The Second Lady Silverwood #1

The Second Lady Silverwood

Rate this book
Sir Benedict Silverwood needs a new wife, an heir and a mother for his young daughter, but he can’t envisage any of the eligible young debutantes taking the place of his late wife. Then Kate Moreton, the granddaughter of a friend, an impoverished spinster and Italian teacher, is suggested and what seems at first an outlandish idea grows on him, alongside his attraction to Kate.

Kate has been hopelessly in love with Benedict for years so the idea of marriage to him is appalling, considering he doesn’t reciprocate her feelings, but also so very tempting…

When Kate steps into her new life as Benedict’s wife, sparks fly, but as it becomes clear that there are incendiary secrets that threaten their fragile new life together, the question is whether Benedict will be able to love and trust the second Lady Silverwood?

DNF at 56%. I so wanted to love this book. The cover is gorgeous, and the first 15% was genuinely promising - but it all went downhill from there.

Where do I begin? The glowing reviews and comparisons are completely misleading. “Heyer with steam”? Really? The prose is extremely modern—which, on the bright side, makes it easy to read—but it’s definitely not reminiscent of Heyer. Over time, the dialogue becomes jarring—stiff, awkward, and unnatural. No one talks like that.

And while I enjoy smut as much as the next reader, the love scenes here felt more like a checklist of positions than anything truly sensual. There’s no emotional or sexual buildup. Once the couple marries, it's suddenly boom—Kate, the virginal spinster, turns into a seasoned lover overnight. Where’s the tension? The longing? The emotional payoff that makes romance so satisfying?

If you want well-done love scenes in historical romance, read Jo Goodman. Her books have proper buildup, palpable sexual tension, and when the moment finally comes - woof. It’s powerful because it’s earned.

I will say this: the descriptions do place you in the Regency era quite well. But overall, there are just so many things that do not work.

It’s tough for me to find modern historical romance authors who really resonate with me. I suppose I’m not the intended audience for this book. Some readers might enjoy it—your mileage may vary.

Headlines:
A relationship built on tragedy
All the longings

This debut was incredibly easy to get into, romp through and like. Kate was a humble characters with low expectations on life and she had an authenticity that brought you over to her team immediately. Her character went from lacking self-belief to a credible increasing confidence in wanting things for herself.

"What do you say...Are you brave enough, or do you mean to spend the rest of your life wondering what might have been?"

Benedict was closed off but on a mission to find a wife for lots of practical reasons. His character took longer to trust but he did show why he was worth hanging around for. Benedict's whole family were likeable, especially the Dowager and Lucy.

There was a really interesting and later developing plot line that really caught my attention. It brought focus onto some of the earlier trust and emotional issues that had arisen. The Second Lady Silverwood packed a lot of heat into the middle portion of the book and Kate was very open to whatever Benedict suggested. I'm not sure how realistic I felt this was but I tried to just roll with it. Nevertheless, I found myself here for the emotional connection and the promise of mutual affections. Overall, it was a rather pleasant read.

Thank you to Allison & Busby for the review copy.

A second chance romance with a twist. Acceptance, love and wickedness all rolled up satisfactorily. The bedroom antics are spicy and yet appropriate. I loved the grandmothers and grandfather.

Thanks to the author and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book.

A second chance romance set in the regency period with a good bit of steam thrown in, what’s not to love?

Benedict Silverwood has had his share of tragedy having being wounded in battle and losing his wife, brother and sister in law. His heart is wounded however he requires a mother for his young daughter Lucy. Having not found anyone suitable when attending the season in London he returns to the family home not knowing the answer to all his problems is going to be presented to him.

The Dowager Lady Silverwood presents the idea that Kate Moreton who is living with her grandfather and is tutoring Lucy in Italian would be a perfect solution. Kate already has formed a close bond with Lucy and therefore could be known to treat her well.

When the Dowager presents the idea to Kate, she is taken aback. Having developed feelings for Benedict 7 years previously at her season, she never thought she would be in this position. After considering things she decides that she would take the chance and accept the proposal.

Kate is a strong and brave character who has a sensible head on her shoulders and isn’t afraid to go all in. Benedict is also sensible and throughout the story we see him grow, develop and realise that he has feelings for Kate.

I really enjoyed this story and how it unfolded. I hope to read more books by Emma Orchard in the future.

This is my first book of Emmas's and I am glad that I took the chance to read and review this book.
I don't have a lot of experience of regency romance, only really having previously read the first in the Brigerton series. This book was a joy to read for me.

