Angel of Death is a steamy romantic suspense with extra angst, sexual tension, and morally gray protagonists. It is book one of a two-book series and can be read as a standalone with a happily ever after.
Warning: The story contains explicit sexual content and language, violence, death, and other topics that may be sensitive to readers. Please refer to the book for the full list of trigger warnings. Reader discretion is advised.
Sylan writes steamy romantic suspense and romcom that centers on Asian characters. After an emotional tale, she likes to take a break with a light-hearted romance. The balance is necessary for her creative outlet.
She loves her heroines strong and intelligent, her heroes kind and protective, and both charming and substantive. Outside of writing, she is a software engineer who also enjoys archery, music, traveling, and discovering new food and culture.
Angel of Death is a romantic suspense featuring Serin, the daughter of a crooked politician, and the man she hires to protect her from her father, Lee. Lee, known as the Angel of Death, specializes in hits - he gets in, he gets out, and he never gets caught. Something about Serin tempts him to offer his services as a bodyguard and the two, predictably, fall in love.
I loved so much about this! I was in the mood for some action and some romance and this was a perfect mix. I finished it in a single plane ride. The reason I'm giving this 4 stars and not 5 is that the MMC makes a decision in the final 100 pages of the book to FOR A YEAR and they get over that real quick. I would be beyond pissed if a partner did that to me and we would be having a hell of a conversation before moving forward.
Thanks so much to Sylan Young and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-Op for this ARC. Angel of Death will be out May 26th!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. For me, this book was a mixture of good and bad. I liked the beginning and ending, but the middle was very boring. I had to stop the book and go back to it. 🔪🔪 Things I didn't like; 1. Serin and Lee didn't act their ages. Most times, it felt like I was reading a YA book 2. Serin really annoyed me with her childish and immature attitude. 3. I'd have wanted a detailed portrayal of Senator Cha and his goons 🔪🔪 Things I liked; 1. The romance and chemistry between Serin and Lee was epic! I really loved the quotes from Lee, they were so cute! 2. I liked the side characters; Dami, Daeshim and Rake. They were an amazing support group 3. I liked that the perps after Serin got the ending they deserved 🔪🔪 I'd have liked this book more if the characters were more mature and there was a detailed description of the characters
Thanks NetGalley and Sylan Young for the ARC. As always, this is an honest review.
This was a solid 3 stars read.
Tropes:
❤️ grumpy/sunshine ❤️ political scheming ❤️ on the run ❤️ found family
This is a quick romance/action read with an interesting enough plot. Lee aka the Angel of Death is well developed and likable. Though, the last bit throws his character (and the relationship with Serin, the FMC) back to the ancient times. Whilst understandable, I didn't like the third act conflict was handled way too quickly, considering the gravity of the situation.
Serin was likable, even if I found her a little less believable. It was told in the beginning she was involved in all of her father's dark business and yet, that edge was mostly missing from her.
The found family line was cute even if I found Tucker Rake (who looks exactly like Chris Hemsworth and is a former army ranger) slightly over the top with the Tyler Rake similarities.
The writing style itself dragged in the beginning. There was a lot of telling instead of showing. The use of onomatopoeic words made it a bit difficult to take things seriously. However, the love story between Lee and Serin was lovely and well developed. All in all, this is still a promising debut.
A woman in danger seeks the Angel of Death for protection. Desperate to run away after obtaining dangerous information about influenced people, Serin lies about her name and asks a mercenary to keep her safe.
The Angel of Death is a killer, not a protector. However, when this woman asks him to keep her safe, he finds himself dodging bullets to protect her. Her father is corrupt and powerful. On the run and fighting their feelings for each other, things get out of hand, but will they survive?
This book is filled with action, suspense and romance. It’s the first book of a duet, but the story can be read alone. There’s angst and steam in this gripping romance. It also has a few triggering subjects, so read the trigger warning carefully before jumping into the story. There are some typos throughout the book.
She asked him to protect her. He was doing his job and keeping her safe, but she made a wrong decision and put herself in danger. There were some parts of the plot that seemed outlandish and unconvincing. Some of Lee’s actions as an experienced ex-military made him seem like a novice. It made the story slow and plotted in a clunky manner.
Their romance was sweet, and they both got to know each other better as they tried to stay alive while chasing information. However, despite these flaws, the story was still enjoyable and the action scenes were thrilling. The characters were likeable, and the story was engaging. Overall, it was a fun, action-packed book.
Abuse, violence and steamy scenes will keep you hooked on this gripping, suspenseful romance.

