Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.
Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.
Words cannot describe how much I hate Team 7's mini-soap opera subplot. It's simply not the kind of shit I'd like to see twice. And I just did. What happened in the first third of this volume mirrors almost exactly what's going to happen at the end of the series: Sakura is reduced to a damsel in distress who constantly needs a saving hand from her male team members (while a certain shell of a character keeps abusing her), Kakashi talks big but ends up being useless, while Sasuke and Naruto would rather run at each other with killing intent than just sit down and act like normal human beings. Even Tobi and Zetsu are here. It's so ridiculously bad. Also, Kabuto's new design is so wacky and for what?
Tsunade finally waking up from her coma and the deeper look at Naruto's suppressed feelings as a Jinchuriki are the only reasons I'm giving this volume one extra star.
The EMOTIONS in this volume oh my lord! Sasuke and Naruto and Sakura are truly the heart of this series and sometimes the story remembers that. And when it does oh WOW it hits. We also get some shenanigans with Kabuto and a new arc with Naruto and Killer Bee!
We're finally getting somewhere. This volume is clunky and heavy with exposition, and uneven in terms of mood, but at least we've got some anchor points for the upcoming arc. Good to see Naruto realizing some hard truths about himself and his former best friend, and I'm looking forward to what will surely be a fight of epic proportions. Sakura shows some real growth here, and good for her! That takes some guts, and I'm happy Kishimoto finally decided to give her some agency.
Kabuto's angle is an interesting one, and I'm quite intrigued by what his motivation really is. Alternatively, I'm reading way too much into a side character who just knows too much for his own good ;).
I was hoping for a good fight between Sasuke and Naruto, but I guess it's a little too early for that. Raikage called for an allied summit of the Allied Shinobi Force. Naruto met the Eight Tails and started his training yet again.

Its a fun volume as we focus on the aftermath of the previous volume, everyone prepares for the fourth shinobi world war, getting their houses and army in order and preparing for the big things to come. Its epic how it comes about. Naruto and Killer Bee ae sealed on an island kinda and thats where it seems the prophecy he gained from the giant frog will come to pass, Naruto faces his darker self, and we learn more about the nature of Hachibi and Killer Bee and a fun tale of friendship of Moroi and the latter and how compassionate he is. Its a fun issue and seems like soon Naruto may control the Kyuubi aka Kurama inside him with training from Killer Bee!

This volume is pretty much a foundation that sets up the the Great Ninja War but also sets up to what will be one of the greatest battles ever fought, Naruto vs. Sasuke (that won't happen till much later)!! Anywho, Naruto finally meets up with Bee and Kabuto creates an alliance with Madara. The next volume though is going to wreck my emotions to no end!!!
Once upon a time, the spirit of an evil Nine Tailed Fox wreaked havoc on Konohagakure; the Village Hidden in the Leaves, killing hundreds of honorable ninja in the skirmish and leaving many children without homes or parents. The Fourth Hokage (leader of the village) unleashes a forbidden jutsu (magic spell/ninja ability) to seal the spirit of the evil fox into the body of a newborn baby named Naruto at the cost of his own life. He did this in the hopes that the boy could one day learn to master the power of the demonic spirit and use it to protect the village and become a great hero of the people.
Unknown to the citizens of the Leaf, the Nine Tailed Fox was being controlled by an even more powerful adversary, a legendary rogue ninja that plans to wage war against the entire world from the shadows. The identity of the mysterious ninja that attacked the Leaf Village using the Nine Tails died with the Fourth Hokage, and he used what remained of his life to gift Naruto with the power of one day being able to stop this evil ninja and a clan of outlawed S-rank criminals called the Akatsuki from committing mass genocide against the many hidden villages and clans of the world.
Because of the evil spirit sealed inside him, Naruto grew up hated by the other children of the village because they believe him and the Nine Tails to be one and the same. They believe he’s a ticking time bomb waiting to go off, waiting for the perfect moment to kill them all just like the Nine Tails killed their parents and families. Shunned, dehumanized and treated like dirt, Naruto vows to become the greatest hokage the world has ever seen so that he can receive the love and acknowledgement he never got as a child.
