In 1936 Jean Cocteau and his male companion decide to try and emulate the feat described in the book by Jules Verne and travel around the world in 80 days. Thinking it would be a piece of cake, they quickly find out that fiction is easier than fact.Eschewing the more touristy attractions, they spend most of their time in the seamier districts of the cities they visit, spending time in brothels, opium dens etc.

Cocteau was a man of many talents, but at heart he was a poet and this shines through in this book as well, as it is brilliantly written. Very entertaining and highly recommended.

Jean Cocteau traveling in style. When a Dandy travels watch out! The world according to Cocteau is not like any world that we live in. No way does this man deal with subway maps!

Beautifully painted pictures from Cocteau's around the world trip, in 1930's. He's in a hurry, so the descriptions are touristy in a way that they don't go too deep into the places, peoples and customs. Especially liked the way he describes the way of living in Asia. Like many travelers, Cocteau seems to be overwhelmed by everything new he sees and so the home (Paris, Europe, Western civilization...) pales in comparison. Even the cruelties he sees in Asia seem mystical and beautiful to his eyes. Liked the book.