Scenes of passion but also tenderness; thrilling, scary, full of revelations and retribution Get a box of tissues and keep another in reserve! What can I say about this book? The phone rang while I was reading and I nearly threw my tablet across the room. This book had a very strong start and kept me on the edge of my seat for most of it. I haven’t read a recent book that has been this steamy, tender, scary and thrilling all at the same time. This is a book to read for yourself to see what all the fuss is about. If you like any of what I have said, this is a must-read. In the prologue the 38yo Angel of Death is rescuing Serin from her abductors. Then we shift to six months earlier to see how that came to be. Thirty-four-year-old Serin gives her name to Lee as Yujin for her protection and probably his as well. She needs sanctuary until she can expose her powerful father for the despicable man he is. Along the way, she gives Lee a glimpse of a future he thought impossible before her. However, there will be complications, wherein lies the need for tissues. Remarkably beautiful, complicated story of love, loss and second chances. One of my favorite quotes: “Lee and Serin’s love story was much like the coming together of two shattered souls finding their broken pieces with each other. It was so raw, so beautiful.” And may I also say that quote is descriptive of the writing in general. I adored this book. I volunteered to read an ARC of it through BookSirens and I would give it more than five stars if I could.
Angel of Death is an exciting novel with a beautiful backdrop. I felt so immersed in the culture Sylan Young offered, and I think that was my favorite part of the novel.
I like the main characters. I wish I could say I love them, but I think they needed a bit more fleshing out to feel fully human and relatable. Both had very relatable attributes but were not delved into deeply enough to make me feel attached. They had a bit of insta-love, especially on Serin’s side, which I found less exciting after the hardened life she’s meant to have lived. I wish the romance aspect of the story took longer (the falling stage only really comprised about a quarter of the novel) because I felt the book was advertised as a romance, rather than an action story with a love subplot.
2.5/5 ⭐️, rounded up 4/5 🌶️ level - not too graphic, but there’s a good bit of it.
Overall, I would recommend this novel. I think further novels from this writer will be wonderful as well!
Lee (MMC), called the Angel of Death, is well-rounded and endearing. The final passage, however, takes his persona—as well as his connection to Serin, the FMC—back to the dawn of time. Although logical, I didn't enjoy how the third act conflict was resolved because, given the seriousness of the scenario, it happened far too swiftly. Serin was likeable, even if I thought she was a little less credible. She was allegedly involved in all of her father's illicit activities at first, but this edge was largely absent from her. In the beginning, the writing style itself seemed tedious. Instead of showing, there was a lot of telling. It was a little difficult to take things seriously because of the onomatopoeic language used. However, Lee and Serin's love tale was charming and well-written. This is still a promising debut overall.
She sees him as her only expected chance of survival.
He sees her as his only unexpected chance for redemption.
Two tormented and broken souls meet in a moving tale of survival and redemption, in which the cold, strong and silent assassin finds his heart, and the intelligent, warm-hearted orphan finds salvation. Together, they find love and discover hope.
I found this book brimming with feelings, the descriptions vivid and poignant. You could actually see the characters in your mind's eye, feel their struggle and understand their motivation - all in a hundred shades of all colors, weaving a motion picture of violence and death, grit and determination, fear and angst, hope and tenderness, disappointment and acceptance, but also an epic love, transcending all that fate chose to throw in the path of absolution.
I'm glad I chose to read this new, very talented author, who managed to enthrall and turn me inside out with her words - I really look forward to the next book.

I enjoyed that the main action was focused on Asian characters.
The Angel of Death is an ex military male: Lee who finds himself entangled with a young lady Serin who is fleeing her corrupt and powerful father a Korean Senator.
The story is almost a comic book of fast paced, violent action as well as a love story.
I gave 4 stars as some of the sequencing is too far fetching.

A dark, titillating, intricate web of lies and deceit encompassed in a game where life and love is on the line and Serin and Lee are in jeopardy of losing both. Breathtaking, dangerous story filled with lot of emotions and unexpected twists.
If you like the trope “you hurt her and I kill you”, stories packed with action, smut and drama - then this is a book for you!
My thoughts with spoilers:
In the beginning of the book when Serin tracks down Lee, in the hopes that he will protect her from her father. Serins father is a Korean Senator, and lets just say Serin has some dirt on him that will ruin his whole life and many other Korean government officials. So of course, Serin’s father is trying to catch her dead or alive. What better person to protect you than a man named “Angel of Death”?
Throughout the first few chapters of the book, Lee is annoyed with himself that he agreed to protect Serin. He’s better at killing people than getting along with them. But somewhere along the way, Serin breaks down those barriers and they begin to fall in love. That is until Lee’s boss tries to assign him to killing Serin for a huge amount of money.
I haven’t read a book quite like this before where I felt like I was reading an action movie - it was refreshing and I’m hoping to read more books like this!