On top of the Nine Tails power and the will to never quit, Naruto also possesses the uncanny ability to turn everyone he meets into a potential comrade. He brings out the best in his peers and tries his hardest to make his enemies see the errors of their ways. He disobeys the rules and ignores cultural traditions to try and make changes to the world and break the eternal cycle of war and hatred through his own methods. His determination is infectious to friend and foe alike. He earns himself the respect he deserves by overcoming one impossible obstacle at a time.
Naruto encounters many fascinating and terrifying ninja over the course of his journey to become hokage. Among them are Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto’s best friend and rival who is driven by the vengeful lust to murder his elder brother after he wiped out their own clan in cold blood. Sasuke warms up to Naruto, but his hatred and trauma are dangerous forces that threaten to break his moral code as a ninja and destroy his reputation among his peers.
Kakashi Hatake is a notorious copycat ninja that survived one of the most brutal and devastating wars in history as well as the Nine Tails attack on the Leaf Village. He becomes Naruto and Sasuke’s mentor and teaches them a great number of valuable lessons about surviving in the dangerous world of rogue ninja, bloodthirsty assassins and clans ruled by corruption.
Jiraiya is a perverted yet wise sage who taught the Fourth Hokage everything he knew and he’s regarded as a god among shinobi that’s famous for his heroic actions in the second great ninja war. He takes an interest in Naruto and raises him as a father figure to carry on the legacy of the Fourth Hokage to prepare him for the many dangerous people that want to use his power for their own nefarious purposes.
The Akatsuki is one such group of wicked ninja. Among them are Sasuke’s brother Itachi who murdered his clan and possesses many dangerous techniques involving illusions, psychological torture and elemental manipulation. Sasori who controls poisonous puppets with magical threads, Orochimaru who mastered the forbidden arts of reanimation and quasi-immortality, Deidara who fights from afar using detonating clay and many other deadly foes.
The entire series chronicles Naruto and his fellow ninja comrades growing through countless trials and tragedies. There are hundreds of unique jutsus, clans, and techniques which lead to some very intense, creative and strategic battles between skilled ninja with diverse abilities that don’t always match up evenly. There are clan based abilities such as the Aburame clan’s ability to control insects, the Yamanaka clan’s ability to jump into other people’s minds and control their bodies and the Inuzuka clan’s ability to bond with wolves that learn to mimic their master’s battle skills. Then there’s ocular genetic abilities such as the sharingan which allows the user to create psychological illusions, copy their enemy’s abilities and manipulate elemental energy. The byakugan allows the user to read their enemies vital points and detect their spiritual energy from faraway. The rinnegan grants control over space and gravity and so on.
On top of having countless unique abilities, nearly every character has a tragic backstory that makes them sympathetic and relatable, even the nastiest of the villains have well-explored reasons for following the paths they do and becoming the way they are. One of my favorite aspects of the series is how well it explores the physical, emotional and psychological effects war can have on society and culture as well as the survivors and future generations that are forced to live in them. How it breeds racism and cultural disputes, how it inspires hatred in orphaned children and war veterans robbed of their homes toward foreign nations, as well as how this eventually leads to further death, war, poverty and destruction. Learning to forgive the ones you hate to prevent further conflict and damaging the world for future generations even further is a major theme throughout the story.
Being a massive 700 chapter series, it’s not too surprising that there’s some plot holes and consistency issues. A rule might be stated regarding the requirements and usage of a certain jutsu or ability only for that rule to be repeatedly broken 400 chapters later. Sometimes the characters and rules contradict themselves, sometimes the chronology of certain events and historical facts don’t match up perfectly, the lore and general backstory go through several retcons that change the philosophy and power scaling of the characters and the scope of world-building; the final arc especially drags on and breaks a lot of the logic and rules that the story spent the whole series setting up, etc...
Naruto’s far from perfect, but I remember it very fondly for being one of the first series that introduced me to things like manga and Japanese entertainment in general. It was one of those childhood classics like Dragon Ball, Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin. The series grew up with me and I can’t help but feel grateful to it for introducing me to hundreds of other franchises that I’m still a huge fan of to this day and I continue to find many new ones on the regular. Naruto's journey from a clownish, disrespected outcast into a talented, well-loved and admired hero is a memorable one.