Kate has long admired the handsome Benedict Silverwood, however on her debut season, it became clear quickly he had eyes for only one, who would then go on to become his wife, the lovely Vanessa. Kate does not marry and continues to turn down suitors over the years where she finds herself 25 and single. She ends up being a teacher for the child of Benedict - Lucy who has found herself without a mother as a number of tragic and unknown events has led to Benedict being widowed. It is then suggested that Kate should marry Benedict, he is looking for an heir and company and she is left with a choice to make - can she marry the man she loves without him loving her back?

Ok, so. I really couldn't fault this book at all, not only did I learn some new words "nuncheon", I really enjoyed the chatacter of Kate and how she was very much true to herself and what she wanted. She didn't feel that she needed to settle and she was not afraid to say and do exactly what she thought. Her inner confidence and lack of dramatics was so refreshing as so many of these stories have characters who are constantly jumping to wrong conclusions and behaving ridiculously thus. She was also a woman who liked to enjoy herself and find her pleasure, which I found also refreshing - infact many of the women in the story spoke frankly of subjects which were often seen as taboo.

The story also has some hidden secrets, drama and a lot to unravel through the story. all in all a really enjoyable read.

The wee book lady. xx

‘The Second Lady Silverwood’ by Emma Orchard is a richly imagined, impressively researched regency novel, full of passion and romance. The story plunges the reader into the lives of two unforgettable characters, the dashingly attractive yet lovelorn Benedict Silverwood, and Kate Moreton, the statuesque, shy young woman from a noble Italian family fallen on hard times.

Kate has loved Benedict from afar for a long time, but when at last her fortunes change and she finds herself his second wife, the fun really starts! Benedict and Kate’s passionate relationship sizzles on the page, and the reader is swept along at a romping pace.

Emma Orchard is clearly an expert when it comes to painting vivid scenes, creating authentic storylines, and inventing fully rounded characters.

This was my first introduction to the genre, and it thrilled from the first line to the last.

I read this book from NetGalley in exchange for a fair and honest review

Seven years ago, when she was only 18 and on her first season, Kate fell in love with the younger brother of Lord Silverwood, a young soldier named Benedict. They danced together at several soirées but as soon as he set eyes on the diamond of the season, Vanessa Ansell, he lost his heart to her and forgot about Kate completely.

Now, Ben is returning from fighting Napoleon in Spain and France. His mother is of fragile health and his old governess should have retired ages ago, it isn’t fair for the two women that they’d have to look after his daughter Lucy, a child of 6 who lost her mother when she was very little. But Benedict not only lost Vanessa, around the same time, his older brother died with his wife and son in a carriage accident, leaving Ben with the responsibility of being the new Lord Silverwood, baronet and magistrate.

There is a vicar in the village nearby who lives in reduced circumstances and who is so old and is so ill that he could die any day now. He lives with the sole company of his daughter’s daughter, a woman of 25 who has been in love with Ben for seven years. That woman, of course, is Kate. When her grandfather dies she would have to decide what to do with her life, she could seek employ as a governess or she could go to her late father’s mother, an Italian noblewoman who now lives in Parma. For the time being she teaches little Lucy the language and and has become friends with Ben’s mother. The old woman has guessed Kate’s feelings for her son and is set on seeing them married, for the young woman already loves Lucy and thinks that she will be a good mother to her, but also she will be able to bear him an heir. Of course she manages to convince Benedict who doesn’t really remember having met Kate all those years ago, but is attracted to her and he proposes. Kate knows he won’t love her, but she will have the love of Lucy and the children they might have together, and she says yes.

I was, at first, surprised by the style of writing chosen by Emma Orchard. It follows the path of writers like Georgette Heyer who used to imitate, but not quite, the style of writing of the past. The vocabulary, the expressions and turns of phrase, it all reminds me of Jane Austen, the Brontës and all of the classics. It is rather unusual to find such language nowadays as even the historical romances are usually written in a modern style, even if the characters have a 19th century speech. It took me a few pages to find my footing but once I did, I focused my attention on the story so much that I could not stop reading. In that regard, the book is a page turner.

Ben’s and Kate’s story is delightfully slow paced. Most of the book is actually a collection of sitting room and tea set scenes and above all, family scenes, for this is a very important aspect of the story and particularly of both the hero and the heroine, they are very much attached to their respective families and on amicable terms with each other’s at the same time. As a result, we get a very cosy, very heartwarming and charming Cinderella-ish tale set in the English countryside.

