My kind of book! The author rides a mule and leads a pack mule from Clark Fork, Idaho to the ocean in Newport, Oregon. She takes back roads, old Indian and stagecoach trails and stops in tiny towns and interviews the old timers about the history of the area. Originally she meant to travel with a companion but her friend got hurt within the first three miles of the beginning of the trip! I'd love to do the same thing but I'd rather walk than ride a mule. Oh, and I'd rather not camp out at night. Alone. Jody has a lot of guts!
I really enjoyed this step-by-step travelogue. The author traveled by mule (2 mules) from Sand Point Idaho to Newport, Oregon in two months in 1984. It wasn't published until 2001. She met and interviewed elderly people in the small towns along the way, collecting Oregon history and tall tales. It was fun to check the maps as I followed her writing, aware of little towns I have never heard of. Anybody hear of Cecil or Harlan, Oregon. Look it up!
It's an interesting memoir. The writing is not professional or polished, but it's honest and straight forward. Thus summer I want to retrace her trip from Sand Point to Newport using as many of her backroads as possible.
