is a book about second chances, and the people who come into our lives and leave an impression so deep, that nothing can remove the mark they've made. I loved the push and pull...the will they wont they in this sweet island romance that is full of angst. There aren't many games played and I think as adults both characters are fairly straight forward and that was refreshing to see!

"I used to tell her that, how she reminded me of the sea -- wild and vibrant and beautiful."

You can expect:

- southern island setting
-overlapping timeline but not plot from book 1
- animal rescue home
- single dad
- renovation humor
- unconventional pets
- second chance romance
- sexy but still sweet

Looking forward to Sadies romance to see how it all wraps up! Thank you Jenny and Emma for my copy, this review is totally my own.

I only recently found Emma St. Clair and I fell in love with her rom-coms. I haven’t read anything from Jenny Procter yet so I was so excited to head to Oakley Island and be part of the world they created together. This second chance romance definitely delivers. I loved it so much!

Merritt and Hunter dated in their teen years as they spent their summers together on Oakley Island. One summer Merritt tells Hunter she will not return. They had dreamed of a future together on the island but she decides it is too small for her and heads to NYC to build her life. Merrit runs into Hunter again, years later, when she returns to the island after her grandmother’s death. She returns to handle renovations on her estate. Once she gets there she finds out that Hunter is the one doing the renovations.

I fell in love with both Hunter and Merritt right away. They literally jump off the pages at you so it would be hard not to. I also really enjoy the dual point of view as we go back and forth between chapters to get an inside of what Hunter and Merritt are thinking as they reconnect. We are treated to flashbacks from their teen years which I also enjoyed. It was fun to get a glimpse of Merritt’s younger carefree self and watch her find that part of her again.

I need to mention that I adored Hunter's pets. The dogs and Banjo the raccoon. They were all so much fun. It was amazing how Emma and Jenny created such individual personalities for them. Banjo is such a character! He was the absolute best! If you are an animal lover like me you will really enjoy these guys.

Ok, I could go on and on because there was so much to love about this one including some incredible swoony kisses, Hunter's adorable 8 year old daughter, and all the small town vibes, but I am going to leave it right here and let you read it. You definitely need to! It is fun and full of heart and emotions.

This is the second book in the series and it can stand alone. Although I will be going back to read Eloise's story and I am super excited to read Sadie’s in the next book!

First of all a huge thank you to @jennyproctorbooks and @kikimojo for the advanced digital copy AND a physical copy!! This cover is delicious!! 💖💖 And thank you, Jenny, for allowing me to be a part of your ARC team! 💖 All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is the second book written by Jenny and Emma and the second in the 𝗢𝗮𝗸𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗥𝗼𝗺𝗰𝗼𝗺 series. I highly encourage you to read the first one before this one, although it can be read by itself. I said this in my review of the first book, but this writing duo is magic! It’s seamless, so so sweet and I am here for it!!

This is a second chance romance which is not usually my favorite trope. I read several popular second chance romance books last year and they were definitely not for me. It was too focused on the teenage years and I am not a YA fan. A lot of second chance romances (when the couple was in love as teenagers) often have some crazy falling out that leads to the breakup. 😝 This one does not and it was sooo refreshing!! There are some very brief flashbacks to when they were teenagers, but other than that the book is focused upon the present.

Merritt:
She was not very likable in the glimpses we got of her in the first book. It was so nice to watch her find herself again in this book and also rekindle her relationship with her sisters.

Hunter: Swoon! 🥰
•wild animal rescuer
•loves Taylor Swift music
•single dad
•contractor
•woodworker

This book was a little more serious than I was expecting, but it was such a beautiful story about second chances and finding yourself again. Pick this one up!! 💖

DEEPLY LOVED.

This feels exactly like that the type of books I have come to expect (and love) from these authors. BUT this one also had this extra layer of deep that really resonated with the story and the character dynamics. Merritt and Hunter are both in lower places than they expected when they meet again and that takes time to crawl out of and see the future before them.

There’s definitely still some comedic antics that had me smiling and chuckling along. Though I keep turning back to all of the meaningful conversations that were brought to the table. I loooove that both of them worked hard on trying to communicate with each other. There’s past grievances, many questions, and a sense of will they stay? that bring out the feels as the pages go by.