"Put away that eye inferior shinobi. You are not Uchiha." God Sasuke, this is why people don't like you. He's just so damn pretentious. He's definitely the Draco, but Sasuke's way more than Draco ever got to be. He truly has his own story. As Kakshi points out, Sasuke is a product of their times, a consequence of their shinobi world. It creates heroes and villains and a lot of damaged kids bearing burdens that aren't theirs.
After Kakshi's failed attempt at sweet talking Sasuke, the real expert arrives to deliver a new sermon. Where he decides to bear on everyone's sins- the sins that have all led to the state of Sasuke's and his affairs. The hero makes his grand entrance. An amazing one. The anatomy of this scene. Sasuke's dead eyes turning to shock when Naruto arrives, the blade meant for Sasuke meant for Sakura nicking Naruro instead, "Naruto...Naruto." Here he is.
The unfeeling Sasuke who left behind team 7, who espouses a world without bonds where he believes his family can finally be free, comes face to face with the one who bonds him so tightly he can't help but break. His shock quickly turns to anger when Naruto says he gets it, because he can't let him in. He's got to remind him he's an outsider and Sasuke's the loner with a plan. Plans to kill everyone, especially Naruto.
Naruto knows, despite Kakashi wanting to hide it from him, that it's the world that made Sasuke like this. Sasuke's just a boy like him who's been wronged. Their roles could have been reversed. Naruto wanted to kill them all just like Sasuke. But Sasuke and Iruka gave him something else to make of himself. He focused on that instead. The hatred filled monster they told him he was, he turned that kid into Uchiha Sasuke's rival. He's his goal. Naruto really admitted to making Sasuke his entire personality. Sasuke looks so done in this scene but Naruto looks so happy to talk to him, to reveal to him himself.
"I'm happy I knew you" the fact that this is past tense, he truly did believe they were going to die together. Sasuke's not as good with his words, his facial expressions are more where he shines. "...or be killed by me and just known as a loser" could have been a bit punchier. It fell a bit flat after Naruto's glorious display of devotion.
The passion on both sides, the anger, torment, determination and that clash! Really is one of my all time favourite scenes in a story.
"No matter what you say I'm not changing...sever our bond." Then why are you still listening? You made your allies wait just because Naruto said he had something more to say. Why did you want to listen Sasuke? Maybe you should ask yourself who you are to Naruto, what do you want?
"Sasuke...do you remember...what you said to me long ago at the final valley?"
"Sasuke...can you tell what I'm thinking too...? Read MY thoughts?"
"You see right? That if you and I fight... we die."
"Until that day, you need to keep your hate in check...and throw it all at me then."
"I'm the only one who can handle all that hate! Only I can fulfil that duty!"
"I bear the burden of your hate and I'll die with you."
"Because you're my friend!!"
Kishimoto outdid himself with this one. I will never forget these lines. This impassioned effort by the boy who spent his life bearing the hate of an entire village's manic grief from an attack he had no part in. His self-sacrifice in taking on another's hate because he knows, who else has grown accustomed to such a vast hatred, a hatred created by their very world. He thinks of it as a duty. This poor boy's really just going to take on everything and thinks he can eradicate it from this world with his death? Even Sasuke can't keep his usual carefully maintained stoicism in the face if this.
He's been the hated one. One person's, Iruka's, love was enough of a hand hold to pull him out of hell. So he'll be that for Sasuke.
He knew it was going to take alot to understand Sasuke, but he thinks in death when they are no longer Jinchuriki and Uchiha is when they will be free. But this is who you are, and you should both be loved not in spite of it.
Sasuke actually changed his plans because of this "lecture." That's how you know it's one of the best.
"You'll be the first one I'll kill." "I'll be waiting for you...Sasuke." "I'll crush Naruto with everything I've got. I'll eradicate him completely." Enemies to....
She did fail in the end but I still have to commend that she wanted to and planned to take on the burden, it's all about burdens in this volume, from Kakashi and Naruto. "I thought I was past all this." Girl, so did we. All she can do is leave it to Naruto and Sasuke. I'm so sorry you were written like this.
This is the final point before the whole war arc begins. 20 volumes of it.
It starts with a meeting and some meditation. Naruto must face his true self, that dark self that struggles with accepting his new found fame after everything the village put him through. Once we meet this guy, he pops up in Naruto with intrusive thoughts when he hears the story of Motoi and Bee. I actually wish we had seen more of these thoughts in Naruto. He doesn't like thinking, maybe because the hater comes out when he does.