But do not be mistaken, despite what the writing choices may lead you to think, this is a very steamy book. Benedict is powerfully attracted to Kate, and she is so in love with him. They barely can take their hands off of each other. The intimacy between them is one of learning and exploration of their wants, their desires and their own body responses. But they never speak of love and Kate is afraid of telling him her feelings in case she scares him away. And, in a manner of speaking, the spirit of Vanessa still lingers.

What a charming love story!

An engaging and refreshing romance. Benedict and Kate are such beautifully drawn, passionate characters, who are physically and emotionally attracted - Benedict’s desire for Kate is transparent soon after they meet for the second time, and Kate has been in love with Benedict for seven years; however, after their marriage, their relationship grows and broadens.

The book is well written in the glorious style of Georgette Heyer, with the distinctive language and idioms of a bygone era. Unlike Georgette Heyer books there are some steamy sections - but these are not too overdone or coarse.

I am so pleased that I’ve discovered Emma Orchard, this is the first of her books I have read and it was unputdownable. I’ll certainly be seeking out more of her excellent books.

I must admit that I do not usually read Regency romances but I decided to give this one a go attracted by the cover and the description. I was not disappointed and will definitely look out for further books by Emma Orchard.
If you are expecting a demure romantic novel I would suggest you change your expectations as this is more of a raunchy romp!
Kate Moreton is a penniless orphan, living with her ailing grandfather, pining after Benedict Silverwood whom she met 7 years earlier whilst doing the season in London. He has subsequently married and then become a widower, bringing up his young daughter alone with the help of his elderly mother.
When she has the opportunity to teach Italian to his daughter at the behest of the Dowager, his mother, she jumps at the chance and begins to forge a relationship with young Lucy and the Dowager herself who looks after Lucy whilst Benedict is absent. There is she, thinks , little harm in that, particularly as meeting him again seems a remote possibility.
However Ben returns home and subsequently, encouraged by his mother, makes Kate an offer. He needs a second wife and a mother for his daughter- Kate is a perfect solution, as he has not managed to find anyone else in London, even with his sister’s help.
Kate is not sure what she should do- she cannot reveal her true feelings and although she would love to be the Second Lady Silverwood, could she bear to be in a marriage where her husband does not love her, forever wondering about her predecessor!
She will be in a difficult situation, almost the same one that Daphne Du Maurier’s heroine, Rebecca finds herself- married to a man she really knows little about and immensely curious about her predecessor.
This was a romantic read which definitely lifted me from the dreary and cold March weather and transported me to Regency England. I really liked the characters and it made me aware that peoples’ feelings are the same, whatever century they live in.
Kate is a very modern and intelligent heroine, despite the constraints of her position as an early nineteenth century woman. Ben is a perfect hero- a brave soldier with a tragic past who is learning to love again.
This is a very modern take on the regency romance- do not expect a meek and modest female protagonist in Kate for that is not what she is!
The language is definitely nineteenth century and I even learnt a few new words such as “nuncheon”- at first I thought this was a typo!
All in all an enjoyable frolic through the regency period- perfect for fans of Bridgerton and those who enjoy historical romance with some saucy content. A great debut novel for Emma Orchard!

Mein Fazit:
Ich gebe sehr gern eine Leseempfehlung!

I'd like to thank Allison & Busby, the author & NetGalley for the copy of this eARC I received in exchange for a review.

I'll be honest: despite of the events being very accelerated - a sudden marriage, secrets revealed, etc- some parts of this book had me skimming through pages (full erotica chapters, long winded inner dialogue, among others) to get to the plot. I'd say the book is half story and half smut, and actual conflict happens around 70% in. Character growth is scarce (except for Sir Benedict Silverwood, to be fair) & we don't learn tons about them - Kate is smart, beautiful and in love. Benedict is brave, kind and handsome. Lucy is like an overexcited terrier. Some characters, like the Dowager, did have an interesting story to tell but had no place to do so. The antagonist and the threat were fine but it did feel like like the conflict arose and was solved a bit too quickly.

Overall I got the feeling that I'm not the target audience for this book, so maybe it's a me problem. I did like the writing and I think it's a great debut - it has a beautiful prose, a good enough pace and the characters are believable.

I don't think I'll be reading any other books by this author but I'll definitely keep this one in mind to recommend to readers who like this genre.

Thanks to the author and Netgalley for an advance copy of the book, this is my honest review.

Aside from the Bridgerton series, I haven’t read much Regency romance but I was intrigued by the description of this book and I wasn’t disappointed. I found the romance between the two main characters believable and I also liked the extended characters as well, I think the author did a great job with making them all have distinctive personalities and their own back stories as well without distracting from the main couple too much. The writing style was quite old-fashioned, quite price and prejudice which fit in very well with the style of book but perhaps a bit harder to read than what I’m used to and which I wasn’t expecting not having read much of this genre before but definitely wouldn’t put me off reading again. All in all it was a good book, lots of romance but a bit of intrigue and secrets being teased out over the course of the book. I’ll definitely read more of this author.

