A masterpiece!A Child’s Rule of Life is written in verse as an excellent Catholic guide for children. Each page is printed in two colors and fully illustrated. A beautiful but sturdy book that children and parents will treasure for generations.
Mrsgr. Robert Hugh Benson AFSC KC*SG KGCHS was an English Catholic priest and writer. First an Anglican pastor, he was received into the Catholic Church in 1903 and ordained therein the next year. He was also a prolific writer of fiction, writing the notable dystopian novel Lord of the World, as well as Come Rack! Come Rope!.
His output encompassed historical, horror and science fiction, contemporary fiction, children's stories, plays, apologetics, devotional works and articles. He continued his writing career at the same time as he progressed through the hierarchy to become a Chamberlain to Pope Pius X in 1911, and gain the title of Monsignor before his death a few years later.
One of those sweet, old-fashioned books which would be a delight to share especially with young grandchildren. Some today might find objectionable concepts here, such as ‘punishment’. Does God ‘punish’ us? Many do not believe in punishment anymore. If that is you, and you want your children to grow up thinking there is no such thing, you had best avoid this book.
Msgr. Benson, however, knows, ‘For whom the Lord loves, he disciplines; he scourges every son he acknowledges.’ -Heb 12:6 and ‘Whoever spares the rod hates the child, but whoever loves will apply discipline.’ Prov. 13:24
I happen to be of the old school and firmly believe in those un-PC, but Scriptural ideas such as discipline and appropriate punishment, aimed at loving teaching for correcting misbehavior, never punishment for its own sake, nor, Heaven-forbid, abuse.
When I transgress the laws of my God, I pray He correct me as lovingly and as soon as possible, so why should I not do the same for those in my care? This sort of thinking I tried to pass on to my children and find expressed beautifully in this gentle book. God willing, I have grandchildren, I would love to share it with them.
The sketches by Gabriel Pippet softly supplement the awkwardly-sweet rhymes by Benson. Little ones could use this as a stand-alone picture book, gaining much on their own, but even more by sharing with a wise and loving elder.
Highly recommended!
PS I read this when my own children were younger and liked it then, but I know I appreciate MUCH more now from the vantage of more years.
