Jack Mack

Jumping Jack

Rate this book
Young Jack McFee’s prowess as a jump ship pilot has earned him the nickname Jumping Jack. He is only the second person to leap through the Wall, the great cloud of dust and gas bordering Scotian space. Jack would as soon continue patrolling deep space with his almost-too-smart ship’s AI, but he won’t be permitted. A drawn-out war that is not going well, attempts on his powerful grandfather’s life, and the duty of protecting a princess—whom he rather likes—draw him back into action in JUMPING JACK, the second Jack Mack science fiction novel by Oliver Davis Pike

A writer of light-hearted science fiction adventures. That would be Oliver Davis Pike—or at least that would describe the author of his books. That writer is a fiction in himself, a pen name.

The usual disclaimer: I was involved in the editing and publishing of this science fiction novel.

'Jumping Jack' is the second Jack Mack book, the sequel to 'Among the Man Worlds,' as every bit as good as, if not better than, the first. This is light-hearted adventure, with young Jack McFee still the somewhat unwilling hero being thrust into action. Along with his AI ship 'M', of course. There is just enough tech and 'future history' to get SF fans' interest but not to bog us down.

And there is romance, or at least sex. Nothing graphic, so it's not 'adult' material. Sorting all that out is as important to Jack as his role in the war (which is winding down—that's a fairly important subplot). All in all, an entertaining and highly recommended read.

Jack Mack is back! And being pursued, as before, by both villains and amorous women. Older women—they seem to be attracted to him. His family returns as well, his famous and heroic brother and cousin, his reclusive and fabulously wealthy grandfather. The protective 'House,' the AI that runs the family home. General Freneau, with an expended role as Jack's mentor. More Thulean girls! And of course, 'M,' his sentient ship.

The book seems to close a phase of Jack's career that began in "Among the Many Worlds." The war is ending and he is considering where peacetime will take him. I suppose we'll find out in a sequel—I suspect there will be spying involved, however. A good read and recommended.

If you liked 'Among the Many Worlds,' you may like 'Jumping Jack' even more. It's in much the same vein but we do get to learn more about both Jack and his world. I'll admit, I'd like to explore it further.

There is no non-stop action here. There might not really be even that much of a plot, that is, not a central one; rather, we have a number of interweaving subplots to take young McFee's attention. Espionage, combat, politics, romance all have their roles. Jack himself is the same slightly smartalecky sort but he has matured some too. I recommend JJ and look forward to more Jack Mack adventures.

Being the author of this, the second of my Jack Mack science fiction novels, I am inclined to give it the highest of ratings. Oh, what the heck, I think I will!

It was fun for me to get back to the adventures of young Jack McFee, pilot, scholar, spy. I see Jack as sort of a cross between James Bond and Tom Jones, but brighter and quicker with a quip than either. Here, I get him involved in kidnapping, espionage, and (of course) love affairs. I hope the readers enjoy reading the story as much as I did writing it. And there are more adventures to come.