I've always liked Bee, even if he's meant to be annoying. He decided to take pride in himself and even added self-expression. Naruto was loud and bratty to get people to acknowledge his existence, Gaara was violent to force the existence people were trying to erase onto them and Bee chose music as his way to express.
I liked the Motoi and Bee story I think, but I feel like there was more to it in the anime because right now it seems it just gets resolved with a brush of Bee's shoulders. I need some more heart to heart to believe they truly resolved anything.
Oh and Kabuto's back. He's just decided to live as Orochimaru so he's got to have Sasuke. Fan behaviour.
This volume was hard on me. Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke reunited, with Sakura trying to assassinate her flame and Naruto throwing down the gauntlet to his best friend. It easily gave me chills.
It was over too soon though.
At least we can move on to another stage of the story and we all know that Naruto has to grow yet stronger if he's ever going to keep up with that monster Sasuke. Fortunately, the story is conspiring to have him find a new teacher! Woo!
I admit, I always liked the demon fox, and wondered when the hell Naruto would ever master him. We're on our way.
I rate this 2.5 stars because Sasuke's here and team 7 Sasuke drama again, ugh😒
I liked the second half of this book but the first few chapters were such a chore to get through that I even went to the wikia and just read the summaries for two of those chapters because I just couldn't continue reading until that drama was over, it was really annoying. Why do you like to torture us like this, Kishimoto? This better not happen again. In the previous volumes I wasn't sure how I felt about Naruto but after this volume, I find him really annoying. He still considers Sasuke a friend and acts like he was the first kid who became his friend, which is so not true! Stop forgetting about the best secondary character in this series! Shikamaru Nara, he's so underrated that even the mangaka forgot that him and Choji were Naruto's first friends because they didn't care what others were saying and Shikamaru's dad told him to use his own judgment. Before Naruto's precious team 7, he already had a few people who didn't hate him: Iruka sensei, third Hokage, Konohomaru, Shikamaru, Choji and Hinata (I know he didn't know that looked up to him but still), so Sasuke was definitely NOT his first friend, they weren't even friends for very long. I'm so tired of these lies and of the mangako constantly forgetting about the best boy in this series (Shikamaru).
Anyways, I am also getting annoyed with Sakura. I have always defended her but in this case, she was useless. She acts like she has a big plan and is going to get things done but she ends up not being able to go through with it because for reasons I can't comprehend, she still loves this shell of a person?🤷♀️ And then Naruto has to save her when Sasuke tries to kill her. What the hell Sakura and more importantly, Kishimoto!? She did so well against Sasuri what happened to all that training and geniusness. At least try to dodge when an evil maniac is trying to kill you. This reminded me of my frustrations with Kagome Higurashi from Inuyasha. She would always stand there yelling "Inuyasha!" Instead of jumping out of the way, although she has a good excuse, which is that she's not a trained fighter while Sakura is, so she has no excuse for not doing anything in this volume. I still have faith in her because she isn't completely useless like those haters think (they clearly forgot the beginning of part 2/ Shippuden). She fought against Sasori and was the only person to create an antidote against his poison, she saved Kankoro's life and she took charge of taking care of the wounded during the Pain attack. So she's definitely NOT useless but it does seem that she's more useful as a healer than a fighter even though in the beginning of part 2 it sure seemed like she had improved a lot and that she would be involved in some of the fights in the future. So much potential lost😔 Yeah I still have 20 volumes left to read but a war is about to happen and I don't think she's going to get much of a spotlight. While I don't hate her, I also don't love her either. There aren't many great female characters in this series, but my favourites are definitely Tsunade and Temari.
The only team 7 member I can stand after reading this volume is Kakashi but even he annoys me a little because he just goes along with everything Naruto says when it comes to Sasuke. I know Naruto wouldn't listen if he told him to stop this stupidity but it still annoys me. Other than that, I love Kakashi.
This "review" is mostly a rant but I needed to express my hatred for wo-is-me-an-nothing-matters-except-my stupid-revenge Sasuke and beyond annoying and naive Naruto drama again. Let's hope I don't need to do that again.
