Highland Lairds #1

The Laird's Prize

Rate this book
Three Scottish brothers, born minutes apart, must safeguard the lands their father left each of them as their legacy, against their enemies, and the feisty, independent ladies who remind them what it is to be human and loved.

Lady Douglass de Clifford is reticent about marrying an English soldier who holds a Scottish castle for their king—after all, she doesn’t really believe the English should be battling the Scots for their own land. When she arrives in Dumfries, their party is unexpectedly ambushed. Besieged by rebel Scots, she is tossed from her horse, only to be saved by a Highland warrior who promises safety even as he absconds with her. She vows to run away, until his tender kiss makes her doubt everything she’s ever known.

Laird Noah Sinclair had not expected to find an English bride in the center of his battle, and now he’s determined to take from his enemy what he prizes most—his lady. As the eldest of his brothers, and laird of his clan, he has a responsibility to those who look to him for leadership. But when Lady Douglass threatens to run away, and is nearly accosted by an outlaw, he is determined to prove to everyone that she is his and his alone. While at first his decision to steal the prize seemed like a punishment, her kiss proves to be rewarding all on its own.

But a love between them seems impossible. Despite the passion igniting between Noah and Douglass, they only wed for her protection, and for his revenge. Tucked away from battle at Castle Buanaiche in the northern most part of the Highlands, Noah fears misfortune may befall his clan for stealing another man’s bride, and it seems like danger is a little closer at hand than they both expected...

Well, this was a waste of time. I had low expectations with this author to begin with. Fortunately, the audiobook is available in Audible's Plus Catalogue and I can return it.

I've read/listened to many Highlander romances over the years and this is the first time the Scottish hero's name is Noah and the English heroine's name is Douglas. Each time the heroine's name came up, I had to remind myself that it was a woman's name. I think the hero is a triplet. His brothers have traditional Scottish names - Alistair and Iain.

This was light for a Highlander romance, which is the main reason why I did not enjoy it. The hero did not have alpha male tendencies. He even His clan accepted the heroine as their laird's wife even though she's English. Only one of his sisters disliked the heroine. The heroine's father loved her and wanted her happiness. There was a minor love story for the heroine's aunt and one of the hero's clansmen.

The non-light parts: There were two battles at the beginning of the book and the heroine and her aunt were almost raped by outlaws when they tried to escape.

Still, nothing interesting really happens after they married till the end and even then, the conflict was

Revenge

Once again we read a story by Eliza Knight that has all the feels as only she can tell it. The King of England has ordered a marriage between a Lord assigned to.keep a castle in Scotland for Him and an English Lady who has no desire to marry. Enter a Scottish Laird who rescues her and so the tale of fear, evil and love evolves in a story you won't be able to put down

Lady Douglass de Clifford is less than thrilled at the notion of venturing to Scotland to marry the English knight who holds a castle for their king there. She doesn’t really think the English have any business trying to force the Scots off their own land anyway. When her traveling party is attacked outside her betrothed’s gates, Douglass finds herself kidnapped by a Highland warrior, though he promises her safety all the while. She fully intends to flee from him at the first opportunity, but his tenderness soon challenges everything she thought she knew about the Scots.

Laird Noah Sinclair, the Earl of Caithness, had no intention of taking a bride at all, much less an English one, but he knows no better way to keep her safe from his enemy. Though passion ignites between Noah and Douglass, a true love seems unlikely given the reasons for their marriage and the remaining threat of the English knight whose bride was stolen.

This was a fun and fast Highland romp. The heroine, Douglass, had to grow on me, but I did like her by the end. Noah was very sweet with her, but I would’ve enjoyed a bit more character examination on how he went from not believing in marital love to being in love with his new wife and being the one to confess his feelings first. Some aspects of their relationship development felt a bit incomplete, but it was a quick enough story that I didn’t really mind. Overall, this was a fun marriage of convenience story to pass the time with.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Blog link: https://mustreadalltheromance.blogspo...

This book was ok, it had all the classic tropes of a historical Scottish Romance but in some ways I feel a little bit of a let down. I love the OG Scottish romances: the bodice rippers, the manly men, touch her and you die, you belong to me, have my babies immediately 😂🙈😍 These modern versions of Scottish romances seem to leave much to be desired when it comes to the characters and the storyline. It’s a little too light.

