When Going Through Hell...Don't Stop! A Survivor's Guide to Overcoming Anxiety and Clinical Depression --which describes the dramatic story of author and counselor Douglas Bloch's battle with, and ultimate recovery from, a life-threatening depressive illness. Although the managed care mental health system failed to provide him with adequate treatment, Mr. Bloch devised "a daily survival plan for living in hell" which he adopted until the power of spirit, acting through a group of committed, loving people, brought about his recovery. In addition to his compelling story, Mr. Bloch outlines a fourteen point "brain maintenance" program--a holistic approach to the treatment of anxiety and depression that diet; nutrition; exercise; stress-reduction; medication; vitamin, mineral, and herbal supplements; and the importance of creating strong bonds of social support (social isolation is both a cause of and a consequence of depression).
Douglas Bloch, M.A., is an author, teacher and counselor who writes and speaks on the topics of psychology, healing and spirituality. He is the author of ten books, including the inspirational self-help trilogy Words That Heal: Affirmations and Meditations for Daily Living; Listening to Your Inner Voice; and I Am With You Always, as well as the parenting book, The Power of Positive Talk. His newest works are Healing from Depression: 12 Weeks to a Better Mood and Words That Heal the Blues, which have been acclaimed as "a lifeline to healing" for those suffering from mental disorders and their families.
Douglas makes his home in Portland, Oregon where he facilitates ongoing support groups for people who suffer from depression and anxiety.
This is a great self-help book written by someone who has suffered from severe depression and anxiety. Bloch offers many suggestions that can be useful to those who are suffering as well as giving tips to those living with someone with someone who is suffering from depression or anxiety.
This is a great book for anyone struggeling with depression, axiety or other mood disorders. It is written by a psycolgist, but he has struggled with these issues himself. Very helpful.
When I was at my lowest point with depression and anxiety, I stumbled across this book in the self-help section at my library. It's mostly a personal narrative of the author's own struggles, and that helped me immensely at the time, because it reminded me that I'm not alone and that other people have survived the same thing I was going through. It's not the #1 book I'd hand to someone with depression and anxiety (that might be The Mindful Way through Depression: Freeing Yourself from Chronic Unhappiness or Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy), but it's a comfort on long dark nights when you're losing hope, and that kind of comfort is invaluable.
I first discovered Douglas Bloch through Youtube during a bad episode in college and now, years later, I cannot overstate just how much his videos have helped me through time and how grateful I am for all the work and helpful content he has provided. Not just the practical tools and solutions on healing from anxiety and depression or EDs but also simply his calming, understanding and reassuring demeanor which have always succeeded in making me feel more peaceful and at ease. I was so saddened to hear of his passing as I went back to his channel recently and I wanted to express again my gratitude in any way even though it will never fully encapsulate how much help I have received from his videos. This book contains some very useful prompts and tools that I am now using myself; you can use what resonates with you and leave behind what you don't necessarily connect with (for me, the religious part). An eternal thank you to Douglas Bloch and his entire team for their incredibly important work.
