Detective Mark Benemonti is still getting over his last relationship when he meets Sterling Steele - a Greek God in sweat pants - in his local park, and is instantly smitten. Mark knows that Sterling would never lie to him like his ex-boyfriend did. He's just too sweet and innocent. Right? But while Sterling adores Mark, he's dealing with an unhappy past of his own. He's been hurt too many times to trust Mark straight away.
When Sterling’s secret - the fact that he works as a female impersonator at a club called Ruby Slippers - is unexpectedly and explosively revealed, Mark and Sterling's relationship falls apart. By the time Mark realizes he’s made a mistake, Sterling isn't in a listening mood. Mark is really going to have to go the extra mile in order to get his boyfriend back... the question is, can he handle his very own pair of Ruby Slippers
4.5 Mark is a police detective who sees the gorgeous Sterling as Sterling is out jogging, followed by getting mugged. They connect immediately, and Sterling is beyond adorable. He is a big, muscled man with a brush cut who blushes easily and is, in Marks words, so cute. The fact that he works as a singer, in a dress, is something he thought to break to Mark slowly. Who knew Mark would be a complete and utter asshat pig about the whole thing. Sterling Is so hurt by Marks cruelty, I just wanted to slap Mark. That Sterling stays true to himself is a wonderful thing, and Marks way of groveling was what Sterling needed. SO cute, and loved Sterlings best friend Bobby.

This short novella surprised me since it gave us an insight on a world that is not common in the M/M romance, that of the drag queens. I have to say that, after movies like Priscilla, or the US remake To Wong Foo, with an unforgettable Patrick Swayze, I’m maybe a little biased, well prepared to like the story of a flaming drag queen, Sterling Steele, that already from his given name, has a soul of a diva in a body of a trucker. Sterling was a chubby kid, not so tall and maybe a little too “round”; but appearance are deceptive and in the end, his inner diva came out and he is now a female impersonator in a night club. Problem is that he tends to attract “straight acting” men, i.e. those gay men who think lipstick and eyeshadow are a shame for the gay population, let alone wearing a dress.
Of course Mark, the straight acting gay man, has some issues of his own to resolve; first of all he is a cop, and even if he has moved in a gay friendly city to avoid the closet, he has still this idea that being a gay man makes him a lesser cop; second he is from an Italo-American family, and maybe he has the preconception that a man has to do a man work and the woman has to be at home waiting for him; and last but not least, Mark was in love with another straight acting man who left him for a woman: if he admits that anything womanly is attractive, he will give a reason to Bryan to what he has done, and now way he will do that. So only manly man for Mark, even when Sterling is obviously his soul mate.
The story has a less dramatic and angst tone that what it could have been, and Sterling is really a cute man, I really felt for the inner diva struggling to come out when he was a kid and now forced back in the closet to appease Mark’s expectation on what it means being gay. I think the purpose of the author was to give a message without being preachy, in the end what really matters is only love.
A lot of telling instead of showing, and a lot of beating a point over the head for the reader. Mark thought men shouldn't wear make-up, hated it, loathed it... okay, give the reader some credit to get it.
It was a simple, if predictable plot, with good characters and an excellent explosion to threaten the HEA, but the delivery kept me from getting lost in the story.
While this isn't a glowing review, it wasn't a bad story, and the characters were interesting enough that I hope to pick up the companion story about James and Ethan.
Very good m/m romance about a police detective who thinks that men shouldn't wear makeup or do anything feminine, so when he finds out what his boyfriend does for a living, things get ugly. I enjoyed the chance to see James and Ethan from What They Say About Love as secondary characters.
This is a great quick read. This is all about personal prejudices and perceptions. Sterling was adorable and had such contradictions (loved it). Mark...man I thought that there was nothing that he could have done to make up for what he did...he did okay...I would have made him grovel more. A couple of the lines at the end were cliche' but she had to fit in the ruby slippers somewhere.
This was my first cross-dresser, m/m read and I really enjoyed it as a quick, fun, short story. I'm still trying to picture guys with broad shoulders and big feet in drag and can't quite do it even though I spent quite a bit of time in the West Village in NYC, rubbing shoulders with the gay community there. Guess I just wasn't visiting the right clubs, lol. Fun read I recommend. 4 1/2 stars.
I would love to see this one made into a movie. :-) There is not nearly enough drag queen romance in the M/M genre. Short stories tend to leave me wanting, but this one felt just right. There was a lot of emotion packed into the pages. The big blow up was painful to read, but seemed realistic. My heart went out to both of these characters. The ending (although I had guessed it ahead of time based on the description) was perfect. A joy to read.
3,5 * I loved Mark and Sterling and I could relate to their issues. I loved the theme about x-dressing. I found that Mark's issue with cross dressing, especially in public in front of colleagues was not resolved to my satisfaction. I think a little more struggle on that issue would have been more believable.