Also had a really hard time with the names of the main characters. I know that seems silly but the MFC’s name is a man’s name, like a legit man’s name, not just a fun Unisex name, it was so confusing. And the MMC’s name is not what I would consider traditionally Scottish. Just a trip up for me 🤷🏼‍♀️

To be honest, I think I would’ve liked to have read the side characters’ story more. Alice and Collum were adorable!

Overall, a fine read and I’m definitely interested in continuing on with the series.

This is the first I've read of this author and I adored this story! Douglass and Noah were both really sweet and watching them get comfortable with each other and close was adorable. The supporting characters were also wonderful. I'm so excited for the rest of the series!

Northern England, 1300

This book starts during the Wars of Scottish Independence. It is when King Edward I Longshanks, the hammer of the Scots, is trying to over take Scotland and wiping every Scottish inhabitant away, stealing their fortresses and lands plus murdering and torturing the people. He awards men like Sir John de Segrave with Scottish castles and brides as rewards.

Segrave is an English knight that has been violating Scotland and its people for years. In this case it was Lady Douglass de Clifford the King who was forced to marry. The last thing she wants is to marry this man as she has heard how ruthless he is on the battlefield. Plus it’s a forced marriage ordered by her King Edward I not a love match. She doesn’t agree that England stealing everything from the Scottish people is right. She feels England should stay in England and stop stealing from the Scottish people and leave them and their country alone. After all it is the Scottish people’s homeland though she does see them as barbaric from everything she has heard.

As Laird Noah Sinclair knows that John de Segrave has been leading the English in destroying his lands and murdering its people. Enough is enough he hears his betrothed is coming, so for revenge Laird Noah Sinclair steals Douglass, yet it is also to protect her too. He knows what an abusive and cruel husband Segraves would be! It is rumored he has killed a couple of his previous wives. As the attraction between Noah and Douglass is immediate as she is opposite everything he thought of English women besides being the bonniest woman he ever saw! As she is a courageous, intelligent, warm, sincere gutsy lass with the heart of a warrior. She defends what she thinks is right and good.

Will Segraves come after Noah and try to steal Douglass or will he want to kill her, thinking her as damaged goods? Will Douglass's father want to go to war with the Sinclair clan thinking his daughter was taken against her will and is being mistreated along with his sister Alice? As for Segrave, he can’t let Noah have her as she was his merchandise, a gift from Longshanks but will Noah let the woman who owns his heart go? Is it a battle to the death? Can Noah even survive? Read and find out!

Another fabulous Eliza Knight story that I absolutely loved. It shows how not all English people are in agreement with the English violating Scotland and its people. As some feel Scotland should just be left alone after all it was never theirs to just steal, raid and battle over! Again Knight weaves historical facts with the mention of some iconic historical figures like King Robert the Bruce and King Edward I Longshanks of England that they call the hammer of the Scot’s. Knight also pens a beautiful enemies to lovers story that is absolutely extraordinary right from the start. I loved the instant chemistry between the English Lady and the Scottish Laird as he is definitely a swoon worthy character romance readers will love. The heroine was easy to enjoy as she wanted an equal partner but wanted to learn how to help and work with others in the clan but asked questions when she didn't understand.

I have been reading Eliza Knight books for over twelve years and I have loved everything she has ever written. I started with her Scottish historical romance books but I also love her Historical fiction books like “The Mayfair Bookshop” which was absolutely brilliant. I look forward to reading “Starring Adele Astaire” that will be released on June 6, 2023. I highly recommend The Lairds Prize as it's a magnificent start to a captivating new series! One readers do not want to miss!

Lady Douglass de Clifford, always assumed that if she was ever married, it would be to an English noble with an English estate, never in her wildest dreams did she imagine that King Edward would order her father, Baron de Clifford to escort her to Scotland to wed Sir John Segrave. She is devastated, not only is marrying a man she has never met but she is being sent to Scotland, the land of heathen barbarians. The only good thing about all of this is that her father is sending his much younger, unwed sister Alice with her as a companion. Alice tries to cheer her with stories of Scotland and especially Highlanders, she also extolls the benefits of marriage to Sir John, but none of it makes Douglass feel better and she wonders if maybe Alice could be persuaded to marry Sir John. Their trip is uneventful but as they approach Caerlaverock, the holding Sir John now controls, they are attacked by a band of Scots, and with no help from Sir John or his men, Douglass is frantic to save Alice and herself. But instead of escaping, her worst nightmare has come to pass, as she and her aunt are captured by the Scots and whisked away.

