This book follows the apprenticeship model begun in Arkansas elementary schools. By integrating reading, writing and spelling the goal is to develop self-regulated learners. I liked the integration of spelling and the modeling of how to do it in the classroom. I will continue to refer back to this book as a reference guide. I own the book.

I was surprised by how "common core" this book seemed given it's almost 15 years old! I am most excited to implement the ideas about spelling instruction, with the understanding that, when approached correctly, this can activate high levels of thinking and is critical for the development self-regulated learners, which, I feel, is the definition of literate in today's world!