I liked that Serin and Lee’s relationship was the typical “grump and sunshine” but in many ways they found common ground with each other when it comes to feeling cheated by the world
Can’t forget about Lee’s two dogs Daegu and Jeju - the goodest boys ❤️
Action books require visualisation and coordination of everything in the scene. Well the author did not do it well, there was a lot of telling instead of showing. While reading, I was not able to visualise the action scenes since it was just a sea of words and not a way to create a scene in the reader's mind. I had to pick up on the basic cues and then use my own imagination (through other media) to be able to get through a big chunk. Also, the use of onomatopoeic language really threw me off. Like imagine if the scene is going well (finally able to enjoy the action) and then suddenly what you read is : "Rifle in position, she whirled from the top of the stairway and f ired. Crack crack crack crackssssssss. To the left. Crack crack. The right—crack crack crackssssss." What the hell is this?! I mean you can't literally write the sounds of whatever happening when the scenes are visual. Another from the same page : "Th-thump th-thump th-thump. Time to face another round. For herself and Lee. Crack crack crack crack crackssssssss." I mean just imagine the reader coming through the hundred S's on crack, just to portray the impact. Istg after going through a million POP! (sounds for professional guns apparently) I was on the verse to BANG! my head against the wall and literally go into a coma. Coming to the characters, I absolutely hated Serin. She started off as a super badass character since she had to go through a lot in her life but the moment she met Lee, she just transitioned to being an absolute immature woman-child. The main characters are people who are in their late 30s! We expect some kind of maturity considered their ages AND their backstories. But NO! these love birds become absolute piece of crap, they lose their sensibility (I mean Lee lost his sensibility, Serin never had much to start off with) and become super cringe characters. The author definitely tried to compensate Serin's annoying character by introducing 3 actually admirable people named Daeshim, Dami and Rake. I absolutely LOVED these characters because they were the only ones who were sane and actually acted according to their line of work. Honestly speaking, if the author could have switched and made Dami the main female character, the book would have gone way better but can't help it now. These three people are the only ones in the entire book who are actually sensible and act accordingly. Now coming to the million sex scenes that were written just for the sake of the book to be "smutty and spicy". This was a great way to reach the word count. I mean if we remove the sex scenes, approx 50-70 pages would be saved. The fact that you actually used erotica as filler and then made it a main genre. It literally annoyed me how you wrote a sex scene before AND after a major/minor event, like the book literally consisted of alternating smut and action and it didn't even make any sense? Also them having "animalistic" sex annoyed the hell out of me and at the beginning we got to know that Serin had been sexually abused multiple times before and she has been a "forced prostitute" too, then how was she so easily able to have sex? I mean I know it's voluntary on behalf of her and what not, but having wild submissive animalistic sex would definitely trigger her past trauma. And him making GUTTURAL GROWLS everytime after fucking her just irritated the hell out of me. Technically, guttural growls are the sounds you make when you are hungry and/or suffering through an acid reflux *lol*. I also didn't like how their relationship was purely sex-driven and how at the end the author had to write some beautiful dialogues just to compensate and prove that they actually loved each other. Now coming to Rake. This character is so badly scripted that it's so predictable that Rake is gonna do something big at the end. This 2d character who's introduced as "an Australian hunk" was obviously kept under the bush so that he would help the author to "resolve" Lee's death. I mean in the entire book, every damn character is korean (obviously) and only Rake is the one who's Australian... Anything suspicious? YES. Like why would the author introduce a character who's from a whole different continent and not use him to hide Lee? It's so damn obvious I can't. Another point is that the author could have properly introduced all the politicians instead of writing a million sex scenes. It didn't help when you knew nothing about the "villain" and then you directly start reading about them getting killed. DIDN'T HELP.
I found this author when I was lucky enough to beta read her upcoming book. It made me love her writing and I told her I would read this book because I needed more of her stories.
I honestly love how she writes her romances. I loved Lee and Serin and I loved their love together despite all of their obstacles. Of course, as an Asian myself, I loved the Asian representation.
I usually only read romances, but I think this was nicely split 50/50 between romance and suspense. I appreciate that because it let me venture into a different genre while still staying in my comfort zone. Like I said, I loved the romance even though the suspense had my anxiety on high alert.
Overall, I really did love this book. I can’t wait to read more from Sylan.
I loved the book! I would have rated it 4.5! It was a fast-paced, steamy, tragic love story that made me cry. It was unpredictable and it was like watching a movie on Netflix with all the special effects!
Great debut book! Would love to read more...

Serin is on the run from her cruel and ruthless father. A corrupt and powerful politician that abused and used her to gain power against other powerful men by blackmailing them. Dirty little secrets that were recorded. She trusts no one. Finding the angel of death will be difficult but she knows he can help her. Only a handful of people know of Lee's true identity and what he dos for a living. He's disciplined. Has a routine. No distractions. He is taken back when a strange woman approaches him and asks him, the angel of death, to help her. "Lee and Serin’s love story was much like the coming together of two shattered souls finding their broken pieces with each other. It was so raw, so beautiful."