Noah Sinclair, the Earl of Caithness and Laird of the Sinclairs at Buanaiche Castle in the highlands, is in the lowlands escorting his sister Matilda to visit her betrothed and to see his brother Alistair at his holding, Dunbais Castle. Noah is the eldest of triplet sons, he inherited his father’s title, the family’s main holding, and guardianship of his two younger sisters, Matilda and Iliana. They are on their way back to the highlands when they come across one of Alistair’s villages under attack. Noah sends his sister back to Alistair’s and he and his men fight off the English soldiers. Alistair arrives after the battle and they determine that Sir John Segrave is responsible. Sir John is cruel and encourages his men to brutalize the Scots. Noah and his brothers don’t want war, but they will not cede their country to King Edward, they have joined with Robert the Bruce and will fight for their freedom. After this attack, they plan to strike back at Sir John, and what better way than to steal his bride?

Both Douglass and Noah have a lot of preconceived notions about each other, and both are shocked by the attraction they hold for each other. All Douglass wants to do is escape the handsome Scot and return to England. But when an escape attempt goes horribly and horrifically wrong, she realizes that is better off with Noah, and can only hope he is a man of his word. They return to Alistair’s castle and there Noah shocks her by pronouncing they will marry. She is taken aback by the idea, but realizes, if she doesn’t marry him, and he does return her to her father, she will most likely have to marry Sir John, the man who did nothing to help them when Noah’s warriors attacked. She agrees but makes it clear, this is a marriage in name only, Noah agrees that he will not touch her unless she wants him to. They finally make it to his castle, by now they have both come to realize that they were wrong about the other and a true friendship begins. Things are going so well that Douglass is beginning to think that her marriage could be a true marriage. But old promises and new ones may end this union before it really gets a chance to take off, especially when allies side with enemies.

This was a well-written, nicely-paced start to what is shaping up to be a great new series. I will admit that I am not a fan of the name Douglass for the heroine, but aside from that, I really liked her character, she made a true effort to be open-minded, and besides that, she was intelligent, compassionate, loyal, and steadfast in her feelings. Noah was equally as wonderful, but that is not to say they didn’t hit any bumps in the road to their HEA, but they also didn’t let miscommunications and assumptions poison them either. This enemy-to-lovers story is filled with emotion, action, hard choices, wonderful secondary characters, steamyish love scenes, a sweet secondary romance, a couple of nail-biting moments, and finally a HEA, complete with an epilogue that nicely sets up the next book. I am happy to recommend this title as I enjoyed this book and will be eagerly awaiting the next installment!

The Laird's Prize
Highland Lairds Book One
Eliza Knight
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lady Douglass de Clifford really doesn't want to marry an English soldier who holds a Scottish castle for their king. She really doesn't think that the English should be battling the Scots for their own land either. When she arrives in Dumfries, their party is not expecting an ambush. Now besieged by rebel Scots, she jumps into the moat with her horse, only to be saved by a Highland warrior who promises her safely although he has blatantly abducted her. She starts planning and vows to run away until his sweet and tender kiss makes her doubt everything she's ever thought she knew.

Lord Noah Sinclair was not looking for a bride and certainly didn't expect to end up with one, but now he's determined to take from his enemy this beautiful English lass. He's the eldest of two twin brothers and has two younger sisters. And as Laird of his clan, he has a necessary responsibility to those who look to him for leadership. But when Lady Douglass threatens to run away and is nearly accosted by an outlaw, he is determined to prove to everyone that she is his and his alone.

Considering one is from England and the other from Scotland, love does seem impossible. Despite the passion rising in both of them, they only really married for protection and revenge. Tucked away from battle at Castle Buanaiche in the northern most part of the Highlands, Noah fears misfortune in the name of war might befall his clan for stealing another man's bride.
And it seems danger is closer than either of them could have expected it to be.

Oh my gosh, Eliza Knight is so incredibly talented. This book is pure bliss. From the moment I started reading until the last word was read, I felt like I was right there on one heck of a journey with the characters. Noah and Douglass were so perfect for each other, and I truly enjoyed watching their love bloom from being ubducted to an all-consuming unconditional love that so many didn't have the luxury of finding back then. This was a wonderful book and a great new start to a new series. I, for one, can't wait to see what happens in the next book. Ms. Knight, this was such a great book, and I recommend it to historical romance readers everywhere.

