With a bit more depth than the first book (Ashton-Kirk, Investigator) this mystery/detective novel gets four stars as opposed to the other's three. What it still lacks is the development of Ashton-Kirk as a character that isn't infallible, untouchable and ultimately right about everything. There was a hint of that in this novel, but only a hint. But perhaps that is the point: you know everything is going to be well, there won't be any moral dilemmas, and so you're all set to enjoy a stress-free journey.
Librivox narration is extremely enjoyable, reader uses voice inflection and accents enhancing the readers experience. Librivox (audio) and Gutenberg (text) both free. Recommended for Golden Age mystery lovers.
It's hard to rate a book that is more than a century old. I don't think most modern readers would enjoy Ashton-Kirk, partly because of the racism and classism that were a natural (and probably unoticed) part of the background during the author's lifetime, and partly because of the antiquated narrative style. Still, I do think this is an interesting example of early detective fiction.
