Keeping Promises

Rate this book
The story of a girl who loved a boy, who loved her back.

Jason and Kamry met in the second grade. They were best friends who did everything together, so it was inevitable that they fell in love. And in any other lifetime, they would have stayed together forever - but that's not how their story went.

At least, it didn't the first time around.

This is their love story from beginning to end to beginning again - because some promises are too important to not keep.

C. M. Lockhart (also known as Chelsea) is a Black writer of fantasy because she loves creating worlds, exploring relationships, and writing stories about Black girls who aren't all that nice. She is the founder of Written in Melanin LLC — which encompasses a weekly podcast and YouTube channel of the same name — and the Melanin Library, an online database of books written by Black authors.

She is also a lover of video games and anime, so whenever she isn't reading and writing — or talking about reading and writing — she's watching anime, playing her Switch, and dreaming about the day her books get animated.

"There was a compassion inside of me that died – forgiveness was not something I was familiar with anymore – and I damn sure didn’t have any patience left to entertain a boy and his childish games."

"I treated her as indestructible only to cry over her with regret after she was broken."

I loved this book! I read all of this author's books this year and was impressed by her ability to write both romance and fantasy genres with equal ease.

The story revolves around Kamry and Jason, who were childhood sweethearts. However, as they grew up, Jason broke Kamry's heart, leaving her shattered. What I found interesting was that both characters take accountability for their mistakes that led to the pain and heartbreak between them. Overall, it was an outstanding read that I'd highly recommend to others. If the author wanted to write 400-500 pages for Kamry and Jason, I'd read it.

I enjoyed the pacing and structure of the story of Jason and Kamry. Seeing the perspectives of then to now, it was paced well! I didn't blame Kamry when it comes to Jason's trust, because he made a LOT of bad mistakes. However, this was a short and very enjoyable read. I love the way C.M. Lockhart writes, truly.