Lady Douglass de Clifford knows her own mind but can never explain who she really is. Douglass wants to escape yet really can’t. So, when her father decides to send Douglass to Scotland to marry an English knight with her aunt, she despises the Scots because they are heathens. Douglass, luckily, has her aunt to make her feel better; even though her aunt believes Scotland is a magical fantasy land. Meanwhile, Laird Noah Sinclair hears a scream and watches a whole village on his brother’s land destroyed by English soldiers. Noah finds out the person responsible for the destruction however is Douglass’s betrothed. So, as Douglass is heading to her future, her, her aunt, father and faithful guard are ambushed by Noah and his group of warriors. Douglass attempts to escape but Noah manages to get her and her aunt taking them both back to Scotland. As Douglass learns about the Scottish and Noah. Douglass can’t help but fall for him. Yet danger lurks even when Douglass finds happiness because her jilted bridegroom isn’t going to give up her that easily.
What a wonderful adventuresome historical romance but really takes you for quite a ride from the get go! The story really never slowed down moving from one harrowing plot twist to the next. Even with all the fighting going on there manages to be two sigh worthy romances that are totally worth reading about. Do I look forward to another Scottish tale filled with English and Scottish enemies to lover’s romance? Why of course I really do! Douglass at first wasn’t a very nice heroine. She seemed very superficial and didn’t care for the Scots but yes, slowly I did warm up to her. While Noah on the other hand was truly an absolute dream and just a great book boyfriend hero that of course I couldn’t help falling for him too. In truth, the only bad thing is I just didn’t want the story to end. Ms. Eliza Knight even writes with such enthusiasm that it really makes the book not only a joy to read but hard to put down too!

Lady Douglass de Clifford is on her way to her fate. A fate that has been ordered by the King, to marry a man she has never met, in a land full of heathens, or so she has been told her life. She never has believed the English should be meddling in Scotland and has no intention of accepting this fate without at least attempting an escape.
Noah Sinclaire is determined to punish the English commander responsible for the destruction of his brothers clans village. He has heard the vile man is to be expecting a bride and is determined to save the woman of this horrible fate to such a vile man. Little did he know that the moment he saw this woman that his world would change forever. She is beautiful, brave, strong and she is exactly what he wants.
Great story. Loved the characters. He doesn't love a good hearted hero like Noah?
Great read

Quick, easy read! Will certainly pick up the other books in the series when I want a little escape.

*Possible Spoilers*
I really loved both MCs. Sure, he kidnapped her as a 🖕 to the English. However, there was love, passion, patience, respect, kindness, generosity, CONSENT, and compromise from very early on. A Scotsman in the time of Richard the Bruce (14th Century) being as honorable toward women, and as pro education, pro self-defense as he is just feels...surprising and appreciated. Douglass was resilient and smart from the get-go, and she took an active role in her new home, genuinely wanting to form friendships and understanding/appreciation for the work everyone put into their community. I found myself rooting for these two to have a beautiful life together, without any conflicting feelings about it.

Marriage for protection or love?

Noah Sinclair, a laird, an Earl, and the oldest of 3 brothers born minutes apart is tired of the English killing the Scots. When he comes across a village being slaughtered, he and his men intervene. The English knight responsible is not a surprise but the fact that he is waiting on his betrothed to arrive is an opportunity. Noah and his men kidnap his betrothed, Douglass and her aunt, and take them north for his protection. The only way to ensure her safety is to marry her. Douglass soon finds that all the stories she heard about the dirty, uneducated, brutal, evil highlanders is untrue and she quickly grows to care deeply for her husband. They is still danger from her former betrothed and a neighboring clan. This is a well written story with lots of excitement and great characters.

English Lady Douglass de Clifford knew she would marry an English lord so when her father is ordered his daughter sent Scotland to wed an Englishman Sir John Segrave. She's trying to think of a way out of this marriage that the King has ordered. Noah Sinclaire is out for revenge and decides to save the woman of this horrible fate to such a vile man. During the attack he captures her to save her from the vile man she's set to marry. I love this story fate has definitely been at play her Noah has no idea what he's set in motion, Douglass is not your typical young woman is not only beautiful but brave and strong. His perfect match in all ways. I have voluntarily read and reviewed the amazing story.

