Type 1 Diabetes: A Guide for Children, Adolescents, Young Adults--and Their Caregivers, Third Edition

Rate this book
Living with type 1 diabetes requires intensive, nonstop daily management, week after week, year after year. This means that young people with type 1 and their parents have to become experts on their own condition—even better informed than the average doctor—and able to self-manage its daily demands. The Type 1 Diabetes Book is the most authoritative book ever published on the condition and will become the one book that every young person with type 1 diabetes will need to own. “In this book,” writes author Dr. Ragnar Hanas, “I speak directly, all the time, to you, the person with diabetes. The topics covered range from how your body works to sweets, treats, and ice cream; from insulin injection technique to long-term complications; and any number of subjects in between. With this book at your side, you can easily and quickly get to know about diabetes and how to handle it with confidence in all the different situations that life has to offer.” With 40 chapters, 430 graphs and illustrations, 168 medical terms explained, and 813 references to articles and journals, no other book available on this subject comes remotely close to the quality or amount of comprehensive information offered here.

My teenage son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes two weeks before his seventeenth birthday. We have gone from a family without any real worries - a family who would eat Dominos pizza on a Saturday night, munch chocolate together whilst watching television, indulge at our local ice cream parlour if and when we fancied it - to a family who counts and logs carbs, weighs food, collects four page prescriptions in huge bags from the chemist, monitors blood glucose every couple of hours and injects insulin sometimes ten times a day. It's been a huge and overwhelming change and one we are still getting our heads around three weeks on.

The most recent version of this book was recommended to me by my son's paediatrician and it has been a godsend. There is so much information being fired at you with a new diagnosis that its hard to keep track of everything. This book allows me to digest it all slowly, in peace and I can go back to parts that are more complex or skip forward to bits that are particularly relevant.

If you are newly diagnosed, I highly recommend it.

This is written for Type 1 diabetes and I have Type 2 and it is written for children to read. But it was still very informative in how the body breaks down food into energy and fat, how carbohydrates are processed and how exercise changes the amount of sugar in the blood stream. I would definitely recommend this to caregivers and children with Type 1 diabetes. And to people with Type 2 to learn a bit more about this devastating disease.

Since I am a pediatric endocrinologist, I thought it was a book I should read. The book contains information suitable for all levels, from someone who has no knowledge of diabetes to someone who has just been diagnosed with diabetes to a professional on the subject. A book that will benefit people with type 1 diabetes, their relatives and professionals. Do not hesitate to read. Read and support people with type 1 diabetes.

Awesome reference! This is going to be an indispensible book to have onour shelves over the years. I like the small specific sections on things like dealing with ketones, schedule changes and hypoglycemic awareness. You don't have to read a whole chapter or get a mini-lecture on the endocrine system to get an answer to a question.

Najlepsza książka o cukrzycy typu I dostępna w Polsce.

I think this is a great book for newly diagnosed - very much set up for children/adolescents with a few good things for young adults (especially career choice wise) and good for caregivers for the children/adolescents.