Merritt was a fantastic FMC and very much relatable to my modus operandi. The oldest child seeking constant perfection and an escape from her parent’s divorce. WOW THAT HITS. Slowly and surely she connects back with her true self and acknowledges that she can be a combination of all the Merritt’s she’s tried to be and I LOVE THAT. + the addition of a super swoony Hunter who is short on words and big on trying. He makes mistakes too and finding that I need to set boundaries moment was critical to the story.

I loved this story and could continue gushing about it. It was everything I hoped for and my excitement for book three is off the charts.

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Romance
- Language: very little
- Romance: make-outs
- Violence: low
- Trigger/Content Warnings: mentions of childbirth, divorce, loss of a grandparent, cheating (recounted – NOT between main couple)

Awe! Sweet, broken Merritt. Sweet, broken Hunter. I LOVE YOU BOTH!

I just loved this story in all of its glory! I loved the “second chance romance” that was really a “second chance with their first love”. It added a new element to the story with all their shared pasts, and hurts, and realizing that while they *were* young and their love changed it was still always TRUE!

I was smiling like a loon the whole time I was reading! This story was just…sweet! (And deliciously swoony!)

Hunter & Merritt grew up a lot in the years they were apart, but I loved that they so easily fell into being *themselves* with each other again! There was a lot of pain from both parties, but I feel like they handled it like adults with good conversations and the realization that they were kids. And they worked to heal TOGETHER!!

It did take me a few days to really get into the story, but that could’ve been the format I was reading originally. Once I flipped to paperback I FLEW through the last 50%!

I just love Oakley Island, and all of its residents and can’t wait to be back! I cannot begin to explain how excited I am for Sadie’s story!

Emma & Jenny are FABULOUS together! They write so much more than just “fluffy romcoms”. (But they do the fluffy part well too!)

Extra little thought:
I did read both versions of the ending, and I can honestly say that I loved the OG one more! (They were both great, and I love that they rewrote it to make sure it didn’t bother anyone) But the OG felt more true to the characters throughout the story!

3.5 stars!! I really loved so much about this book! It’s beautiful to see how the small town plays such a fun roll in the book and the coparenting dynamic is so well written. And characters recognizing the need for boundaries is a great detail to have and read about. I appreciated so much in reading this book and can’t wait for the next in the series!

It was so much fun being back on Oakley Island and finally getting Merritt and Hunter’s story. Both of our MCs were tough nuts to crack in book 1. Merritt didn’t come off very likable and Hunter was just the quiet contractor. I really loved getting to know both of them! While both character’s has great arcs, Merritt’s was my favorite! The flashbacks really helped me to get a sense of who she truly was under her tough businesswoman exterior. That she was really a free spirit underneath it all was such a nice surprise and I really enjoyed that she became this person again as the story progressed — embracing the island and the artist inside her.

Hunter was just a good guy through and through — a loyal father and friend. Sometimes his loyalty went a little too far and this created some angst within the story. I’m so glad he was able to work through this with Merritt. Their interactions just got better every time and left me breathless. From Hunter carrying Merritt over his shoulder off the beach to him showing Mer his workshop (IYKYK)…I kept craving their times together more and more. I also loved the easy way Merritt and Isabelle became close. The grand gesture at the end was the icing on the cake. I am just dying for Sadie and Ben’s story!!

More things I loved:
•Banjo and Vroom and the whole rescue gang
•Shake It Off
•tomato sammies and pimento cheese for Hunter
•”I’ve got you.”
•Panty Melters book club
•a new penny
•”Mer means the sea.”
•“You don’t know what you do to me. Your words. Your touch. The way you look at me.”

Thank you to the authors for an advanced copy. My thoughts are my own!

This is a sweet story of second chances and unrequited love. After her grandmother died, Merritt must return to Oakley Island to watch over the renovations of her grandmother's home. The contractor just happens to be her childhood crush that she left at fifteen. Years later, she finds herself jobless and alone back in Oakley where memories surface and love rekindles.

This book has fun banter in the beginning, sweet single dad scenes and swoony romance. Unlike the first book, this story gets more serious as we navigate the back and forth feelings between the main characters. Hunter is kind and has a soft heart while Merritt is bright and full of life ( at least here on the island).

Overall this is a perfect read for sweet romance lovers. I had some issues with story arc. There were a lot of " he loves me loves me not" and vice versa. I found it repetitive. Most of this book felt more of "inner thoughts" rather than action. I needed more things to happen and I'm not talking about kisses. Those were just fine😍

I wanted relationship growth here and now not picking up where they left off, especially since it has been years since they have been with each other. They are different people now.