Looking at the cover vol. 53 seems like it might interesting. Hopefully things get good again. It's been pretty annoying these past few volumes.
Sasuke isn’t even done letting go of the kunai when Naruto shows up and grabs Sakura HAHAHA he was so mad
When Karin has Sakura crying over her while healing she started crying too
Naruto, again, claiming that him and Sasuke are the same. I thought we were done with this bullshit wtf.
Naruto to Sasuke: “Once we really understand each other, your hatred will go away. I’ll bear the burden of your hate, and I’ll die with you!” “You see, right? That if you and I fight, we’ll die.” “If you invade Konoha, I will fight you. Until that day, you need to keep your hate in check and throw it all at me then. I’m the only one who can handle all that hate! Only I can fulfill that duty!”
It’s weird because Sasuke WANTS to talk to Naruto. So far as to tell Madara to wait for the teleportation jutsu, so that he can hear the rest of what Naruto says.
Naruto gives Sasuke the longest lecture and Sasuke wants to hear it. WHY?! He barely says anything back except for “no matter what you say, I’m going to kill Konoha and you along with it.” And… Sasuke: “What is it with you? What do you want?! Why do you keep messing in my business!” Naruto: “It’s because you’re my friend!” “I haven’t given up on you yet!” and he says nothing.
Sasuke can barely see Naruto after the battle because his eyes are “losing their light.” He actually says to Naruto, “I’ll talk to you later.” WHY
Have I misunderstood Sasuke??
IM SO SICK OF NARUTO’S FRIENDS TALKING TO HIM ABOUT SASUKE. Enough please. The readers get the fucking point. They want to get Sasuke because he’s a criminal, Naruto says no and that he’ll deal with it himself.
Kabuto is Orochimaru now and he should be dead or rot in jail forever
OMG Kabuto doing EDOTENSEI REANIMATION …!
Naruto and Bee are sent to be hid away for the war since they are the targets of that war. The Akatsuki want Naruto and Bee so they can revive 10-tails.
We heard some of Bee’s backstory.
We saw Bee in full Biju form.
Naruto meets the 8-tails, looking for a way to help him control his Biju, he asks Bee for help.
Waterfall of truth.
Bee’s rapping is going to kill me though.
Kisame is hiding in Samehada. Bee is carrying Samehada around on his back.
We found out Zetsu can touch people and recreate that chakra. Almost as if it were a clone.
Naruto has a frog with the key to his belly seal shoved in his mouth. Naruto got a prophecy.
An allied Shinobi military has been confirmed by the Daimyo’s and is now in progress. Preparations for the war are set into full gear.
IM SO READY FOR THE WAR. THE FIGHTING IS AWESOME. Let’s gooo
Riuscirà Sakura a incontrare Sasuke? Riuscirà ad attuare il suo piano per il bene del villaggio, oppure il suo cuore vacillerà? Riusciranno Kakashi e Naruto a raggiungere Sakura in tempo? . Voto: 5/5″
Sakura tries to make a tough decision to let go of her feelings for Sasuke but can’t eventually force herself to kill him. Kakashi wants to take responsibility of letting Sasuke get consumed by hate and letting his team get diverged.
Naruto confronts Sasuke after finally truly understanding his hate and reasoning for his horrible actions. It seems at this point that Naruto is the only person who doesn’t want to give up on Sasuke. So during their conversation Naruto declares that he will fight Sasuke in the future and is willing to bear all his hate and die with him.
I think that Sasuke is a bit taken aback by this but his revenge is still more important for him at this point. He also gets Itachi’s eyes after going nearly blind for using his mangekyoo too much against Danzo.
Very solid volume and it sets up the final battle between Naruro and Sasuke nicely.

Naruto and Sasuke finally come to blows, but it's used to establish motivations as we enter the war arc. Nothing too big comes out of it. We get the ninja alliance setting up for the war, Tobi getting some new tools to set up for the war, and Naruto doing some exposition-heavy deep dive on Bee so he can learn how to be a better jinchuriki. Lots of talking, very little action, and I'm disappointed that after an entire arc setting up Sasuke we're now entering a new arc setting up everything else for the next arc. We are getting some defining character moments, though, in how Naruto approaches situations now that he's not just some dumb kid but the focus of a world war.
