This is the first time I've read a "for Dummies" book. I kind of figured it would be like this: bland writing, lots of repetition, and lots of sections for dummies ("how to create a Facebook profile" - errr, okay.)
Most of the info here could more easily be discovered and learned on Facebook itself. The interesting bits are unfortunately buried beneath boredom.
It's somewhat outdated; three years is a long time in the internet age. Hopefully I'll be able to put some of it into practice, because I did learn a few things.
I can't say this book was a really helpful read. Most of the advice provided is more or less known by people who use Facebook regularly. I guess the fact that it's a For Dummies book makes it more of a beginner's guide and I just have too many expectations.
This tells how to run a business from a Facebook page which I am trying to do now. I can't say I understood a great deal in here but one fact did come though, "This sure is going to cost a lot of money but will I sell????"
As with most Dummies guides, this one is well-done, and spends at least as much time on the whys of Facebook marketing as the how-tos. That dedication to offering a firm grounding in the very basics of marketing is what manages to keep it relevant, despite the fact that (less than a year after publication) a good deal of its FB pointers are obsolete due to the rollout of a little thing called Timeline. I'll admit I started to fade out by the end, but overall it was concise and well-written, and it would be worth hunting down the updated edition as soon as Wiley manages to crank one out.
Like any Dummies book it takes you from the very start of knowledge and builds quickly until you are approaching an expert level. The wealth of links and further suggested reading and research alone makes this worthwhile.
Read worthy. Wish I had read it a year ago when I was learning to use FB for business and writer platform development. This book is a time saver and even though some things have changed since the publication, it's still full of valuable info
Some of it was helpful in making sure I had things set up right. It let me know about a few tools, but overall, I did a lot of skim reading because I feel like this is much more applicable to a large business that's already well established, not the kind of page I was going for.
