Willi Fährmann (* December 18, 1929 in Duisburg; † May 25, 2017 in Xanten) was a German author of children's and young adult books. His best-known books include the novels The Year of the Wolves (1962), Kristina, Don't Forget (1974), The Long Road of Lukas B. (1980), and A Time to Hate, a Time to Love (1985), which are part of the Bienmann saga.
I fell into the trap of thinking this was going to be anything like the "By Way of the Stars" series, since that was supposedly based on this book. It's an extremely free adaptation, which would have been fine if the book was great, but IDK... between the 50% ship voyage, 30% treatise on carpentry in the late 19th century, and 20% preaching thinly disguised as dialogue, I kind of lost interest halfway through. Also the "historically accurate" racism was pretty hard to swallow and the POC characters so stereotypical it made me cringe a lot.
Great book to get a feeling for the time when industrialisation went on. Everything is described very detailed, but for me it was a little strange that the protagonist often just was named “der Junge”, which felt like we should keep ourselves in distance from the main character. I also think there were a lot of themes in this one book. This made it hard for the author and for the readers to really focus on thing. The author writes about industrialisation, slavery, the “new world”, the conflict between old and young, liberalisation, war, a lost father and and and. Nevertheless it was a precious book for me to read.