This debut novel by Emma Orchard follows the story of Kate and Benedict - Kate has been in love with Benedict for years but he got married to someone else, who died and is now looking for another wife and mother for his daughter. Kate, who has been tutoring his daughter is suggested as a possible wife by his mother. Once they are married, the story unfolds at a fast pace until Benedict also realises that he has fallen in love with his new wide.

This was like reading a very naughty Georgette Heyer. In the beginning, it seemed that there would be a just a lot of dialogue and emotional scenes between the two protagonists, but was I wrong! It soon turned very erotic and hot. However, it did not take away from the emotional side of the book, as Kate struggles to hide her feelings for Benedict, but of course, it all turns out well in the end. This book is for anyone who enjoys Heyer, Julia Quinn and Lisa Kleypas. Can't wait for the next book by Emma Orchard.

The cover was so pretty! I love it! Reading the prologue my heart broken for Kate, it is so hurt when Benedict that she love awstruck by another women, not give her any second glance. Life work in weird way, seven years later Kate had opportunity to teach Benedict daughter and meet him again. Benedict looking for wife and tired of season in London, first meeting Kate he dosnt think much. When his mother give the idea married to Kate, he star to really look at Kate.

For Kate it is like dream comes true to married the man she always love but she doubt that Beneditc will ever love her. With Beneditc mother meddlig, Kate accept the proposal. The first kiss, spark start flying, steamy honeymoon, getting to know each other, Beneditc start grow feeling to Kate. The drama with Felix really annoying.

Thank you to NetGalley for provide this book, it is pleasure to review this book.

A great romp of a romance. When Benedict Silverwood meets Kate Moreton for the third time he is looking for a suitable bride in order to produce a male heir to secure the Silverwood line. With a little matchmaking from his mother and sister, he is formerly introduced to Kate and nature, or rather passion, takes over.
This book takes us on a whirlwind ride through their courtship until it reaches its happy conclusion. Whilst I enjoyed the plot, there were many moments when I wished Kate and Benedict would do something other than have sex. Reading about them eating breakfast became a wonderful relief from the endless descriptions of body parts. I'm no prude, but the sex became boring to read. However, the plot was well thought out, the characters likeable and very believable and I appreciate the work that went into writing this romp. If you enjoy a glorious Regency romp with no holds barred, then you will enjoy this.

This was a delightful Regency story in the style of Georgette Heyer (but with significantly more spice!). As I was reading the prologue, all I could think was, did someone resurrect Georgette Heyer and blackmail her ghost into writing this book? It quickly became clear, however, this this was not a closed door romance.

I just adored the two leads—they felt like thoroughly three dimensional characters, and their love story felt very true to the time. I did wonder for the first two-thirds or so what the conflict in the story would be, and the climax kind of came out of left field, but I didn’t mind it at all.

If you are used to more modern HR writers like Julia Quinn or Tessa Dare, this author’s style might take a little getting used to. But once you get used to the style, you will absolutely adore this book. Can’t wait to see what comes next from this author.

This was only my second journey into regency romance, the first been the series about an alphabetically named family. Had I have read this first I'm not sure I'd have read anymore.

It isn't a bad story, it's predictable romance with elements of Rebecca and smut thrown in. What put me off what the language of the characters. Strung out, over pompous and dreary. Sure, that may have been the way thee spoke then, but it's tedious to read.

The characters themselves were OK. I enjoyed the brother in law and his speech pattern. As well as the less than matronly mother in law. The main characters were less enjoyable.

Overall it's a sex filled romp of quick romance and even quicker side stories. Grab this book for a weekend read with a few glasses of wine.

Thanks to Netgalley for the chance to read and review.

I received a copy via Net Galley.

Benedict Silverwood needs to find a new wife and wants to find someone who will love his daughter although he can’t imagine anyone replacing his wife. Kate has been in love with Benedict for years and is surprised when his mother suggests that they get married.

Overall I thought that this was a good read and I am definitely interested in reading more from this author in the future. I really liked the first half of this book as we see Benedict and Kate get to know one another. The spicy scenes in this were really good. I liked the characters and their relationship. One thing that I would have liked to see more of is the couple interacting as a family with Benedict’s daughter as he made such a big thing about finding a wife that would be a good mother. I love seeing families interact particularly with young children so this is just a personal preference.

