Not as bogged down with the minutia of a single expedition's day to day lives as some of these histories are, Daniel Francis' Arctic Chase is exactly what it purports to be, a broad history of whaling under some of the most extreme conditions on earth. Industrial whaling was and is a terrible thing, but there can be no denying the ingenuity and the grit necessary to pull it off.
Francis brings all of this to life in a compact volume, complete with some truly stunning photography from the turn of the century and artwork from well before then. Detailed, but not overwhelming, Arctic Chase is an excellent resource for those researching the great white north and the men who sailed it.