Always a fan of single dad and second chance. I just needed more. Loved the sisters in this. So I'm stoked for Sadie's book. That one scene with her and Ben was fabulous🤣

Curious what you think. Message me.

To be honest, I didn’t like this. Maybe because of the idea that Hunter married and had a child, while naming his child after his first love. Even tho he got divorced, it’s just felt not romantic for a second chance. But I also needed, or wanted Merritt to be stronger than falling for him again after he broke her heart. This isn’t for me, a type of read. Like couldn’t Merritt fall for another guy in town? Wouldn’t that be normal? This book just made me question love life.

I loved this! Super sweet 2nd chance romance with a single dad!
I feel like their relationship was super realistic, all of their struggles seemed to be things they would have to work out in a relationship like theirs which was nice. Sometimes relationships in romance books can be shown to be unrealistic.

Y’all know with my two favorite tropes being second chance and single parent romance, I was so excited for this one. Merritt is Eloise’s older sister from the first book who we’ve seen before. She’s the organized, maybe a little cold, business woman. But before that she was just Merritt, the carefree girl who loved to paint and spent her summer on Oakley Island with Hunter.
But after some unfortunate events, she leaves and doesn’t come back.
Fast forward almost ten years and one of the sisters has to monitor their grandmother’s Bed and Breakfast renovation. Eloise is out (this overlaps with the first book and takes place during the conflict in the first book)
Merritt’s big city life has fallen apart, she’s back in the town where her and Hunter broke each others hearts, and he now has an 8 year old daughter. Did I mention he’s the one renovating their grandmothers Bed and Breakfast? Lots of time spent together and fun antics.

This was such a sweet story. I loved Merritt and Hunter (and Isabelle of course!) But Banjo might just be my favorite character! From the glimpses we got in the first book I just knew how much I’d love Hunter and Merritt in their own book and I did. They absolutely deserved their happily ever after. And I’m even more excited for the next Oakley Island book. Sadie’s a firecracker and I’ve been wanting to see more of Benedict since book 1.

Tropes and things:

Second chance
Single parent
Forced proximity
Small town
Mischievous rescue animals
A senior TikToker
Sister relationship

Lately I’ve been reading some books that have really wrenched my heart with a rollercoaster of emotions. This book however was refreshing to read. It had a light heartedness and humor about it that made it a great reading escape. There is some light drama but no ridiculous immature overreactions that makes you want to slap some sense into a character.

I liked Merritt a lot. Although reluctant to face her history on the island with Hunter, missing her Grandmother, and aftermath of her parents divorce, she ends up embracing the change in her life. I loved loved the ending on this one. Very happy ending IMO. I loved how three sister got closer as well.

Hunter was the onion of the story. He had so many layers, so many hats he wore and lots of things going on trying to be helpful to others. He made some stupid mistakes that made me what to cry out in annoyance (and then bop his head) but he got sweeter over time and learned from his mistakes. I loved how he decorated his house!

I look forward to reading the next one!!!

This is the second book in the series, and didn’t disappoint! This depicts a second chance romance on the island of Oakley between Merritt and Hunter (Lo’s older sister from the first book).

Hunter is still working on Merritt’s grandmothers house as a contractor, while Merritt conveniently lives there. She was a corporate girly in nyc and recently quit her job, broke up with her bf, and moved to Oakley for a fresh start. Until she realized Hunter was there…

Forced proximity. Second chance romance. Single parent. Childhood lovers.

Thank you for the ARC!

Absolutely loved this story! Merritt and Hunter had all the sparks and chemistry and I loved watching them find their way back to each other! We got to meet them both in the first book and I just knew I was going to adore their love story-and I was right! And in addition to all the toe-curling romance we also got plenty of humor sprinkled in and all the small town charm of the island of Oakley!
Already can’t wait for book three!

"I'm only going to need a little nudge to fall back in love with him. If I even fell out of love to begin with. Meeting his deep brown eyes from across the room, I'm not so sure I ever did."

You guys, I don't know if I have ever loved a second chance romance as much as I did with this one. Jenny Proctor and Emma St. Clair crushed it with this one. Just as I thought they would after reading Eloise and the Grump Next Door.