Overall I enjoyed this and would like to read more from this author in the future. If you love historical romance this is certainly one to check out.

A very steamy story. A young lady debutante falls for a dashing officer on leave because he is wounded. They dance a few times and he then spots one of the season’s diamonds, falls for her and marries, leaving the young lady heartbroken. They meet a few years later when she is a spinster and he a widower with a very young daughter the spark is still there for her, but does not remember her.
I enjoyed how they came together again and the issues when they married and the twists and turns. However, whilst I do not object to some spice and heat in a story I felt it was just a little too much during the honeymoon. For me it felt as if those scenes did not add and indeed seemed at times a bit gratuitous. As such I felt that detracted a bit for me. So is this a 3 or 4 star? I think having considered it is a 3 star mainly due to the amount of spice which I do not think it needed.

Kate and Benedict meet and dance during her first season. She falls in love with him, but he almost immediately falls for and marries another beautiful woman. Years later, they meet again when he hires Kate to tutor his young daughter in Italian. He's a widower now and doesn't remember Kate, but she is still hopelessly in love with him. With a push from his mother, Benedict ends up wooing Kate, but there's a conflict they need to deal with that takes up the last part of the story.
Like other reviewers, I thought there was too much sex in the book and insufficient story. Benedict is a bit of a jerk but overall a good guy, while Kate is intelligent and perfect for him. The daughter is fine, but I mostly liked Benedict's mother, who had some character and more of a backstory that I wanted to learn more about. Still, a good first novel.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for letting me have an ARC

I read this book in one sitting! Absolutely loved it. I was so excited to tell someone about it, i was updating my boyfriend at every major thing that happened within the Silverwood Family - imagine falling in love in the 1800’s while at a debutante ball and the guy you’ve fallen in love with had his eyes set on the girl behind you and you fade in to the darkness. Fast forward 7 years and you are teaching his 6 year old daughter Italian. He’s now a widower and looking for another wife but he’s hiding secrets that you find out eventually. Definitely recommend for anyone who is into like Bridgerton vibes with a lot of spice included.

The second lady Silverwood for me was a slow burner at first because I felt like what I wanted to see was not happening however that could be a good thing because it kept me reading till the very end. The characters have such depth to them that I want to know more, we only got to have a glimpse of Ben's character and why he was like that due to the passing of his 1st wife however I wanted to read more about him and his life pre-meeting Vanessa or kate and find out why he picked Vanessa.

Anyway and anyhow, please read this book if you are looking for a cute and charming book or how to discover how lust can turn into love. This book is spicyish and romantic at the same time

A new author, I think a debut. I enjoyed this book. The first 60% of the book was the build up of the actual relationship, lots of passion. It gave me a bit of a reverse Rebecca vibe. Kate is the second wife wondering a bit about Vanessa and remembering how dazzled Ben was when he first saw her. Ben is really pleased as to how sexually compatible he is with Kate. I agree the baddie was a bit obvious and has been done before but I still thought the book worked.

I'll look out for more from this author.

A fabulous debut regency romance novel with two loveable main characters - the dashingly handsome Lord Benedict Silverwood and the shy, demure Kate Morton.
Kate has secretly has a crush on Benedict for several years.
When circumstances change, Kate becomes the second Lady Silverwood by mutual agreement.
Then the racy romp filled chapters begin!!
Both are learning to love and what they want from a relationship.
Kate becomes a strong assertive character who knows what she wants from a husband and life.
Benedict develops and grows realising that he has true romantic genuine feelings for Kate.
It’s beautifully written and engages you from the very beginning - pure escapism
Has a Bridgerton/Cinderella feel about it.

If you want a top quality, well written, properly in-the-period regency romance, you should read this. I found myself really liking and rooting for the main characters, and there’s enough mystery about the hero’s past to keep you wondering about him. Other characters well drawn too - particularly Benedict’s family. His brother in law was particularly adorable and Heyer-esque. I think the characterisation was one of my favourite things in this book - everyone has their own understandable motivations, even those we might see as the negative characters. A gem of a book, and I’ll very much look forward to reading more from this author.

Initially a bit of a slow-burning romance that turns sizzling hot. Kate has loved Benedict for years, after one magical dance with him. She saw him turn away from her, mesmerised by another young woman. Now fate has presented her with another opportunity. Can she risk her heart again and if he doesn’t reciprocate her feelings, will the status of being married to him be enough? She learns that he is a passionate and inventive lover, and she matches him, but will she win his heart? A naughtily steamy romance. I enjoyed it. Thanks to Net Galley for my copy.
