About the author

Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio, better known as J.M.G. Le Clézio (born 13 April 1940) is a Franco-Mauriciano novelist. The author of over forty works, he was awarded the 1963 Prix Renaudot for his novel Le Procès-Verbal (The Interrogation) and the 2008 Nobel Prize in Literature.

By evoking Raga, the name of Pentecost Island in the Apma language, JMG le Clézio becomes a geographer, anthropologist, and poet. The geographer describes at length Oceania, this "invisible continent," of which he gives here an exciting and unexpected definition. Anthropologist speaks of the origin of local populations and their History complex in many respects. A poet above all because the writing of this work is magnificent, elegant, colorful, and imbued with spirituality.

Az író tulajdonképpen érzelem-importőr. Ha szeret valamit, megpróbálja eladni az olvasónak, hogy ő is szeresse. Clézio például szereti Polinéziát, és mindent megtesz, hogy mi is szeressük. Átadja nekünk a történetét, beszélteti a lakóit, elmondatja velük legendáikat és sérelmeiket. Vonzalma pedig olyan erős, hogy nem képes az ismeretterjesztő próza határain belül megmaradni, időnként szinte azonosul velük, átéli mítoszaikat - ilyenkor a szöveg egyértelműen átcsúszik fikcióba. De hát a szerelem már csak ilyen: ritkán tud tárgyszerű maradni.

Különös könyv, nem regény, nem történelem, nem útirajz, de mindegyikből van benne egy pirinyó. Mondjuk bő száz oldal az egész, szóval érthető, ha nem fér bele sok. Inkább csak megcsillan benne a végtelen óceán tágassága, a szigeti civilizációk gazdagsága, de nincs tér a kibontakozásra. Azért szerelmes levélnek nem utolsó. De hogy meg lehet-e ismerni belőle a láthatatlan kontinenst... hát, inkább csak kedvet kapunk a megismeréshez.

Uno strano intreccio tra romanzo, diario e saggio, il libro del premio Nobel J.M.G. Le Clézio, Il continente invisibile (titolo originale, Raga. Approche du continent invisible), è un'incursione in stile documentaristico-enciclopedico nel misterioso e remoto mondo della Polinesia.

Più precisamente, si tratta della Melanesia, sul territorio di alcune isole di grande interesse culturale (e turistico), anche se a lungo ignorato. Raga è il primo di questi isolotti, appartenente al giovane stato indipendente di Vanuatu.

Unter all den Literaturnobelpreisträgern der letzten Dekade scheint Le Clézio - zumindest wenn man nach Goodreads geht - wohl der unpopulärste zu sein. Warum? Ich weiß es nicht. Vielleicht hat er die falsche Hautfarbe, um mit seinem Thema Kolonialismus bei den Menschen, die sich für dieses Thema interessieren Anklang zu finden. Vielleicht ist seine Thema Mauritius und die Inselwelt des Pazifik auf zu weit weg von der Lebenswelt der lesenden Europäer und Amerikaner. Ich jedenfalls mag diese zeitlosen, lehrreichen und eingängigen Bücher von Le Clézio in seinem W.G. Sebald oder Bruce Chatwin artigen Stil, der zwischen Roman und Dokumentation schwankt, auch wenn die Zerstörung der jeweiligen Inselparadiese durch den Kolonialismus oft harte Kost sind. Im vorliegenden Fall ist das Raga, eine Insel von Vanuatu. Das ist insoweit interessant, als dass die Inselwelt Polynesiens - wohl auch aufgrund der deutschen kolonialen Vergangenheit - in nahezu allen ethnologischen Sammlungen Deutschlands besonders prominent durch Artefakte repräsentiert wird und wir zugleich keinen blassen Schimmer von der Vorstellungswelt dieser Menschen haben. Hier setzt Le Clésio an und versucht diese in erster Linie selbst zu Wort kommen zu lassen.

Xüsusilə, ABŞ-da quldarlığın ləğv edildiyi XIX əsrdə məhz Okeaniya adalarında quldarlığın əsasının qoyulmağa başlaması, 100 000-lərlə insanın oğurlanaraq müstəmləkələrdə qul kimi işlədilməsi, acımasız talanlar, mənəvi və fiziki zorakılıq bu xalqın tarixinə və mədəniyyətinə silinməz izini qoysa da, onların dirçəlməsi, torpaqdan güc alaraq özünü qorumasına şahid oluruq (təbii ki, bu fikirlər 2005-2006-cı illərə gedib çıxır).