When Douglass is abducted at her betrotheds doorstep she has so many emotions, scared, angry, relief. Dreading marrying a man she has heard nothing but terrible things about Douglass could be going from the frying pan to the fire!

When Noah abducts Douglass he has many reasons for it, but the one thing he doesn’t count on is a woman with beauty and strength, a woman he for the first time could make a wife.l

This was such a wonderful story to read. I got lost in this book. Beautifully written so that I could picture in my mind the story! Definitely my Calgon take me away book! I can’t wait for the next in the series. I absolutely recommend reading this book!

Lady Douglass de Clifford is trying to think of a way out of this marriage that the King has ordered. Her father has no choice but to deliver her to a man who is known to be cruel in his conquests in Scotland.

Laird Noah Sinclair is travelling from his brother's home when he sees a chance for revenge against an enemy.

This is a steamy Highlander romance with fabulous characters. Our heroine has quite made up her mind about all things Scottish and nothing her romantic aunt can tell her will change that. Our hero is a family and Clan driven man, who will protect the innocent when he can.

A very exciting and action packed story.

I loved it.

Yes, this is a retelling of The Highlander's Reward but back in 2012 that book was probably one of my favorites. So just like a favorite blue print for a house, similar main features but with differences, I still enjoyed this story. I haven't read The Highlander's Reward for several years but The Laird's Prize seemed a lighter, slightly shorter version. It was a quick read that I enjoyed. The negatives=slightly modern language (a few examples= "meltdown", "superiority complexes"), didn't care for h's name- Douglass, and the last chapter was one long sex scene. Other than that I would recommend it. A 4.5 rating.

Much more polished than the last book I read by this author. I actually quite enjoyed this one. Her writing is a bit stiff and stilted at times, which interrupts the flow of the narrative and makes it a slower read than it really should be. I liked the characters, although I kept having to remind myself that Douglass was female, which distracted me from the story at times. I’ve just never come across it as a feminine name but apparently it was, especially in Scotland. The progression of the relationship was sweet.

To Wait Another Year!! 😩😩

Such a wonderful story! I loved the characters and storyline so much. So happy Ian will be the next story with Rhiannon. Douglass and Noah were so happy, Alice and Conal and a baby on the way. Nice!!! Matilda and Iliana need their own stories. To wait an entire year will be tough for the follow up book. Eliza Knight your historical romances are the best!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💜💜💜💜💜😊😊😊😊😊

It’s my first book I read from this author. I’m been wondering how could I not discover Eliza for these long!?

Love each characters. Both H/h were really likable. The story mostly evolve around romance between H&h which is really sweet to read. Love their conversations too. Just one teeny tiny annoyance which is our h name is Douglass (just … hmmm 🤔 why this name!?)

Lady Douglas is on her way to Scotland to marry a man she doesn't want. As she continues to think of ways to escape, the castle is attacked, and she ends up rescued by Scottish Lord Noah. Well, this isn't going well. Most of the story is watching Noah and Douglas being attracted to each other, and ultimately falling in love. The last part is her father and the man she was to marry showing up to rescue her.
I enjoyed the narrator.

Abducted
The beautiful redhead English lady was absconded by a rebel Scot. Laird Noah Sinclair was the eldest of triplets and the guardian of his two sisters. The Sinclair’s were a tight knit family and enjoyed life. Lady Douglas fit right in with his sisters and with Noah too. Exciting, fast paced adventures and great love story. I can’t wait to read Rhiannon and Ian’s story!

There are only two things that I didn’t love about this book, one being the heroine’s name (Douglass) and the second being not enough obstacles, the road to the happy ending was just too easy :) Still, I’m giving it 5 stars - it’s so sweet and heartwarming that it wouldn’t be ok to rate it any lower.

New to me author- An easy read with likeable characters and good energy. Both MC's spewed decent chemistry but it just didn't click for me like it did for other readers. Started off fun but soon became boring... boring because of the lack of electricity between the MC's. It just didn't feel authentic.

Still good though.

Douglass was not looking forward to marrying an English lord in Scotland so when she is rescued and captured by her Scottish laird she willingly consents to being his wife. As they both learn to love each other and overcome the resulting complications they truly find their hea. For those like me who do not enjoy open door intimacy you will find you need to do a lot of page skipping
