Modern gothic in intensity.
Shades of Tanith Lee or Chelsea Quinn Yarbro.
Character dynamic is strong and this story has a sense of elegance to it that you rarely find nowadays. I am torn to wanting more of the character of Elise, and having her tale stop here. After all, that is what makes a legend, and Ms. Banks has created a woman that epitomizes what a legend is.
Highly recommended!

Coriander is the story of Elise van Tureen, and immortal woman who’s lived, loved, and played music for hundreds of years, and Carmilla Jones, an occult writer and magazine owner, who wants to write her life story. Don’t worry, it only sounds like a rip off of Anne Rice’s Interview With a Vampire.
Shifting back and forth effortlessly from modern day to Elise’s past this book is just what independent publishing should be about; getting new stories and exciting methods of telling them out there for the world and readers to discover and enjoy. Every new character brought into the story added a new level of mystery and enchantment. There are no boring supporting characters in this one; no pointless rambling; no page filler. In fact my biggest complaint with this one was that it wasn’t nearly long enough. I could have read on and on about Elise and the people and ghost who fill her world. But I happen to know for a fact Ms. Banks has a second book, and sequel to Coriander currently in the works. So, I will soon hopefully have this desire appeased.