Kitabın yaratdığı bu mistik-emosional tonu Raqa dünyasını anlamağa və sevməyə başlamağa və daha çoxunu istəməyə vadar edir. Sadəcə, yazıçının mövzuları xaotik anlatması (miflərdən başlayıb müstəmləkəçiliyə keçib kitabın son 5 səhifəsini dilə həsr etməsi?) baş qarışdırırdı və maksimum zövq almağıma mane olurdu. Amma bu mövzuda oxumağa və araşdırmağa davam edəcəm.

O autor confessa o seu desagrado perante a noção quase universal de que África é o continente esquecido. Pode até sê-lo, mas não é o único. Nos recônditos do mundo oriental, encontramos uma massa de terra austral tão calorosa quanto as terras quentes de Angola. Le Clézio, prémio Nobel 2008, aproveita a sua viagem pelos territórios longínquos de Vanatu, e Nova Caledónia para pensar abertamente sobre aquelas civilizações, desconhecidas à maioria dos ocidentais. Ao mesmo tempo, e por entre uma prosa cativante e atraente, desabafa o seu desagrado perante o dano causado pelos conquistadores, que em tempos escravizaram e denudaram um território tão imaculado. Em “Raga”, estamos na presença de uma obra breve, mas pujante, que leva o leitor a questionar o lugar do homem ocidental na narrativa geral da humanidade.

This years Nobel Prize in litterature winner and I was dying to read some of his works, I got this at my birthday (dec9) and finished reading it a second ago, I really liked it! It was a poetic documentary about the lost civilasation on the islands in the pacific ocean. a Great book about their history and the authors journey there, discussions and storytellings from the nativs and the cruel history of slave trading, rape, kidnapping and destrucions of their beautiful countries by the coloniests (does it spell like that?)

I would absolutely recomend this book and I really looking forward to more reading from Mr Le Clézio.

Ar fi prea mult de spus că LeClezio oferă o biografie a acestui continent "invizibil". Este vorba de un miros al mării, de o privire vegetală, un parfum al apei marine. Vegetaţia tropicală exotică îţi umple nările şi te acompaniază în această expediţie asupra istoriei şi legendelor locului.

I'm somehow disappointed by this book, it was interesting but also contained some boring ('poetic' if you want) paragraphs, which is a pitty given that it is quite short and written by someone who got a noble prize.. in any case, the story of the kind people who were destroyed by all sorts of invaders deserves to be known

Min första Le Clezio, och inte alls illa! Jag gillar uppgörelsen med forna tiders antropologer, och inte minst kolonisatörer, och det är en vacker och sorgsen bild av Melansien som målas upp. Däremot har jag lite svårt att få grepp om boken som sådan. Är det en essäsamling? Myter? Historia?

Invisibile, perché i primi viaggiatori che vi si sono avventurati non ne hanno colto la natura, e perché rimane ancor oggi un luogo senza riconoscimento internazionale, un passaggio, quasi un'assenza.

Un tempo, nel Sud dell'isola, vivevano un orco e un orchessa che divoravano i bambini. Un ragazzino fu catturato con i suoi fratelli e rinchiuso nella casa dell'orso. Per scappare inventò uno stratagemma. Raccontò all'orco di essere uno spirito e disse che per averne la prova bastava dar fuoco alla casa, e lui non sarebbe bruciato. L'orco appiccò il fuoco e il ragazzino si nascose con i fratelli in un buco che aveva scavato nel pavimento. Vedendoli illesi, l'orco volle imitarli e morì bruciato nella propria casa. Quando l'orchessa si accorse che il marito era morto cercò di acciuffare i bambini, ma il ragazzino le scivolò tra le gambe, afferrò una pietra rovente e gliela conficcò nella vagina. L'orchessa morì immediatamente. Da quella pietra nacque la prima pianta di kava.

Oggi ogni minimo fazzoletto di terra, dal cuore della selva amazzonica ai canyom ghiacciato dell'Antardide, è stato esaminato, fotografato, sezionato dall'occhio freddo del satellite. Se ancora esiste un segreto, è racchiuso nel profondo dell'anima, nella lunga successione di desideri, leggende, maschere e canti che si mescola al tempo, risorge e corre sulla pelle dei popoli come un lampo d'estate.

Non è ironico che i più bei testi scritti su queste isole - Tanna, Ambrym, Hiva Oa, Nuku Hiva - siano opera dei due uomini che si sono comportati peggio con gli abitanti?
Il primo, Robert James Fletcher, che visse a Tanna, si nutrì dei suoi frutti, bevve la sua acqua e violò il corpo di una ragazzina appena adolescente, da cui ebbe due figli prima di donarla a uno dei suoi servitori e scrivere Isles of Illusions.
Il secondo, Paul Gaugin, che aprofittò della conquista per appagare i propri desideri e immortalò nel suo Noa Noa, diario di un uomo perverso, l'immagine di una donna polinesiana ridotta a semplice oggetto, liscio, morbido, mansueto.
