A little backstory is in order. I have been searching unsuccessfully for this book since the 1990s. I could not remember the name of the story, and my Google-fu is so weak that even the internet couldn’t identify this (fairly obscure) children’s book for me.
A hero finally appeared in the form of a helpful librarian at my local public library. When I whined about my failure to locate this book, she found it for me on her first try!
The tale is about Cunningham, a cat who writes songs. He becomes friends with a music-loving rooster named Kenneth, who thinks Cunningham’s tunes are wonderful.
One evening as Cunningham is leaving the house to go to town, he warns Kenneth not to wander outside after dark, for a chicken-eating possum has been lurking in the neighborhood. But Kenneth doesn’t listen, and….SNAP!
The reason that I had searched for the book for so many years was because of the way my two (only a pair at the time) small children had reacted to the tale. The kids were two and three years old, and we snuggled in bed every night and read stacks of books from the public library. As we were reading a new book about a sweet cat and a friendly rooster, I turned the page and saw a picture of a sharp-fanged forest demon with mouth agape - and I promptly skipped over those pages so as not to traumatize any children at bedtime!
But I didn’t get away with it. Four little hands reached to flip the page back to the drawing of the beastly possum, and a great discussion ensued as to exactly how a real possum looks, how he acts, and what he eats.
Fortunately, the existential crisis did not come to pass. Everyone slept well and soundly, and neither kid developed phobias of darkness or of marsupials.
Thank you to librarians everywhere for what you do!
