A delightful, beautifully illustrated little book full of quotations and anecdotes about reading and books. Thoroughly enjoyed and will refer back to often for the short pick me up when wanting to feel thoroughly affirmed that this is not crazy, it is living a full life.
“That is part of the beauty of all literature. You discover that your longings are universal longings, that you’re not alone and isolated from anyone. You belong.”
A Passion for Books....when I received this little book from a friend in the mail, I was skeptical, thinking it just another sappy, saccharine little volume whose thoughts I could more effectively express myself. But I found instead a lovely book full of quotes and excerpts about a common love for books that inspired me anew with the realization of "how frugal is the chariot that bears a human soul!" Any lover of books would find this title a delight.
I used to decorate my classroom door with quotes about reading, so I thought maybe I'd already discovered most of the good quotes. Turns out I was wrong! Glaspey's book is brimming with hundreds of new little insights about reading from famous writers, readers, and thinkers. I treasure this book because it was given to me by a friend who is a lifetime ahead of me in reading. I admire her reading life and I feel so honored that she shared this little collection of quotes with me.
This is another book on "books" that took me completely by surprise! "Book love, my friend, is your pass to the greatest, the purest, and the most perfect pleasure" Anthony Trollope. In it's chapters it describes exactly how someone feels when they have a love of books. This book discusses things like the importance of where you read, how reading as a child influenced you, what it feels like to you to be in a bookstore or a library with all of those books, and happiness can come from books even in the worst of circumstances. It brings up the point that no matter what, books connect with people and destinations that you don't know. There are wonderful quotes by writers we all know throughout the book; C.S. Lewis, Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Emily Dickinson, William Shakespeare, Lisa May Alcott, and so many others. I have my own "passion for books" and this book showed me why.
This little book reminds us of all the joy that books bring. We buy them and neglect them. We read them, touch them, turn their pages while letting our eyes glance at the fonts. We share them, we recommend them. Some, ban them, and are willingly deprived of these joys. Filled with quotes and memories, the author shares their love affair with books and makes us feel that familiar magic on every page.
Book about books! The format was enjoyable with an essay on several topics related to books (of course) and then many quotes from other writers, also related to that topic. Glaspey mentions so many specific books that, if I’d already read them, brought back the pleasure of the reading experience or, if not, were added to my To Be Read list.
I have been reading this book throughout the year. Picking it up and reading a chapter, a page. It is short essays regarding books and why we read them. Their importance to educate, amuse, give solace and the capacity to be a great friend. The places we find books and their format is also examined. And finally a preponderance of quotes related to books and reading. A nice small tome to have in one's library to remind readers why we read.
