As a thought leader, industry expert or business professional, you are driven to make the biggest possible impact in your field.
But before you ca n reach an audience, you must earn their trust.
Unfortunately, far too many leaders rely on their corporate brand to connect with their target audience, an outdated approach that no longer works with trust in institutions at an all-time low.
The good news for leaders who understand this new reality is that although your target audience may hesitate to connect with your corporate brand, they are actively looking to connect with YOU - if you can create an Authority Advantage by positioning yourself as a mission-driven thought leader with something to teach, rather than a professional with something to sell.

Listened to an advanced copy of the audio version for NetGalley. I thought this would be more about leadership within an organization but it’s actually more about how an organization can be a leader within the market. I still found it very interesting and feel like this could be beneficial for entrepreneurs and even those within the marketing field.

This book has some great points about how to go from a servant leader mindset to growing yourself as an authority in your space. I definitely see how being seen as an authority (and making that a key part of your business development strategy) will benefit any business leader long-term. Tl;dr: everyone needs a podcast and everyone needs to pay attention to their online presence. (Several other good nuggets in there, but... for once I actually agree with the podcast logic.)
I think the main limitation of the book is that it feels like it's aimed at a very specific kind of career - for example, in the discussion of how to leverage social media, the authors focused HARD on LinkedIn. (I learned more about LinkedIn than I ever wanted to know.) However, LinkedIn isn't a viable tool in all industries or even in certain types of roles within the same industry. I'm also docking points because the writing itself was full of filler and got very repetitive. There would be a key takeaway or two from each chapter, surrounded by pages of unnecessary filler that did not always help illustrate or expand on the point being made.

The top thought from the book for me personally is if you are not building your brand, it doesn't meant your brand is not there, you don't control it simply. This is pretty powerful. All of us have personal brand or how others perceive us and this is a part of our authority and how the world sees us. Being in control and proactive in creating you and how people around you perceive you, think of you and respect you is vitally important in today's worlds both physical and digital. Very interesting book on how to build an authority that is authentic and will be there to serve you.
I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for my honest opinion. Thank you!

You would have to hire a marketing manager or work your normal job during the day and write in the evening. If you want a work life balance this isn't going to work for most people. Great for people who only focus in life is work and making it big. There were good ideas that I can apply to social media.