Merritt and Hunter have history, heartbreak and years of no communication to make up for and Oakley Island is the perfect place for them to figure it all out. Loved the Oakley Island community in book two as much as I did in book one. I especially loved Hunter's mom, her subtle comments, the not so subtle ones and her flat out telling her son what he is doing wrong comments. Great side character rooting for the HEA ending! And the grumpy Jake snippets we get! Great side characters as I said.

And the couple of the hour, Merritt and Hunter themselves. LOVE them individually and as a couple. Character development is strong in this book and I loved every minute of it. I felt like Merritt's character was speaking to my soul at parts as she was becoming her true self. Love her character and what she goes through to get where she is at with the end of the book. You can't help but wish you could be her bff. And Hunter, well, I'll let you discover just how great he is, and how he has his own load of things to work through. Especially when it comes to ex's and all that. Got me riled up thats for sure. He does love deeply though, so go read it, right now!

Seriously, if you love deep talks with complicated circumstances, years of emotion build up, flashbacks, banter, adorable kiddo interference, hilarious and loving community, sweet romance and swoony kisses then this is a book you have GOT to read.

Love these Markham sisters and can't wait to get that last installment in this wonderful romcom series! This writing duo has me hooked.

Thank you @kikimojo and @jennyproctorbooks for the arc of one of my most anticipated reads this year!

Here’s what I loved about this book:
• second chance romance
• angst
• steamy (but not spicy) kisses
• childhood friends to lovers
• the perfect blend of emotion,
heart, and humor

Merritt and Hunter are utter perfection and I will not be shutting up about their story anytime soon. I love how deeply I felt their connection and love for each other. They each really put in the work to be together again and it made their love so beautiful.

2.75⭐️

I can’t tell you how much I wish Oakley Island was a real place… or how much I wish I could follow Frank’s TikTok… OR how much I wish I could meet Banjo the raccoon and Vroom!!! 😍
Ugh!!! The only downside of fiction is that…
It’s FICTION! 😩

Anyway… back to the actual review. 🤪

I LOVED THIS!!!
I even loved it more than Eloise! 🫢 I didn’t know if Merritt would be my cup of tea just from the glimpses of her in Eloise’s book. But, I actually found myself relating to her quite a bit.
She fell apart, removed her mask, put herself back together, and finally let her true self shine again and it was beautiful to see.

And of course I looooooooved Hunter!!!
He was so loyal and sweet and tender-hearted!
He was also SO WEAK for Merritt, and we love to see it. 😏😉
I loved how attune to Merritt he was. He knew her so well and recognized when her brain was spiraling. I loved the moments he just reminded her that he had her or to breathe. 🥹🥰

I have to give a little shout out to Isabelle too! She was HILARIOUS! 🤣 I loved her!!!

I loved seeing the little flashbacks of Hunter and Merritt when they were younger.
The past hurts and feelings with the present tension and chemistry between them were a great combo.
I also have to say I adored how open and honest they were with each other. They communicated so well and were understanding. I always find that so refreshing! 🥰

Like I mentioned in the beginning… I just love Oakley Island! The animals, the people, the beach… *sigh*
I’m going to be sad when this series is over.
I CANNOT WAIT FOR SADIE’S BOOK!!!
The little glimpses of Sadie and Benedict in this book had me absolutely feral for it. 🤩😍🫠
It’s gonna be good.
Maybe after that we could get a book for Naomi? Just something to ponder… 🤔😉

Thank you so so much Emma and Jenny for the eARC!!! (All thoughts and opinions are my own and genuine.)
And I’m extremely sorry for how long it has taken for me to get this review out! 🙈😬

Extra Things I Loved:
Banjo! 🦝
All the dogs but especially Vroom!!!🦽
Merritt drunk dialing Hunter 🤭
Sadie!
The flashbacks
Everything with “the tile”
Dante!
Hunter being a Swiftie! 💗
Frank’s TikToks
Art supplies 🥹
Naomi!
Hunter’s parents 🤣🤣🤣
Mrs. Hopkins and the Panty Melters Book Club 🤣
The texting!
The workshop scene 😮‍💨
Isabelle 🫶🏻
The tomato seed wish… 🍅
Shirtless log chopping 😏🪵

I admit that after I read the first book in this series I wasn't really looking forward to Merritt's story. She came off pretty unlikeable but Emma St. Clair does a great job revealing the complexities to Merritt's backstory. A fun read and I'm looking forward to the next one.
