It kept me on the edge of my seat. I knew Hunter was the killer no doubt but never saw the twist with him planning the evidence. I loved how everyone got justice except Hawkins. I would have loved to see him get his share. Great book.
For my book club we picked two local crime writers, and Body Toll was the fiction selection. What I enjoyed about this police procedural is one can tell the procedural part of the book is authentic. In fact, the author himself said he pays close attention to details because it drives him crazy to read inaccuracies in police work. Also, I enjoyed the local aspect of book, and recognizing streets, areas, Pete's Bar, etc. The book is told from the viewpoint of Clay and the killer. This is the author's first book, and I think that helps explain what I did not love about the book. At times the dialog between the characters felt stilted and unnatural, with characters giving more elaborate explanations than normal conversational talk. This is something that might improve as the author writes more books. The book had a nice twist in the end, and overall I enjoyed this novel.
This is not a book I would normally choose, but it was selected by my book club because the book takes place in Ponte Vedra and Jacksonville Beach, FL...about 10 minutes from where we live. It is fiction and the plot revolves around a serial killer and the efforts of the police department to find him. The book was written by the Chief of Police at Jacksonville Beach, Bruce Thomason, who, along with wife, will be guests at our book club meeting this Wednesday night. It should be a lively discussion. I will never be able to go to the beach and all of the restaurants that are mentioned in the book again without thinking about the characters in this book. It will probably be made into a movie if he is good at marketing himself.
Body Toll was the first book I read by Bruce Thomason. I love detective/crime novels from James Patterson's Alex Cross, to Steward Woods' Stone Barrington. I'm happy to say, Bruce Thomason's Clay Randall peeks the highest in a realistic character as well as his cohorts, whether they are one of the good guys or villains. Thomason brings these people to life with a page-turning novel. If you like crime novels and even if it's not your thing, I found Body Toll one of those books hard to put down. Heidi Tassone Author
If you spend any measurable time away from name and in a different place, you can feel some strings attaching to that other place. For us, it's Northeast Florida. So this book, taking place in Jacksonville Beach, gave me the feeling that I was "right there," as all the action was unfolding. Written by the chief of the JB Police, it was not badly done.
Great book of police, with good relationships and mysteries. The characters are fun to read each book, and like to keep seeing whats going on in their lives.
