Gallons of Guinness, massive malarkey, vast views: Ireland embraces all these, and more. Over the centuries, this green and vibrant land has established itself as one of the world’s most captivating countries, forging a legacy of huge economic and artistic value. This entry in the Companion series sweeps through the Emerald Isle, offering a look at its history, culture, myth, and folklore. There are Irish jokes, old and new, and answers to such whimsical questions as why W.B. Yeats claimed he could see fairies; just how tricky it is to kiss the Blarney Stone; and which goddess tried to reclaim Ireland for the pagan gods.

humorous anthology of bits and bobs, quotes and clangers, fables and foibles! A real mix and mix of what’s it means to be irish. Funny throughout of course. Published in 2006, we could do with an newer edition.

“Dublin University is filled with the cream of the Irish race; Rich and thick.”
