In this all new collection of cures and controls for unsavory yard invaders, Jerry Baker shares simple tips and tricks to banish bugs and other critters from lawns and gardens—and almost all the ingredients can be found in the average cabinet. With homemade mixes, common products, and "old-fashioned grow-how," gardeners learn how to eliminate virtually any pest problem. Fixes are arranged by yard area afflicted, so a solution can be found as soon as symptoms are seen. Other features include "This is Their Life" pest profiles, "Grandma Knew Best" folk remedies, and "Ask Jerry" answers for common troubleshooting. Whether the uninvited guests are insects, rodents, or even larger mammals such as deer, these safe, natural, do-it-yourself tonics leave yards garden-party ready.
Old school Jerry Baker takes the pests (rodents, insects, other animals) one at a time and tells how to eliminate each one. Baker takes an organic approach using household supplies; after all, who wants to put poison on their food!
My gardens, including my food producing and flower gardens, attract a fair number of pests. Baker gives good advice, providing a bank of ideas of procedures to try when needed. Not everything will work as planned, but it is good to have an arsenal of ideas.
Even if you are not a gardener, many of you may be plagued by stink bugs which are not a native species. They were recently introduced to the east coast where they have no natural enemies; besides being a nuisance, they are causing huge damage to farmers' crops. I have declared them garden enemy #1!
I am doing everything I can to eliminate stink bugs from my garden, and hoped to find some good ideas in this book. After looking on the internet and finding this picture: I am surprised that Jerry Baker did not suggest hiring the neighborhood children to pick and eat stink bugs. Maybe that only works in 3rd world countries. (My apologies to those of you who are trying to enjoy a bagel and juice while catching up on the computer!)
I have read a couple of gardening books lately, including this one, that prompted me to buy a couple of praying mantis egg cases. The first one hatched out a week ago, which you can see in video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WwIi3s... or a photo:
Unfortunately, it rained for several days afterward, sometimes in torrents, and now I rarely see any of the baby praying mantises when I pick strawberries. I did drop them in several places, so I am hoping some weathered the storm. Also the other egg case was stored in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks, and now is in the terrarium on my screened in porch.
Please do me a favor, even if you are not interested in this book, squish all stink bugs! Or follow Baker's idea and drop them in a container of soapy water where their exoskeletons will quickly be coated with the soap disallowing respiration and they will die. Thanks in advance!
